We had the best experience at Locals Lake Leelanau, and I just have to share. Every detail of this restaurant is rooted in supporting the local community — from the locally sourced food, the mural on the wall painted by the owner’s niece, to the thoughtfully curated merchandise in their shop. You can truly feel the passion for Lake Leelanau in everything they do.
And the food… absolutely delicious. A generous amount is served Everything tasted so fresh and thoughtfully made — you can tell how much care goes into every single dish.
The staff deserves a special mention — they are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely cared for, which makes such a difference and really sets this place apart.
What made it even more special for us was the kids’ playroom. As parents, finding a place that’s welcoming for families while still being such a beautiful, intentional space is rare — and our daughter absolutely loved it!
If you love supporting local, community-driven businesses and want a place that feels authentic, phenomenal food, warm, and thoughtfully done, make sure you stop here. It’s more than a restaurant — it’s a love letter to Leelanau!
The atmosphere itself is actually quite nice. It’s a good-looking building with a comfortable setting, and we were warmly greeted by our server, Emma, who was polite, kind, and the highlight of the visit.
However, everything after that fell short.
We learned they still don’t have a liquor license — not a dealbreaker — but things really started to go downhill when we went to order. We were told the beef brisket was out, and that anything listed as “brisket” would be served with pork instead. Again, we tried to roll with it.
We ordered the pulled pork sandwich (the Suttons Bay) with coleslaw, the nachos, and the kielbasa sandwich (Polka Fest) with “mustard caviar” — which, after asking, turned out to be just pickled mustard seeds.
The presentation looked fine, but the food itself was lukewarm at best. Nothing came out hot. Portions were okay, but the kielbasa wasn’t really kielbasa — more like a hotdog on a very thick bun with a bit of sauerkraut and mustard caviar. I ordered cornbread on the side, which arrived cold, along with cold butter. Neither the pulled pork nor the kielbasa buns were toasted or warmed, and there was no extra barbecue sauce served with the pulled pork, which is typically standard.
These are small but important details, and they added up quickly. Warm food, toasted buns, and properly served sides are basic expectations — especially when the restaurant wasn’t busy. We were one of only two tables at 5 PM on a Saturday night.
I hate leaving negative reviews, but this experience was significantly disappointing. With money as tight as it is, it’s hard to justify giving this place a second chance when so many restaurants in the area put more care and attention into the details. Unfortunately, we likely won’t be back.
My entree was the Tiger pizza which was absolutely to die for amazing. It was like a flavor rollercoaster with the habanero jam sauce, brisket, BBQ, cheese and whatever else on it that was just the absolute perfect combination of flavors. Mouth watering. You won’t be disappointed. Lots of cool history info. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this place!!!
If you’re thinking about stopping in…DO IT!
They got the hard part right! Every dish we had was excellent with the brisket standing out. They do not have a liquor license yet, but it would be a mistake to skip for that reason. Food is too good to pass up or even delay.
