It was our first time eating. We went during the Thanksgiving morning. The food was good, we enjoyed it but nothing special. The atmosphere and service, however, are what we really have to comment on.
First, when we ordered, they asked what we wanted, so I asked how the combos work or what their usual setup is since it was our first time. The lady who assisted us was nice and warm. However, the other lady assisting the person next to us wasn’t as pleasant. When the customer asked a question, she replied, ‘Kung anu lang meron d’yan, ‘yan lang meron’ (“Whatever is here, that’s all we have”) in a bossy tone. I understand that they might be already tired since they are attending to other orders since it’s Thanksgiving but she could have been nicer. She did the same thing not only to that customer but also to the next one, and even while we were eating, we could hear her using the same tone with other customers as they ordered.
After, eating I ordered some lumpia for to go. I ask for a foil to cover my take home sauce, then the cashier responded with..
Cashier: “Anung gagawin mo sa foil? Magddrugs ka nanaman?” (What are you going to do with the foil? Are you going to do drugs again?)
Me: “Hindi po.” (No, I’m not.)
Cashier: “Oh ate bigyan mo nga to ng foil magddrugs nanaman.” (Oh sis, give her some foil, she’s going to do drugs again.)
Me: “Naku, hindi po.” (Oh no, I wouldn’t do that.)
Again, this was our first time eating here, and cashier and I hadn’t had so much interactions beforehand except when we placed our order, which was positive, so I was shocked by that comment. I wasn’t able to fully process my thoughts or correct what was said because it caught me off guard.
I’m not being sensitive, but the joke was off. I know the cashier was trying to make the interaction light, but it was very inappropriate.
Kindly consider this as feedback for improving staff–customer interactions moving forward.

They have been under new management for a while now. Been going here many times with the previous owners. Gave these new owners several chances. This is the last straw.
New staff members are extremely rude. They will talk bad about you in Tagalog. Food is no longer good. Food was already spoiled when after tasting it. Meat was rancid! Threw that in the trash right away. What a waste!! Not worth spending your hard earned money when they talk bad about you and the food might give you food poisoning. Out of all the Filipino restaurants in the area that I’ve been to, this was the only one that would talk about you in their language.
They also have some food sitting out that should be under a heat lamp of refrigerated. Who knows if they serve those items that they don’t sell the next day?!?!
I would not recommend at all.

Great atmosphere and great service. Lots of option to choose from. We only order entree that we never cook at home as it could be tedious. Food was delicious, fresh and hot, not too salty or oily like some other Filipino restaurants. We come to VA Beach every year and this is our second time coming here and they never disappoint.

I have been a loyal customer to Kainan for over ten years or more. Every occasions celebrated, I’ve always ordered lumpia and pancit from them. The former owner’s employees were very polite, friendly, courteous, respectful and countless more. Never once I had problems with my orders until Friday, December 19th. I called and placed an order for 100 veggie lumpia to be picked up Saturday. Decrmber 20th between 12:15-12.30. I got there 12:20 p.m., my order was not ready. Finally @ 12:40 it’s ready, When I got to work.. a colleague informed me that the lumpia is not veggies but beef or meat. I called, Arnel answered the phone (always pleasant and polite). I explained that the order was wrong and that I specifically ordered veggie lumpia. Arnel handed the phone to the person who took the order. She argued with me over and over again and that I didn’t ordered veggie lumpia. In fact, a colleague of mine was standing next to me when the order was placed and I mentioned it twice. The person was rude and argumentative. I was offered a refund but all I wanted is a replacement to the wrong order. I couldn’t leave work Saturday so I offered to pick up the veggie lumpia Sunday, December 21st. I was so disappointed and wasn’t going to deal with it, as might as well forget it happened. I referred too many customers to the previous owners, the customer service was exceptional. There’s only two original employee left who always provide quality service. Some of the ladies (under the new ownership) are lacking personality and rude. Arnel is a great employee, always has been. Not one to give reviews but the treatment I received from the person taking the order was definitely one to write about. May I add.. when I picked up the 100 veggies lumpia, it was cold. Seemed it was cooked hours prior to my picking it up. Should be rated as 0 star. I will definitely checkout other Filipino restaurants.

I really appreciated the cool atmosphere, especially since it was so hot outside. The server was friendly and attentive. The menu offered some interesting options, though there weren’t a ton to choose from. I ordered the Lechon Kawali, Halo-halo, and Dinuguan. Overall, everything was good, but the Halo-halo was a bit disappointing…it tasted like the ingredients had been sitting out for a while, and there was no added sugar, so it lacked sweetness aside from the ube ice cream. The place was clean, and even though some of the chairs were ripped, they still appeared tidy.

This is the type of place where u can purchase here, then take home to rewarm and prepare to serve. Not to dine in. I don’t like room temperature food.

This restaurant is located in the University shoppes located to the far left of the strip mall. There is plenty of parking. The interior is spacious with seating cafe style – booths along the wall, cafe 4 top tables in the main area, and more in the adjacent room.
There are food items for purchase in the adjacent room and along the wall to the right before ordering at the counter.
I informed the staff this was my first time and they were helpful in assisting with food choices and explained the items. I opted for the white rice with 2 entree items. The lumpia were half sized and were great to get a few to try.
The food and snack item all cost under $20 which was a bargain and the tray was packed with food. Everything was flavorful and delicious! The staff were helpful and made sure I enjoyed my first visit!

What a treat! Great place! Authentic Filipino dishes. Cafeteria style serving, got 2 entrees w/ rice, some others got pancit w/ 2 entrees, got some kare kare (unfortunately not oxtails, but beef. don’t let that stop you, the beef was so tender, not sure if they pressure cooked the beef, but was very tender, highly recommend if you like karekare). Too full to get desert, went back the next day and bought some packaged ube treats and some hopia. The hopia was legit. If i lived in Virginia Beach, and was craving some Filipino food, I would head to this place hands down. I would recommend it for anyone interested in trying Filipino cuisine for the first time. Very friendly people, low key atmosphere and great food. Not to salty, pancit could have used more vegetables, carrots or cabbage, but was good. Chicken adobo was a little dry, but flavorful, will give you more sauce if you ask, great on the rice. The longanisa was so good especially w/ fresh hot white rice and suka. Craving more writing about it. Will not be disappointed. Can order catered dishes, place was happening Saturday morning, people were picking up serving dishes left and right, cars parked outside w/ hatchbacks open loading up food. Lots of people flowing in and out. That is a tell tale sign of a place w/ good food.

I thought this place was the farthest Philippine restaurant from my home, but it turned out to be the closest.
Pancit/lumpia combo and rice with two selections; this time, it’s dinuguan and lechon kawali.
Well done all around. On the lechon kawali, the crispy parts were crispy, and the tender parts were tender, unlike another restaurant where there is no love on the lechon kawali as sometimes the bottom has overcooked, carbonized pork, not edible by any means. The dinuguan was good as well. I like the dinuguan at Susan’s as well. The other dinuguan from the other place was pretty bad last time. Pancit was well seasoned, I wish it had more stuff in it besides noodles.
The steam table looks inviting when you enter, different than the other places I’ve been. The layout of the place is nice. Most condiments are easily used, but you have to ask for a lid for the to-go ramekins. No mild peppers available like at Susan’s. That’s the missing star.
Staff was nice, efficient, and helpful.
I’m going back sometime, you should, too.

The Great Aep Show
Best Filipino food in the area. We drive about 10 minutes to eat here. Wife loves the veggie pancit. I think they have the most crisp lumpia I’ve ever had. Great comfort food . Family style portions so bring the whole family, get stuffed and be happy.
