I do not really know what real mainland Chinese mala is supposed to taste like, but speaking as someone who has eaten a lot of mala in Korea, this place is amazing. I definitely want to come back often.
If you can handle a fair amount of spice, Level 3—similar to Buldak—is a nice, moderate heat. If you are not great with spicy food, even Level 2 might feel pretty intense.
But if you love spicy food, Level 4 and up should be a good starting point.
(photo is after we already ate two pieces of the guobaorou!)

Delicious malatang and great flavor. I also love that they can make it non-spicy, so it’s kid-friendly too. Would come back again!

We generally try not to dine out in the U.S., but when we do, this is almost always the place we choose. We visited with our baby, and there is one high chair available. The staff thoughtfully brought a baby bowl without us having to ask, and we truly appreciated the consideration and kindness shown to our family. With our second child due soon, we are already planning to come back here for our last meal out before the birth.

My children love malatang, so we came to Shilla Kungfu, which is supposedly famous in the New Jersey area. It lived up to our expectations – the food was delicious and the service was friendly. The quality of the food was excellent, and the taste was perfect for our family. We’ll definitely be back!

Amazing foods and very quick. Both hotpot and stir fry options are great. The fried pork is a must try

My favorite go-to mala place! This is the best mala-tang I’ve ever had throughout the world. The staff is friendly, and other plates are also good.

Yummy food! I love spicy food and level 2 is perfect. I’ve done at least 3 takeouts and ate in for the first time and it was just as amazing. My favorite mala spot in Fort Lee:) staff is friendly and the place is so clean and cute.

Malatang with fresh ingredients. Mala chicken tender is really crispy and contains much meat.

Way too slow! Almost an hour wait for mala xiang guo for a tiny 6 table restaurant is ridiculous. Still waiting for the food.
Update: food was good but the kitchen workflow must be optimized. Final wait time was 50 minutes for dine in.

I had a great time with my meal! The food was delicious and I really enjoyed it. I wish they would use the traditional dough skin for the shrimp and chive dumplings instead of the wonton skins. But overall, it was a tasty experience and I’ll definitely be back next time!
