Elvie’s – Jackson – a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant
Reviews
While there’s no shortage of great tasting food in Jackson, almost all of it leans toward the casual. Elvie’s, meanwhile, is one of the few places that embraces classic culinary style, preparation and presentation.
But here’s the kicker: all the flavor and history that comes with classic Southern cooking – fried fish, grits, cornbread, collard greens, etc. – has passed through the filter of classic, high cuisine. It’s the best of both worlds!
The atmosphere is small and intimate. Even though you have plenty of space and aren’t right on top of other diners, there’s still a communal feeling. The lighting and decor amplifies the intimacy.
The drink menu is robust and there’s something for everyone. Classic mixed drinks, wine by the glass or botte, and beers are all on offer. Sticking with the classics – a nice vino or martini – will complement anything on the menu.
The menu itself introduced new items regularly based on what’s seasonal, but there are constant staples as well.
Starting off with the oysters or chicken liver pate will start you off on your journey exquisitely. For a main, the redfish almodine is hard to beat and the steak frites are a classic. Lately they’ve had a Venison & Bone Marrow ‘pie’ that is not to be missed. Finally cruise into the citron souffle for desert.
I should also mention that breakfast is, perhaps, their true show card. And there’s literally nothing on the breakfast menu that won’t make you close your eyes and smile. The grit fritters are life-changing. The classic biscuit and gravy is also beautiful. (But, again, you could – and probably should – try everything on the breakfast menu.)
Parking is easy. There’s a lot behind the restaurant, but street parking is easy and plentiful.
The staff is attentive, but not fussy. They’re knowledgeable regarding the menu and happy to answer any questions you have.
Oh … and did I mention this place is a James Beard finalist.
Overall, if you care about the dining experience and are in Jackson then you have to come to Elvie’s.
The service here is always friendly and fast, the atmosphere is comfy, and the food often doesn’t disappoint.
A Belhaven staple for sure!
P.S. I love to order apps like caviar service to take home and have an at-home, just for me, dinner party.
Certainly worth a stop if you are visiting Jackson or a Jackson native.
They were also doing some street painting while I was there so it will be nice to see what that once its done!
