Edomae sushi at a reasonable price. Popular sushi joint. Clean minimalist decor. 6pm reservation. My wife really enjoys coming here. I feel that they can better improve on their rice preparation as it’s a bit gummy and mashed. It ought to be distinct, plump and glossy. The 90 minutes time limit is a bit tight but we happily oblige because we want to see this kind and hospitable husband and wife team succeed and serve more waiting customers.

A Japanese restaurant that sells very fresh ingredients with a taste slightly resembling the south side of Japan. They will be short staffed – there were only 2 employees! Reservations are much recommended, this place seats little people. For the price, I would say that this is very worth it. Not so expensive while still retaining good quality.

We also ordered an Ankimo but that order never got through.

Tiny little restaurant run by 1 chef and I’m guessing wife running the front. Sushi was very fresh and authentic. Cozy little restaurant. They don’t have a full kitchen (no deep fryer) so wasn’t able to cook the bone of the Aji we ordered like other restaurants but they do have a handful of cooked items like oden. They have a very different version of Saba sushi which some may find very fishy the way they prepare it but it’s very unique. Loved the chutoro.

100000% recommend this place to any sashimi lover! Fresh, affordable, cute small gem in Richmond.
Rather than spending your money at a high end place, come here!!! You get great quality seafood. I felt full and happy .
It’s a small place so if you need to book in advance I would do so!

Small but lovely restaurant. I ordered the 11-piece assorted nigiri and I love the chef’s fish selection. The fish was fresh, and each piece was cut thick. I wasn’t full, so I got an extra negi toro.
They were actually fully booked the night I went, but since I was alone, I was lucky enough to get a seat at the counter. I’d recommend calling to reserve in advance, especially on weekends. The service was a bit slow since there were only two staff (the chef and one waiter) but they are attentive.

Chef’s Choice Sashimi
The Chef’s Choice Sashimi offers a masterful selection of some of the freshest cuts available. Presented beautifully, the plate featured Katsuo (bonito), Hirame (flounder), Hamachi (yellowtail), Kanpachi (greater amberjack), and Sockeye Salmon. Each slice showcased an impeccable sheen, signifying peak freshness, and was expertly sliced to highlight its natural flavors and textures. The fish was tender, with a clean, delicate taste that paired perfectly with a hint of soy sauce. This dish exemplified the quality and precision Sushi Hachi is known for.

Beef Sashimi

Sushi Hachi’s beef sashimi is a standout, even when compared to other top-tier Japanese restaurants. The thin slices of beef were rich in flavor and boasted a perfect marbling that melted effortlessly on the palate. Each bite was an umami-rich experience, enhanced by a subtle hint of seasoning. This dish truly demonstrated the chef’s ability to deliver flavors that are both nuanced and satisfying.

Ikura Don

The Ikura Don features a bed of sushi rice topped with glistening, orange salmon roe. The pearls of ikura were fresh, bursting with a salty, briny flavor that complemented the mildly seasoned rice. While simple in concept, the quality of the ingredients made this dish a delightful and comforting option.

Sushi Hachi Chirashi
Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors and textures, and the freshness of the fish was undeniable. This dish truly represents the essence of Japanese cuisine.

Bluefin Tuna Belly (Chu Toro)

The Bluefin Tuna Belly, or Chu Toro, is a highlight that shouldn’t be missed. Its intense marbling and melt-in-your-mouth texture make every bite a luxurious experience. The rich, buttery flavor lingers on the palate, and the freshness of the tuna shines through. This dish is a testament to the high standards maintained by Sushi Hachi in sourcing top-quality ingredients.

Chopped Scallop

While the chopped scallop was fresh and enjoyable, it didn’t quite stand out among the other offerings. The flavor was pleasant but lacked the complexity that distinguished the other dishes. Nevertheless, it was a solid, if not exceptional, addition to the meal.

Unagi Battera

The Unagi Battera was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the meal. The unagi, perfectly torched, offered a rich, caramelized flavor that paired beautifully with the slightly vinegared rice. This dish struck an ideal balance between flavor and texture, showcasing the chef’s craftsmanship.

Ambiance

Sushi Hachi offers an authentic Japanese dining experience, with an ambiance that feels both cozy and intimate. The decor is reminiscent of small sushi establishments in Japan, and the vibe is relaxed yet refined, making it an ideal setting for a leisurely meal.

Service

The service, however, left much to be desired. Despite the restaurant being relatively quiet, it felt like the staff wasn’t attentive. This detracted from what could have been a seamless dining experience, and it’s an area that needs improvement to match the high quality of the food.

Price

Given the quality and freshness of the ingredients, the prices at Sushi Hachi are quite reasonable. The generous portions and expertly prepared dishes provide excellent value for those who appreciate authentic Japanese cuisine.

Verdict
Sushi Hachi stands out as a destination for anyone seeking an authentic Japanese dining experience. The quality of the fish is exceptional, and the dishes are prepared with a level of care and expertise that is truly commendable. Despite the service being a weak point, the ambiance and food more than make up for it. For those who value quality and freshness, Sushi Hachi is definitely worth a visit.

Advice: Make a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment, especially if you want to secure a seat at this authentic gem.

Outstanding sushi! The taste and freshness of the fish is comparable to literally being at the fish market in Japan! Every piece was splendid making this restaurant easily one of the best authentic sushi restaurants in Richmond. Even their miso soup was elevated with real fish meat and enhanced rich broth! So glad to have dined here and totally would come back, only you must make a reservation early because they are always fully booked due to popularity!

Excellent quality sushi and sashimi. The quality that you’d actually expect when you dine-in in Japan. There’s only one server and could be little challenging to get her attention but she was very smooth and efficient. Make sure to make a reservation in advance as they have limited seating. My favourite sushi place in BC!

Always go for the sushi set, it’s the best way to enjoy a variety, from rich tuna to buttery hamachi to delicate shima aji. The cold freshness of the fish meets the gentle warmth of the rice, and every piece is spot-on. The miso soup is also a standout, layered with deep fish umami and savory miso. Highly recommend! Please don’t expect hotel service here considering it’s a family owned business with a couple working, some items might take time but it’s worth the wait.

Great selection and quality, reminiscent of Tokyo. Price is decent for what you get I find this place a better value than the top Japanese fine dining in downtown. Service was ok. Could be a little more engaging. Overall splendid dinner. Make sure to reserve ahead of time.
