The sushi combo was small, but very high quality. I especially enjoyed the shrimp mayo, sable fish and engawa nigiri. They had a buttery umami flavour profile that was very enjoyable. I have not seen sable fish or engawa at other restaurants, so it was a very unique offering. The combo was only supposed to have 6 pieces of sushi, but I got a bonus piece of engawa sushi for free. That was a very nice surprise. My only complaint was that the sushi was made with wasabi in it (which I didn’t really enjoy for the remaining 4 pieces of sushi; I felt that the flavour overpowered the fish). I understand that sushi is traditionally made with wasabi in Japan, though.
The ika fry was nice and crispy and paired well with the kimchi mayo. The spicy tatsuta age fried chicken was not spicy. It had a satay-like peanutty seasoning and was a bit too salty.
The sashimi bento had a bonus piece of aburi sablefish too, which was nice. Unfortunately, the portion size was really small for the sashimi bento. There were 11 slices of sashimi, a bowl of rice, and a salad. We were expecting more for a bento at a $30 price point. Typically, in other restaurants, they also serve tempura and miso soup with bentos, but not here. The restaurant was also really tiny, seating around 10-12 people at most, so reservations are highly recommended to get a spot for dine-in.
Overall, I enjoyed the sushi and unique fish offerings here at Kobachi, but the price was a bit expensive for the portion size. I would return for the sable fish and engawa, though!
It’s a more intimate space, so try to make reservations in advance.
The restaurant’s consistency in quality, service and clean & simple flavour makes this one of my favourite places to bring family and friends. And, their seasonal and feature items always get me excited to try new things.
Love their tatsuta age <3
Went with my wife and mum for a low-key belated birthday dinner for my wife, and was immediately delighted by the decore and vibe. It’s done up like a small (and I mean small, 16 seats total maybe) Japanese sushi joint you’d find in a major Japanese city, chefs are right there in the room with you.
As a trans person, it’s also really lovely to feel safe and relaxed at a restaurant from the moment you walk in, even without any pride flags or other specific indications. The staff just felt respectful and chill.
Service was excellent, I wish I’d gotten our servers, but he was absolutely lovely, honestly would have been the highlight if everything wasn’t so fantastic.
We all shared a pitcher of yuzunade, which was fantastic. I had the sushi combo and a miso soup. The soup was fabulous, and can hardly remember what specifically was in the combo, but the tuna and salmon were amazing, and it was all exceptionally good fish, and perfect rice. My wife got the Zangi Bento which I got to taste, and it was superb. Perfectly cooked chicken, delicious sauce, all around just a wonderful experience.
If I had to pick out something to comment on constructively, the music was the tiniest bit loud for me personally, but it didn’t really bother me, and didn’t make it difficult to hear the people I was with.
