Leon’s seems like THE place you go if you’re looking for custard in Milwaukee. I was not at all disappointed! The prices were super reasonable – I got a single scoop of chocolate custard, and it was just over two bucks. It was creamy and delicious; just what custard should be. I will definitely be back!

Leon’s is an iconic drive-in custard stand and a Milwaukee institution. They still play 1950s music as you browse their menu items. That’s cool! We popped in, spur of the moment, and stood in line to place our orders. Leon’s does offer some food items, but we were seeking custard treats. Yes, it’s creamy, tasty and served up pretty quickly. We had Butter Pecan scoops, and a Hot Fudge Pecan Sundae. If you’re in Milwaukee, you owe it to a sense of history to say, “Leon’s- yup I was there.”

If you’re looking for the heart of Milwaukee’s dairy-land heritage, look no further than Leon’s Frozen Custard. Since opening on May 1, 1942, this family-owned landmark has remained a preserved slice of Americana, standing as a neon-lit beacon on South 27th Street.
The Quintessential Vintage Vibe:
Walking up to Leon’s feels like stepping onto the set of Happy Days—and for good reason. Legend has it the drive-in served as a primary inspiration for Arnold’s Diner. Its early 1950s remodel is still intact, featuring:
* Iconic Neon Signage: Glowing bright against the Milwaukee night.
* Classic Drive-In Style: You can still order from your car or stand at the outdoor windows, leaning against the railings just like generations before you.
* A “No Frills” Tradition: In an era of endless customizations, Leon’s keeps it authentic—don’t look for sprinkles or dipped cones here; the focus is entirely on the quality of the product.
The “World’s Finest” Treats:
Leon’s boldly claims to serve the “World’s Finest Frozen Custard,” and local devotees rarely argue. The custard is exceptionally smooth, dense, and rich, thanks to a high butterfat and egg yolk content.
* The Big Three: Vanilla, Chocolate, and the legendary Butter Pecan are available every day.
* Rotating Specials: On weekends and special days, you’ll find fan favorites like Blue Moon, Maple Walnut, or Mint.
* Signature Sundaes: The Spanish Peanut Sundae and the Super Sundae (loaded with pecans and cherries) are local rites of passage.
Savory Staples.
While the custard is the star, Leon’s menu offers satisfying “old-school” comfort food that pairs perfectly with a heavy malt:
* Spanish Hamburgers: A uniquely seasoned, sloppy-joe-style sandwich that is a cult favorite.
* Chili Dogs: Simple, classic, and consistently delicious.
Whether it’s the middle of a humid July night or a sub-zero Wisconsin January, the parking lot at Leon’s is almost always full. It isn’t just a place to get dessert; it’s a living piece of Milwaukee history.

The finest frozen custard I’ve ever had. Since 1942, this vintage drive in has been serving fabulous, creamy frozen custard, sundaes, floats, burgers, dogs and fries! Don’t miss this step back in time. Service was fast and courteous. I highly highly recommend Leon’s Frozen Custard!

I really waffled between 4 and 5 stars… this is exactly what we were expecting, delicious frozen custard adding in a bit of nostalgia for the “old days”! Walk up service only, nowhere to sit, so expect to pick up and eat in your car or take to a park nearby. The shakes were great – especially the strawberry shake. There were real chunks of strawberries!
We also got grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs – at under $3 you can’t go wrong!
Parking lot was packed, line was long, but moved really quickly. Definitely a place you’ve got to try!

An institution and a staple for the Milwaukee community. I have tried to stop in every time I am in town as the frozen custard is so smooth , yet flavorful and oh so decadent that you cannot stop eating it .
I always get the same flavor as it doesn’t have to be complicated : simplicity and deliciousness of the butter pecan is out of this world .
There is often a line late at night but it does go quick . Parking is free and plenty scattered around the building and a separate small lot to the side .
If you have not stopped into this classic spot in Milwaukee make sure you do . Generations of people cannot be wrong .

Visiting from Delaware (used to live here 30 years ago) and Leon’s brought back so many memories. Once you see the neon you realize they have kept so much the same. Got to share true custard with my kids for the first time. Cups were empty!

World famous for what? Being highly overrated? My coworker and I went here for lunch because I have heard about Leon’s custard my whole life. I am an avid lover of frozen custard. I have had everything from Culvers to Shirl’s to Kopp’s to Caesars, and I will tell you, Leon’s is nothing special. DQ soft serve is more noteworthy. Normally I do not leave negative reviews, especially not for local small businesses. When I went to Leon’s, I could barely see the menu, I was rushed to order, I was not given the final price of the food, the hot dog on my “chili dog” was YELLOW. The grilled cheese was the star of the show and it was mid at best. To the owner of Leon’s: I sincerely wish you nothing but the best in business, but there are some serious improvements to be made. If I were in your shoes, I would ditch whatever meat supplier you are currently using and go with none other than Vienna Beef, I would ditch the “Spanish hamburger” in favor of a real cheeseburger (preferably a smash burger) and maybe use a higher quality custard mix. I hope you do not take offense to my review, I truly hope improvements are made, and that your business prospers regardless
