Reviews
I couldn’t even eat it because everything tasted so bad.
Then they told us we HAD to dine in because they didn’t have take out options.
???
That’s a lie.
Besides the terrible food we didn’t have good service either.
Don’t waste your time or money.
I prefer China Inn Buffett on Maple Avenue in Burlington.
I thought long and hard before deciding to write this review, but after visiting this hibachi buffet on two separate occasions — once around 2018 or 2019 and again recently — I felt it was necessary to share my honest thoughts. Sadly, nothing has improved since my first visit.
Most recently, I went for dinner and noticed right away how quiet the place was, with very few people dining in. The food looked like it had been sitting out for hours. The dumplings tasted off, almost spoiled, and the chicken was cut into tiny bite-sized pieces that were overcooked and difficult to chew — possibly an attempt to stretch limited portions.
One of the most confusing parts of the buffet is the raw hibachi section. It’s placed right next to the ready-to-eat buffet items, but there’s no signage to explain that the food is raw and meant to be cooked separately. That could be a serious health concern for guests who aren’t familiar with how hibachi buffets typically work.
What’s most disappointing is the lack of quality. I understand this is a family-owned business, but I truly hope they wouldn’t serve food like this to their own families. At $16.99 per adult (Monday through Thursday), the price is simply not justified by what’s being offered.
After giving this place a second chance, I can honestly say I will not be returning. It’s hard to believe it’s still operating in the mall, and I sincerely hope improvements are made for future customers.
I’m going to describe the experience while trying my best to leave out subjective words.
The employee at the register by the door was holding a tissue to his nose when we walked in. He then turned to the customer on the other side of the counter and held out his hand to take payment. We heard this employee coughing for most of the meal (and 1. This wasn’t a “dry cough”… 2. We were not sitting close to him).
The person who’d be called the hostess sharply asked “how many?” “Three” I replied and she just started walking towards the tables. She turned into a seating section and pointed with a roll of silverware to a table. “What you want to drink?” she asked, facing away, before we got to the table. We told her. She wrote something on a receipt style slip and walked away. My sons and I sat there a minute looking around (we’d never been here before). I said “I guess we can go…” so we all got up and went to check out the food. Most of it was very bright/vivid, in color (unnaturally so). The salmon looked like Victoria’s Secret edition (get it?), and anything red, yellow, or green was almost neon – and I’m not talking about the jello squares. I’m referring to the sauces on the meats, the soups, and vegetables. At one point my son drug a piece of the seaweed across his plate and left a green trail (I’m not kidding. Not exaggerating).
Still, I got a little sample of every type of chicken they had, some of the steak, shrimp, rice, spring roll…the usual. The bright spots on my first trip were the spring rolls – pretty good, actually. One type of chicken was decent (there was no label over it, so unsure which one it was), and a butter potato dish that had onions and green peppers was pretty tasty, though it could have used a little more seasoning, for my taste. The rice was fine, too.
I think every piece of meat I ate was room temperature.
Second trip I got a little more of the potatoes, another spring roll and a couple of pieces of sushi. The sushi was okay – not the best or worst I’ve ever eaten. Third trip, I was going back for one more spoonful of the potatoes and noticed a customer standing at a glass at the edge of the food area. Behind the glass was a gentleman cooking, so I went to observe. When at the glass, I looked behind me and realized that some of the food on that last bar was raw – RAW, raw. I kept watching and saw the customer hand his plate under the glass to the guy cooking, and the guy dumped it on the flattop. I began to realize he would cook your selection right in front of you. I made a small helping and took it to him. While he cooked, I made a little bed of rice for it. This food was actually pretty good. Not a lot of seasoning but still fresh and hot. I wish I’d known this was going on at the beginning of the meal but… no one gave us any information or direction, whatsoever. I didn’t have any dessert but my sons said the jello “did not taste like jello”.
My drink did not go empty.
They were pretty speedy about clearing plates.
Decor/appearance: outdated and did not scream “clean,” by any stretch. And you know how certain run-down places somehow appear comfy and kind of “lived-in”, so the dilapidation doesn’t bother you? This was not that.
Our 3 buffets and 3 drinks cost 72.95…….(trying to remain objective). If there is a sign with prices somewhere, I missed it.
To the owners: I don’t want to see anyone fail, but my thought is, I would be very surprised if you have a lot of repeat customers. Minimal “regulars,” if I had to guess. I’d love to see you guys improve, but my sons and I agreed that would probably be our only visit :/ I wish you guys the best.
