Reviews
We first visited this restaurant in 2023 and had such a great experience that we returned again during our trip to Prague to show it to two friends visiting the city for the first time.
The food was once again absolutely delicious, and the service was perfect.
A place we can highly recommend and will definitely visit again!
I had a troubling experience at Ristorante Pizzeria Giovanni. The food was mediocre at best, it was dirty, and the service was almost nonexistent. Our wait times were long, and staff seemed disinterested.
The real issue, however, was the questionable payment practice. They displayed a sign stating 1 € = 25.50 Kč, and without giving us a choice, they charged my credit card in euros (29.92 € for a 763 Kč bill) using Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). This forced conversion likely included a hidden markup (3-7% or more), which is a common tourist trap. The market rate was around 24.30 Kč per €, meaning we paid more than necessary while they told us they do it because “it’s a better deal for the customer”.
We watched multiple tables struggle to get their checks and argue about this same practice, but the staff were dismissive. I’ll share my bill for reference.
This seems to be a deliberate tactic to exploit visitors, especially since we saw similar signs at other sketchy spots in Prague. I’ll share the sign so others are aware. If you must eat at one of these restaurants I’d advise paying in CZK cash to avoid being overcharged. Check your statement and dispute any extra fees with your bank. You also could just save yourself the hassle and eat elsewhere!
Shortly after placing our order, we were informed more than 10 minutes later that one of the dishes ordered by a friend was unavailable. By that time, the rest of the food was already being prepared, which prevented us from leaving together to find another restaurant. As a result, one person in our group was left without a meal. No real effort was made to offer a simple substitution for the missing item.
We had clearly explained that we wanted to share pizzas among three people, yet only two plates were provided. When we asked for an additional plate, we were given a tiny dessert plate. After requesting a normal one, another staff member claimed that there were no more plates available, which is unacceptable for a restaurant.
After finishing our main dishes, we were presented with the bill without having asked for it, making us feel rushed and unwelcome, even though we intended to order dessert.
The main waitress who served us — a young woman with brown hair — was consistently passive-aggressive and rude throughout the service. At one point, she took the menu out of my hands while I was still reading it, which felt disrespectful and inappropriate.
Additionally, it was very noticeable that younger customers were treated differently compared to older guests who appeared more affluent, who received more attentive and respectful service.
Overall, the service was unprofessional and made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We expected much better hospitality.
