Mama Chang Philadelphia is the second Mama Chang location in the USA. It is an upscale casual restaurant in Colmar, PA. from legendary Chinese chef and restaurateur Peter Chang that celebrates the extensive culinary contributions of the Chang women including Peter’s grandmother, mother, wife and celebrated chef Lisa Chang, and daughter Lydia Chang. The menus place a heavy emphasis on Hunan, Szechuan, Hubei, and home-style Chinese cooking and recipes, many of which have remained in the Chang family for generations.

Mama Chang recently opened in the site of the Golden city Chinese restaurant.
Although there are full-size entrées, they specialize in tapas and small plate dishes to be shared. Of these, there is a plethora of choices on the menu. Limiting the order to a reasonable handful was difficult. Fortunately, we had a party of eight, which gave us an excuse to sample many of the dishes.
The bubble scallion pancake is worth ordering and just to experience the culinary artistry. The hot numbing crispy pork was exceptionally good although if you don’t like spicy food, I would steer clear of that. Mapo tofu was excellent, although quite spicy. It is similar to the spice level I’ve had at Szechuan restaurants. It needed some rice to go with it, and I had to order that separately after the fact. As commented in many of the reviews, the rice should be a part of the order and not an add-on. That is the culture here unless you’re ordering a noodle dish.
Peking duck was good and readily devoured by most of the family at our table. It is not something that I normally order so I’m not sure if the $78 price tag is reasonable.
But it was a whole duck.
Many of the other dishes were not spicy.
So there is something for everyone.
My wife raved about the combination, fried rice and thought it tasted similar to food. She enjoyed in Shanghai.
I think many of the kinks noted in the earlier reviews were probably ironed out. The service was excellent. Food was brought out when it was ready which is appropriate with a large assortment of small plates
There is adequate parking in a dedicated parking lot for the restaurant. It is convenient and right on 309 near the train station.
While it is more expensive than your local Chinese restaurant, I take the quality and taste make it worthwhile.

My wife and I went to Mama Chang’s four days after they opened and were plesently suprised.
Being a retired chef, I knew going in, things might not be “perfect” because the staff/kitchen might still be working the kinks out. With that being said, even with some very minor service missteps, the service was pleasent/efficent, the new space was very spacious, albiet a little noisy and most importantly the food was very good. Just know the food isn’t what you might be used to in most local Chinese restaurants and it wasn’t.

We wanted to sample a few items so we picked a few from various sections of the menu.
I love soup, so I started off with the hot and sour soup with duck and that was very good with a twang of vinegar and white pepper but it could have been a bit warmer. Still very good. Next came the fried pork dumplings with a spicy dipping sauce and they were light, airy and crispy. The sauce was delicious, and had a nice spice that suprised me. Then we split the roast pork pastry that was filled with a fantastic spiced roast pork with a hint of cherries inside a flaky pastry shell. We also split some Lo mein wirth chicken, shrimp and beef and since I hadn’t had Lo mein in decades, this was by far the best I’ve ever had. The noodles were al dente, with a nice coating of dark soy sauce. We finshed up with crispy duck spring rolls and they were very, very good.
Everything was very good, but slight service adjustments need to be made but as I stated earlier, we expected that. The food is excellent and I believe the sky is the limit.
We will be back!

This replaced the former Golden City so we were anticipating its grand opening for a while. The Dandan noodles and twice cooked pork belly were spicy and really good. The other two dishes we ordered were ok but I think it had more to do with how tasty the other two were, so depends what you order. Definitely recommend this restaurant!

A dining experience I won’t soon forget! Every bite was filled with flavor, the staff attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere is wonderful. Dining area has plenty of space and there is a wonderful bar. Whether a cocktail or a mocktail, their drinks are incredible. You’ll leave full and happy with your restaurant choice!

Husband and I went there last night and got Cumin lamb, half duck, scallion pancake, dry pepper chicken, and seafood pan fried noodle. We are from NYC so coming across authentic Szechuan is not so easy outside of cities. Everything tasted good. Best in the area. I hope they maintain their quality as time goes on.

Food was hot, fresh and delicious. It was our first time and we tried a bunch of food; cucumber salad, duck spring rolls, veggie dumplings, bubble scallion, chili oil noodle, veggie Lo main and duck fried rice. We could taste the authenticity in every bite! It was hard to pick a favorite. We can’t wait for our next visit to try more!

Nice Sichuan restaurant we need in Lansdale/Colmer. The salt and pepper shrimp and twice cooked pork have great tastes. The staff is attentive but they are still adjusting so be patient.

Great Chinese restaurant with interesting takes on classics. The duck and scallion pancakes are a must along with the deep fried eggplant.
Service was excellent and we felt very well taken care of.

We enjoyed the scallion pancake, salt and pepper shrimp, pork dumplings, duck spring rolls, crispy pork belly, combo fried rice, and half duck. Everything was fresh and tasty. Can’t wait to go back!
