Social Profile:

Haytad Urachyan, an Armenian-German who founded and owns Old German Bakery immigrated to the US from Cologne, Germany. Like a lot German expats living in New York/New Jersey area, he missed the incomparable taste of genuine German bread. His goal eventually became to introduce genuine German baked goods into the US market. Walking around Hoboken, Haytad was intrigued by the European style architecture, and the lively restaurant and bar scene in Hoboken, New Jersey. And so, it come to be that Haytad opened the doors to Old German Bakery in historic downtown Hoboken, New Jersey in January 2011. As a privately-owned family business, we want to make sure that we deliver only the best to our guests, just like Oma [Grandma] used to bake.

This place is worth the visit. I’m glad I was able to good amount of pastries to sample yesterday. The cinnamon swirl, raisin swirl, apple turnover and spinach savory pastry were a hit with our guests. Danke schön! The raisin swirl was one of my personal favorites. It had the right amount of sweetness and crunch. The dough lamination was done really well. I can’t wait to try the sourdough breads!

The sweet grandpa at the bakery was super enthusiastic, explaining every single bakery like his own baby, haha! Everything looked so fresh and delicious—I was only going to buy one but somehow ended up with four! The chocolate turnover is way better than the regular chocolate croissant in my opinion. Definitely coming back next time. Highly recommend!

Absolutely love the tomato pastry – it’s my go to anytime I walk by and it’s not a Monday. It’s a flaky pastry pocket with tomato sauce and olive flavor.

In the past there had been a more Parmesan heavy version which I miss. But this savory one still hits the spot.

Also used to be some indoor seating but I get that the pandemic has changed things. Now it’s stand outside the building which is still very charming.

There’s all sorts of other sweet treats, also a fan of the chocolate pastries. Absolutely worth a visit.

Weird- we did not go inside a bakery, we were served outside from a counter top. The pastries were delicious and fairly priced but don’t go expecting to walk INSIDE a store.
Noise? It’s the sidewalk.

This Bakery in Hoboken is a delightful spot for authentic German pastries and baked goods. Every slice is packed with rich flavors, especially the fruit and cream varieties. The Black Forest cake and German chocolate cake are absolute must-tries—they’re moist, decadent, and full of traditional taste. The owner’s passion for baking shines through in every bite, and his friendly behavior adds a personal touch to the experience. While the bakery can get busy during peak hours, the wait is well worth it for the quality and authenticity of the treats. If you’re in Hoboken craving a taste of Germany, this charming bakery should be at the top of your list!

This place has been open only with a cart in front of the actual bakery for at least past couple years I think. Not sure why they don’t accomodate customers into their bakery. Because it’s been only with a cart, I haven’t been curious enough to try out but grabbed couple of those pastries recently.

Pastry parts overall felt crunchy, thin, and little bit dry. Pastry itself was neither yay nor nay for me. I just imagined that’s how german style pastry is. I liked the flavor of savory tomato one but not so much for raspberry sweet cheese one. Latter had very subtle flavor of anything, so it wasn’t exactly spot on to my palate.

You have to try this bakery if you’re in the area cause I know if you’re a local you must know it. They have so many options: Bread, cakes, pastry. Just stop by and try it. My dad used to love the coffee so it must be good as well. I like that the cakes are not that sweet, it’s subtle which I like more. You can tell it’s a family business which makes it more adorable 🙂

My partner ordered a Black Forest cake for my birthday. I was very excited, and when I picked it up the owner was very insistent that this was a cake for family and close loved ones, not something to give away to anyone.

I am so glad I listened to him and chose not to bring it to my birthday party. This is the best cake we have ever had, bar none. It is decadent but light, the chocolate used is the perfect amount of bitter to compliment the cherry and mousse fillings, and the kirsch soaked cherries are heaven. This cake is well worth the price, many times over!

(The Mothman was our addition).
