Local here and have heard every review about this place so let me put it to rest.

Having been here 4 times, twice before the grand opening a couple weeks ago and twice since the “official opening.”

Pre-Official Opening: service was horrible and food was amazing and no alcohol license.

Post-Official Opening: service has caught up to the food and they serve alcohol.

Look, we are in Ohio, folks – we aren’t in the midst of southern BBQ country but this does give a good jab at southern style cooking; homestyle kind of food.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND the bourbon chicken, mac n cheese (1 time it wasn’t fresh so we asked for a new one and they happily obliged).

DO NOT RECOMMEND: the brisket. I have NEVER seen a pulled brisket but it is simply not good. Usually a staple for BBQ joints but they just missed the mark.

The greens side dish is fantastic.

It did seem like every side item had meat, of some kind, in it. The baked beans seemed to have pebbled beef (maybe?) in it with bacon chunks, the greens had meat in them, also.

It is a great start but they are still young – give them time to mature because the smokey flavor is good. Again, that bourbon chicken is where it’s at!

They serve breakfast all day. They do have pies and desserts not listed and, I hear, the ribs are good.

They have specials like $2 hamburgers on Thursdays; view my photos of the menu for more on their deals.

I will keep going back and checking on progress; can’t beat having a local BBQ joint.

Overall a 3.5 but giving a 4 because I see hope and I see them making changes every, single week to increase quality.

The owners are learning and listening to their customers – it is obvious to see.

No atmosphere! Could hear music from kitchen but other than that no sound!
Beer is cold. Food is ok nothing special. Had bourbon chicken over rice & kind of dry.
Staff is not engaging. Only about 5 people in the place you think they would engage their customers. No personality. Bathrooms are not very clean (men’s & women’s).
We won’t be back.

Our first experience with Al’s smokehouse and it was “okay” had some cute little signs on the walls and little picnic tables on the tables that holds their condiments (adorable) our server Elavon was on point with our drinks. Kept us up to date with our food, told us the “Specials” she was awesome.
Now to the food. No onions or pickles for the Brisket. No side of BBQ sauce as I would expect them to be on the table being a bbq restaurant. My kids ordered their cheesesteak and they asked for mayo (they were out) it came to the table No Fries as the menu said and we asked. We were told they were out of that as well, after we asked she offered us another side. That should of been during the food cooking process so we didn’t have to wait for the sides to come out.
This was probably our first and last visit. Very disappointed but the server was good. They have some things to work out still.

So we decided to check this place out today around 2pm as we were curious to see who had moved into the old TGI Friday’s. This part of town could always use new eateries. Rumor has it the landlord jacked the price up so TGIF Inc told em to take a flying leap and vacated the premises.

And along comes M’s Smokehouse. Oh, I’m sorry. That’s Al’s Smokehouse. Font choice and kerning were thrown out the window by whoever decided that was a good idea to get a brand out there. So Al’s has moved in. When TGI left I’m assuming the place was stripped bare because it is now housing tables from what I can only imagine are out of an old Long John Silver from the 1980s. Even the restrooms were gutted and now refurnished in a hodge lodge of discount styles.

These were the first impressions.

Now onto the main attractions. Service and food.

We were seated. Then asked to get up so they could clean the already wet table. It wasn’t busy. Only about 5 tables seated total. Parking lot was very sparse. Made me wonder how the staff got there. Oh well, I love me some barbecue and was willing to look past the presentational short comings. Asked for an unsweet tea and was served a sweat tea. No big deal, the waitress took it back and brought me back another sweet tea. So far not winning me over in any way shape or form. I ordered the ribs because the quality of a barbecue places ribs is the best indicator if they really run any sort of quality control over the rest of their dishes. Wife ordered the asian chicken but they were out of that so she got the bourbon chicken.

Food took about 10 minutes to come out, that’s pretty solid. But the quality of the experience continued to go down hill. The first couple of ribs I went for were barely above room temperature. My wife’s dish could have also been warmer. These were not fall of the bone ribs. They also didn’t taste like mommas secret homemade recipe. I’m assuming St Louis style because they were sweet, but maybe it was just discount grocery store brand generic barbecue sauce because even it wasn’t enough to mask these dry and gristled hunks of jerky. I powered threw about 3 of them and went for my side of green beans that looked like they hadn’t been stirred our hydrated since maybe the night before. And as you can see in the picture I provided when I bit into that chicken bone that was hidden in the green beans I was pretty much done at that point. Wife was grossed out and all we wanted to do is pay our check and be on with our day.

I really wanted to like this place. I went in with an open mind despite the smack in the mouth you get from walking through the door of a construction site / slash restaurant. I understand, it’s tough all over, but if you’re going to open a restaurant in such a visible state of disarray at least put 110% into the food quality. I’m not sure who the target audience is for this place but it certainly wasn’t me.

My wife and I have now eaten at Al’s twice; once dine-in and the other carry-out. The service was a little slow, but the staff made up for it with how courteous and nice they were. Very attentive. The restaurant was busy the evening we ate there. So no issues from us. We go out to eat to spend time with each other as we’re going to eat anyway. Those that get irritated with the experience should understand…YOU are also part of that experience…so lighten up.

As for the food, everything we had was awesome. Full rack of ribs, jerk chicken, bourbon chicken and pulled pork. All very tasty. Didn’t like the coleslaw, but that is not their fault as I’m very particular about my slaw (raised in the south).

Over all, great food, staff was friendly and helpful, atmosphere needs a little help, but they’re only a month out the door. We will be going back again and i have recommended this to friends and family.

Food was great. Service was horrible. No greeting when you enter, assumed we had to seat ourselves. 10 or so minutes after sitting down still hadn’t been greeted, had to grab menus off a different table. 10 minutes after that I had to approach the bar to ask if there was a server in that section, the bartender ended up taking our order herself. Time to get food was a little long, but not extreme. Food was hot and delicious. After the meal (never checked on during) it took about 20 more minutes to have a bill brought and an opportunity to pay. All in all for a table of 4 it took over 2 hours to eat dinner. Would love to say I’ll be back to try other items on the menu, but I doubt it.

Had a group of 9 for a birthday dinner. Most of the food was good, such as the pulled pork, bourbon chicken, mac and cheese, the French fries, and the shredded brisket.

However, the service is extremely slow. It took a little over an hour for us to get our entrees. My mother didn’t even get hers, and had to prompt the waitress. It then came 8 minutes later. My girlfriends mashed potatoes were lukewarm at best. The cornbread seems as though it’s kept in a refrigerator, really cold, but good flavor.

I ordered the half rack of ribs. I probably would not order ribs from here again, given the chance. Some of it was quite tough to get around, although it did have a good smoke ring and smokey flavor. A lot of the meat wasn’t on the bone, which tells me it was sloppily cut up. Overall, not impressed with this establishment for my city of Huber Heights. May be a bit before we give it another go.
