Packed and buzzing it was , the noise level I found ok – it’s a pub/ tavern, so very much expected.
For Mother’s Day, they had 3 seatings, and I did 12:30, along with many others, obviously because thats a common brunch hour. All seats inside were taken plus outside already had a buzz , check in and getting to seats for all 12:30 reservations went smoothly, patrons looking happy, nice music , etc until 30 minutes we realize no food service for anyone. Literally no food on anyone’s table until an hour after placing orders. Ours took 1 hour & 10 mins. We were of the 2 tops there, and the other tables were 4 and more. To makes matters worse, food coming out to all tables , and tables weren’t set up with silverware, this is when I confirmed there was at least 2 more staff needed on the floor, plus the floor manager, and kitchen is ridiculously slammed.
I questioned how this could be. This is a reservation system for the most part.
During my painful wait like everyone else’s – seeing everyone looking annoyed , impatient, to say the least – babies crying , this place was now deemed greedy, in my opinion. I felt safe saying this because during my wait I decided to look up reviews and as far back as 2 years ago to more recent 2 months ago, this seems to be there problem- long wait time for food. The response from the restaurant was so dumb and confirmed that the operation is a result of greed” they have a small kitchen.”
For crying out loud, don’t over book your restaurant because your kitchen size won’t change. This is a recipe for disaster and horrible service, which I see they are used to, so apologies didn’t happen, though servers seemed very calm and pleasant. They are obviously trained for this mess.
Fix it, Columbia Tavern. Yes, your food is great, excellent menu choices, very broad menu , nice ambiance, great staff too but operating like this isn’t cool. No matter how busy a restaurant gets, waiting an hour and more for food is unacceptable!!!
Would I go back? Won’t say no, but definitely not a holiday or any day that it looks busy..hmmmm
The chefs will make a huge mistake one day, when it’s super busy like this.
Don’t let greed ruin your business – it can happen.
Want all- lose all.
My one caveat is that they close when they close. Yes the hours are posted but if no one is there, they will likely call it a night early. Don’t shoot for nearly closing on an off night.
Overall, the ambience good, the tables were well spaced, the environment was clean, and our server was attentive and friendly. The portions for the price were reasonable, but we both felt that our meals were lacking a bit of flavor.
Being a gin enthusiast, I ordered the Raspberry Gin Ricky, which was made with Tanqueray. The gin/soda ratio was good. However, the raspberry purée couldn’t really be tasted. Too much would’ve been too sweet, but there wasn’t quite enough to tell it was there. I chose the Chicken Marsala entree. The chicken was cooked well, despite some dry spots in it, but I ended up requesting some crushed red pepper to enhance the bland sauce. I did find that the small amount of remaining sauce in the bottom of the dish was good. I’m not sure if this is because it then had time to sit and rest, or if I found it bland early on because it hadn’t thickened enough to “stick” to the chicken, running right off it, settling in the dish.
Jennie had ordered the Malibu Coconut, which she felt was watered down, with little hint of the Malibu. Her entree was the Columbia Chicken w/ linguini. She felt the meal, overall, was pretty good, but it could have used a bit more seasoning.
We chose to rate Columbia Tavern 3/5 because the food was a bit more on the bland side and her drink was not quite what a Malibu Coconut generally is.
Total check, incl. tax, excl. tip: $125.92
Start with the positives: the food was pretty good. Irish Benedict, “thick cut” french toast and a salad. French toast was not thick cut, but otherwise everything tasted good. Side of bacon was plentiful and tasted good. No complaints – pretty yummy.
The bads. They just outweighed the goods.. 20 mins for coffee and tea. Another 20 for a simple refill. I finally spoke to the waitress about when the food will be out. An hour for french toast is just unacceptable. They had plenty of staff buzzing around. Maybe not enough in the kitchen. The staff should not say that your food should be coming out soon when they have no idea how long it will be. Also, beware it is SUPER LOUD INSIDE.
For me, we just won’t return. If you have a group of people and chatting, this place could be ideal for you. If you need a bite to eat and have to be somewhere, then this is not the place for you.
