I stopped by Summit Cafe today for the first time. I was met with friendly service and my order was taken swiftly. I was taken back by the menu not having prices listed. I ordered the vegetable omelette with home fries and toast. Came out to about 13 bucks. A little pricey for a vegetable omelette with only onions, peppers, and tomatoes.

The omelette itself was okay at best. Way too many tomatoes. They were a big filler ingredient and overall the omelette lacked seasoning and flavor. The home fries were much of the same. The food was hot and fresh. It came quickly. Overall it just lacked seasoning. I would likely come back to try more things on the menu. I want to like the place but today wasn’t the best first impression.

Love it here! Small intimate and historical. I wrnt to NC A&T and this is a piece of my Aggie home each time I return since 1997!

I recently stopped by this cafe, and it truly hit the spot. The atmosphere was calm and conducive to some quiet thought, and the coffee was excellent, just what I needed to kickstart my afternoon! It’s clear they put effort into creating a pleasant environment

Great food! Definitely try the cabbage. So flavorful! I’m almost glad they ran out of mac & cheese because I had a chance to try the cabbage. The burger was well seasoned and delicious, too.

Summit Cafe is tucked behind a Subway and if you blink, you’ll miss it, even though it’s very brightly painted in yellow and blue. Walking in, you can tell the place has been there for a minute. There are stools at the counter and five tables. It’s a very tight fit, but with enough room not to feel cramped. There is a short order cook station right behind the counter, apparently with a larger kitchen behind this (there’s a wall) with a small pass-through window for orders the grill can’t handle. The bathrooms are TINY! Do not think about getting a wheelchair to the bathrooms, much less IN them. They were, however, very clean and smelled good. You will also find a significant lean to Black empowerment and African American Gospel music for the atmosphere.
Service left a lot to be desired… They were short staffed, seemed to have a new line cook and were steady busy. One server seemed to be trying to handle the FOH – take phone orders, take table orders, ring out customers, serve food, refill drinks, etc., while the cook was trying desperately to keep up with all the orders while a third woman was running between these two trying to back each of them up. They desperately need more help. One of our orders came out five minutes before the other. We were a table of two.
Now let me tell you about the food… OMG! was it ever good! Even though there are NO PRICES ON THE MENU, we ordered with abandon. Their menu has both breakfast and lunch items that can all be ordered from 7am to 2pm Monday through Saturday. Some of their offerings include: shrimp and grits, fried whiting, corned beef hash, salmon patties, liver mush, chicken fingers and omelettes. Any of their menu items can be combined in some way to make you happy. I was thrilled to find a place where I could order lunch at 9:00am!!
I ordered the fried salmon patties (or I could have gotten them grilled) and fries, which came with toast. They were some of the BEST salmon patties ever! Full of flavor and fried with a nice crust. My friend ordered the liver mush with eggs, grits and toast. There was a lot of food and the liver mush was fried perfectly! It was all so very good. And I will mention this – I drink unsweetened tea and a lot of places just can’t get that right, but the tea here was delicious! Soft drinks come in a can and they make their own coffee, Folgers, out of a coffee canister like you would at home.
Our meal, without tip, was $31 for two plates. It’s a little pricey, but the portion sizes and the quality of the food are worth it. We’ll be back for sure because I want to get their corned beef hash and eggs. And as always, we try to support local!
