FOOD: We had read something about good cocktails, but it took a lot of digging (beyond the menus provided) to find anything about it. Wine list was a lot shorter than I sort of expected from a place called a “wine bar.” The malbec I ordered a glass of was fine; my wife’s rose champagne was very nice and dry.
We tried a couple of apps to see if we wanted to order dinner. The polenta fries were dry. The Korean pork tidbits were tasty but just little chunks of pork in a bowl. Nothing drastically wrong with either, but not anything particularly inspiring, either. We decided to have dinner elsewhere.
SERVICE: Friendly, but felt pushed to order something *right now*. The receipt came with QR code for payment through Toast. It wasn’t clear if I should pay through that, or wait for her to take my card. (I used the QR code, and the waitperson then wandered over (to get my card, it seemed) and seemed surprised and very relieved I’d used the QR code, which saved them so much work.
AMBIANCE: Nicely decorated place. They apparently do a number of events, and when we were there, a big party was going on in the front half of the dining room, which was fairly noisy (and the crowd of which spread across the entrance).
NET-NET: Not a great experience — not bad, strictly speaking, but there’s a lot of other places I could have gone. I’d eat there again if a friend recommended meeting there, but given the many choices in downtown Englewood, I wouldn’t pick it again on my own.
The food was absolutely amazing every dish was beautifully presented, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. You could truly taste the quality and care in every bite. The wine pairings elevated the experience even more, making the evening feel luxurious yet comfortable at the same time.
The service was immaculate and impeccable. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, and genuinely kind. What made the night even more special was the owner, Jaime. She was beyond accommodating, down to earth, and personally ensured that every guest felt welcomed and valued. Her presence added such a personal and memorable touch to the entire experience.
If you’re in Denver and looking for exceptional food, outstanding service, and an atmosphere that feels both elegant and inviting, One Barrel American Bistro & Wine Bar is truly a gem. I couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We will absolutely be back.
The brief conversation with some of the staff was pleasant, and the wine advice I overheard given to other patrons was knowledgeable and led to good wine selection.
I look forward to going back to try a flight and more of the menu.
We tried the charcuterie and bread plates, both were absolutely amazing. Then we had Bone In Ribeye for 2 (it really should say for 3-4), and Chicken Schnitzel.
Unfortunately there was no room for dessert this time.
We went for the bone-in ribeye for two special, and unfortunately the timing really overshadowed everything. We ordered a wine flight and didn’t receive it for about 30 minutes. Our server checked in and assured us it was coming “right now”, twice, but we ended up waiting each time after that. We were sitting there on our second round of bread (which isn’t listed on the menu but also comes with the steak, so we accidentally ordered and paid for a second one). The bread was honestly the best part of the experience.
When the food arrived, it came with asparagus and not the listed-on-the-menu green beans. When asked about it the server was unaware of what was supposed to be coming with the meal. The asparagus was over seasoned and over cooked. The Brussels sprouts (which were supposed to be included) were undercooked and under seasoned. They apologized and brought out green beans, but those were scorched, overcooked, and sautéed with burnt garlic.
We ordered the ribeye medium, and the eye came out rare while the cap came out medium well, and it was over an hour from when we placed the order. The whiskey peppercorn just was pretty good. The mashed potatoes were gummy and overmixed, and heavily seasoned. At that point, the experience just felt off for what was supposed to be a special Valentine’s dinner. We actually ended up going somewhere else afterward because we were still hungry.
I do want to say the waitstaff seemed kind and genuinely apologetic, this didn’t feel like a server issue, more like a kitchen or management breakdown on a busy night.
Also super awkward as some couples were given roses with there bill and others weren’t. And not just because we said something about the food, I saw other couples as well. Not a huge deal, but on Valentine’s Day it felt noticeable.
Overall, I’ve had good drinks here before, so I know it can be good. But I wouldn’t personally choose it again for a holiday or special occasion.
The meat was cooked well, but arrived lukewarm (even a little cold along the edge). The tabletop was sticky. The service was… Kind of apathetic, honestly.
I found this place to be grossly overpriced for what I received overall. I would probably not recommend it unless you’re just desperate for a quick bite and already in the area. It’s not bad… Just not good.
Highly recommend a glass of the Weather Chardonnay with the One Barrel Chop Salad. Great lunchtime pairing!
