Our meal at Matu in Beverly Hills was outstanding and truly memorable. We eat halal, and it was great to discover that Matu serves exclusively halal, grass-fed First Light Farms Wagyu beef from New Zealand. We ordered the ribeye, New York strip, fries, Japanese Caesar, and skewers. Every steak was cooked perfectly – juicy, tender, and richly flavorful. The fries were crispy and well-seasoned, the Japanese Caesar was fresh and delicious, and the skewers were my wife’s favorite and added an extra savory touch.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it ideal for a relaxing night out. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the manager went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for us. Their genuine hospitality made our visit even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a halal-friendly steakhouse with excellent food and great service, Matu is a fantastic choice in Beverly Hills.

Matu benefits greatly from its address. Strip away the prestige of the location, and it is difficult to imagine the restaurant generating the same level of demand. For a place that can easily reach $300 per person, the gap between ambition and execution becomes noticeable almost immediately.

Flaws That Are Difficult to Overlook
• Weak conceptual identity: The grass-fed Wagyu narrative feels diluted. Guests appear to come because the restaurant is well located and reliable—not because the concept is powerful or memorable.
• Lack of fine-dining discipline: Cutlery wrapped in napkins, visible stacks of kitchen towels near the cashier, and staff folding cloths during service signal operational looseness. These are details that should be resolved before guests walk in.
• Staff presence lacks warmth: The team is attentive and professional, yet not particularly candid or engaging. Most of the staff appears overly serious, and the overall energy feels restrained. Explanations are minimal, with some dishes arriving at the table with little context—missing an opportunity to elevate the experience.
• No bread offering: Unusual for a steakhouse and especially surprising within a tasting-style format. It subtly reduces the perception of generosity.
• Coffee program falls short: No espresso available—only French press—and even that took considerable time due to an error. It was not offered as a courtesy afterward, which would have been an appropriate recovery gesture.
• Steak knives feel inexpensive: While not serrated (a positive), they lack the weight and craftsmanship expected in a restaurant centered around premium beef.
• Noise level is high: The room leans more energetic than refined, making conversation challenging at times.
• Valet is inefficient: $15 is reasonable for Beverly Hills, but the wait to retrieve the car feels disproportionately long.
• Fries are mediocre: Easily forgettable—particularly disappointing in a restaurant that should obsess over every detail on the plate.
• Bone broth is good, but not memorable: Flavorful yet far from mind-blowing. Given the small portion, it almost feels like it should be complimentary rather than included in the paid menu.

What Works
• Tenderloin: Delicious, very flavorful, and properly cooked—one of the highlights of the meal. However the lettuce with so much garlic destroyed the experience.
• Wagyu tartare: Very well executed, brightened by yuzu and lifted by the gentle heat of sansho pepper. Adding more toast would improve balance and usability for the portion size.
• Desserts:
• Panna cotta was well made—clean, pleasant, and enjoyable.
• The chocolate cake, however, missed the mark, with an unusual texture and a flavor that did not feel refined.

Overall, Matu delivers competent food and a visually appealing environment, but the experience does not consistently align with the expectations set by its price point. It is a good restaurant—but not yet operating at the level of a truly great steakhouse.

The flavors!! LOVE the tasting option so much. We will definitely have to come back and try more of their dishes. We made reservations online and didn’t have to wait at all when we arrived.

We ordered the Matu dinner for two with an extra side of garlic bread. The bread came out with the tartar and it was all so delicious. The filet was my favorite.

From the bone broth to the final course … the timing of everything was spaced out perfectly as well.

The vibe is chic and the service was attentive. Highly recommend making the drive if you’re not nearby.

Wow… just wow. I have to give this restaurant a 5/5 on every aspect. To put it plainly, I have never tasted a better steak in my life. I went here for my girlfriends birthday having been told by a good friend of mine that the meat at Matu was the best meat they had ever tried, I found it hard to believe him at first since he’s travelled all over the world trying the best foods that each country can offer, but having tried it now myself, I fully believe him. I ended up ordering the “Matu dinner for 2” with the ribeye… the bone broth was phenomenal, the tartare was seasoned and prepared to absolute perfection, the braised cheek was so tender that it melted underneath the pressure of my fork, the fillet was simply delicious, and the ribeye with the slightly spicy brocollini was hands down the best meat I’ve ever tried in my life. I wish I could eat here every single day of my life. There are no complaints for me to say here. The only “heads up” that I’d MAYBE give a couple that is planning on coming here, is that it is a little bit loud, so it might not be the most “private/romantic” setting ever (but even then, I might not let them know so that they can have the opportunity to try this incredible steak)
Come here if you haven’t already.

Nice place, good vibes and excellent service. Love the mixed drinks. We ordered ala carte menu. The prix fix menu had very small portion of the beef. For meat lovers, I recommend this restaurant. Must try when in Beverly Hills. They have valet or park across the street, 2 hrs free before 6pm or $5 flat after 6pm. Open sitting at the bar. You can only order the Philly cheesesteak sandwich at the bar or you can the prix fix for 4 at the table. Reservation is recommended. Loved this place!!!

I’m from New Jersey, where cheesesteaks are already top-tier, so my expectations were high but the Wagyu cheesesteak from Matū absolutely blew me away. I had it delivered, and it still showed up hot, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The bread was soft but held together beautifully, the onions were caramelized just right, and the Wagyu beef was unbelievably tender and flavorful. You can really taste the quality in every bite. The cheese and roasted pepper added the perfect finishing touch. Even compared to the great East Coast spots I’ve had, this one stands out. This cheesesteak didn’t make me feel heavy after eating it.

Matu in Beverly Hills is all about steak! They serve Australian Wagyu, and they cook it to a red center. (They’ll do a little more cooking than that, but not much. And you won’t want to cook it more than that. You need to trust that they know steak!) The restaurant seats about 80 people, so it’s medium sized, and the bar only seats 10-12. It’s very dark and loud when it’s busy, but the food is first rate. I don’t think I’d recommend this place if you don’t eat meat, even though you can figure out a meal from the menu. Really delicious meal. My wife said she liked this steak more than The Royce in Pasadena. Valet out front, but you might find parking along Beverly Blvd.

No words can do justice to this amazing place. Everything was superb from the starters to the main dish and ending the amazing meal with the chocolate cake that made me tear up. Worth every penny spent there

Had high hopes for Matu especially after hearing they were going to expand into the SGV. We just missed the first seating so the hostess said maybe 30-45 minutes for a seat at the bar. As my buddy and I had plans at 2, we decided to just place a take out order on Postmates. To our surprise, the estimate on Postmates was about the same! We opted to keep the take out order and headed next door for coffee as we waited for the food. My order actually took close to an hour before it was ready.

The seeded roll was good and the beef was pretty flavorful. What was disappointing was that there wasn’t much cheese at all in the sandwich. Not quite sure why some Yelpers stated they had a lot of cheese but we didn’t notice or taste much of it (I ordered 5 sandwiches). The hot pepper was super spicy so be sure you can handle the heat before adding. I also ordered the wagyu potato chips which were really bland. I honestly enjoyed the day old cheesesteak more as I toasted the sandwich in our Balmuda which added a nice crispy texture.

Although the sandwich was decent, not sure it justifies the price point especially with the added 18% health charge adder. I think I’ll fulfill my cravings with a sandwich from Woodrow’s in Philly.
