Shrimp wonton soup was 1st class…. BBQ pork buns were fantastic!!!!! House shrimp dumplings were yummy and so good… portions are good and if you in the area, give it a try.. they have Dim Sum menu as well…. Was tying to talk with owner but she was very busy with other customers… I wanted to tell her about my experience…
This restaurant was Silver Pond for decades, a legit Cantonese spot that I used to drive 30–45 minutes from Boca/Palm Beach to eat at. When it changed ownership and became Kirin about a year ago, the menu fell apart. Many of the classic dishes disappeared, the ones that stayed were unrecognizable, and quality and service fell off the cliff.
At some point this year, Kirin was taken over again by another local Chinese restaurant. They kept the name, but the food is completely different now, and honestly better than the old Silver Pond in a lot of cases. Some of the original Silver Pond waiters are even back. The place has been cleaned up and the fish tanks are finally clean again!
We had the following dishes:
• Fried pork intestine – Used to be a small, often quite funky appetizer at Silver Pond. Now it’s a full entrée with bigger, meatier pieces, super crispy, lightly stir-fried with onions, green pepper, and scallion instead of being drenched in sweet sauce. I actually prefer this version.
• Chicken wings – Only ordered because someone in our group was less adventurous. Huge mistake (in a good way). Perfectly crispy, insanely juicy, some of the best wings I’ve had anywhere.
• Roasted duck (half) – Crispy skin, juicy meat, tasted exactly how I remember it from the old Silver Pond days.
• Hong Kong pork chops – The standout. Thicker, crispier, juicier, fewer bones, and better sauced than the original. Worth the trip just for these.
• Whole Dungeness crab with garlic – As good as I’ve had in any big Chinese food city. No grease, just clean garlic and sweet crab.
• Garlic eggplant hotpot – Same silky texture as before but with a little more heat. Served bubbling in cast iron. Outstanding.
• Sichuan beef & vegetable stir fry – The opposite of greasy takeout. Minimal oil, vegetables still have bite, and the beef was perfectly velveted.
If you skipped Kirin because of the first owners, or if you just miss Silver Pond, I’d urge you to give them another shot.
Much of the good food that I remember is back, and in some cases, better than it ever was.
Please give them a try and say Gary sent you
A true hidden gem for authentic Cantonese cuisine! The brunch dim sum was incredibly authentic, with each piece perfectly crafted!
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming.
Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates authentic Cantonese dim sum and traditional flavors!
Kirin Restaurant has breathed new life into what was once Silver Pond—same great location, but now with fresh management, a new look, and a rejuvenated vibe. The updated interior is clean and inviting, with a modern touch that still honors the charm of its past.
The menu has remained largely the same, which is a huge win for longtime fans. I tried the Singapore Rice Noodles, and they were absolutely off the charts—perfectly spiced, loaded with flavor, and cooked to perfection. You can tell the new team here is focused on maintaining the classics while elevating the overall experience.
If you loved Silver Pond or are simply looking for authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine in the area, Kirin is a must-visit. I took a few pics while I was there—check them out, and be sure to follow for more food finds across South Florida!
