Matador was an interesting place, and a bit different than your average Mexican place! It was dimly lit, so it might be best for a low-key, or perhaps a romantic night out. It’s not my favorite type of Mexican restaurant, as it’s a little more upscale than I *personally* prefer, but if upscale Mexican is your vibe, then this’ll be the perfect restaurant for you! They had an alright selection of beers, to include a couple of IPAs, but my friends and I didn’t really enjoy their cocktails. They were expensive, but lacking in much flavor or zest. Besides looking cool, the taste didn’t really match the aesthetic. Furthermore, the food was solid, but not that much better than your basic Mexican restaurant. As for the service, our waiter was nice enough, but he always seemed to be in a hurry, and was walking away while we were still trying to give our order.

All-in-all, I’m probably making Matador sound worse than it was, but it was merely a slightly above-average Mexican experience, not a transcendental dining experience that I’ll never forget. I’ll give it 3/5 stars, and would recommend it based on your personal preference.

Shrimp and chicken fajitas were excellent., it had just enough spice. The mahi tacos were plentiful. Black beans very tasty. The salsa was the best i ever had. Had a blood orange margaritas that was nice and cold. Highly recommend the matador

Great food! We came for lunch and ordered the combo meal. It was a good price and generous portion! Everything tasted amazing! The salsa is a cooked salsa where the peppers and tomatoes are roasted giving great flavors! Nice cozy atmosphere with friendly staff.

Extensive tequila selection with a full bar to back it. Their specialty margaritas are sublime; I highly recommend the blood orange and the tamarind-ginger. Happy hour (daily) has discounted tacos and nachos and the nachos are certainly grande. Service was friendly and helpful.

Stopped in for happy hour at Matador and was impressed by the variety of options—both food and cocktails are included on the happy hour menu, which is a huge plus. We ordered tacos and margaritas, and both were flavorful and well-portioned. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity.

We were seated right away with no wait, which was a nice surprise. The space has a fun, upbeat atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind.

One note: we stayed for a bit after eating, and while the staff was attentive and courteous, we did feel slightly rushed at times—even though we asked and confirmed the table wasn’t needed. It wasn’t rude, just something to be aware of if you’re planning to linger.

Overall, it’s a solid spot for happy hour in Charleston—great menu, strong drinks, and fast seating. Would definitely come back!

Planned on going to Hyman’s tonight but passed by here and was drawn in by the cozy and warm atmosphere. It had been a while since I’ve had decent Mexican food, and the Habanero Steak burrito was perfect for satisfying my craving. My Ginger Orange Margarita was exactly as advertised, worth the price, and only complemented by the great bar staff. If I lived here, I’d be here all the time

Our server was nice at first but EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful when we were charged wrong for our meal. I had explicitly stated me and my friend were SHARING a quesadilla meal and that the tortillas needed to be gluten free. Our server said she could make us the size of the regular one with the small ones. Next thing u know she brings out 3 different quesadilla meals and said “this is what our cook decided to do” meaning that she was not expecting it either. Then she charged us for 3 different meals. We only ate one. I told her the issue very friendly and nice and she was extremely rude and hostile back. Said that they were busy and they didn’t have to accommodate me. When I wasn’t even the issue it was just miscommunication between me, the server, and the cook. She ended up getting the two quesadillas off and said a snarky remark about explaining better next time. Little did she know if she was friendly I would’ve given her a huge tip for understanding what went wrong. Instead she got a $0 tip. I work in customer service and have to accommodate to customers even when they’re NOT in the right on a daily basis. I make the moment right always. I never have an attitude or am unfriendly. I get it customers can be annoying but I was very nice up until she caught an attitude. I used to recommend this place too! I don’t typically leave reviews but I have never experienced something like that. (Like why would two ppl sharing a meal want 3 separate plates of quesadillas it’s just common sense) ughh

Fun & delish noms, great spot. We’ve been seated at the bar twice with yum bites, good drinks & great service. The grilled jalapeño & goat cheese apps. are so great and the reverse HH is perfection, highly recommend!

This Mexican restaurant is beautifully decorated. I went in for a meal and was not disappointed. They have fantastic food deals, and the portion sizes are generous. I tried the Mexican Street Corn and had three chicken tacos, both of which were absolutely delicious. Def a good spot to drop in for a bite to eat.
