If our recent experience is any indication of the direction this place is heading, it looks pretty bleak. Communication was limited if there was any at all. The food was late getting out, but the veggie tray was nicely done. Vanessa (5 stars for her) was great and took good care of us. The atmosphere was a toss up…when we arrived at 4:45, there was a note on the door stating they would be closed for the evening (Saturday evening) due to staffing issues, the Lodge room was well lit, but when we got to the bowling part at 7:40, we were told, in no uncertain terms that they were closing at 8:30 (two hours early). So by the time we got shoes and started to bowl, and with a couple of balls getting stuck etc. we only got 5 frames in each. Then the lanes were turned off, and we had to leave. 10 bowlers, 5 frames each, plus $3.00 each for shoes and about 20 minutes of bowling time for $50. This note is about the actual day of our visit. This does not include all that was involved prior to. To say the least, customer service does not appear to be in their mission statement. Our group consisted of a Veteran Staff of Hospitality workers, and we all understand there are “those” days sometimes, and I can’t even say we are/were angry, but we cannot be silent. They could have done better, even with limited resources.

We brought a youth hockey team here for bowling and lunch, and despite an unexpected issue with the ovens, Jeff absolutely saved the day. He allowed us to bring in food and continue bowling, fully understanding that we were on a tight schedule. His flexibility and willingness to make adjustments kept everything running smoothly. Huge thanks to Jeff—we truly appreciate it!

My husband wanted fish fry on the last Friday of the official Lenten season. We decided to try out the Bierstube for the first time, and I’m glad we did!
The parking lot is pretty spacious, so no battling for a spot like you might need to in downtown. The bowling alley is in a separate part of the building; we couldn’t see hear any sounds from there in the restaurant. We seated ourselves, as a sign advised, and were quickly brought menus. Service remained pretty good throughout our visit.
We both had drinks. My husband enjoyed the Bierstube Red, while I had a bottle of Angry Orchard cider. Our cheese curd appetizer was delicious, the curds hot and squeaky with a nice layer of breading.
For my main dish, I had the grilled cheese on pumpernickel along with the standard seasoned potato chips. Everything was really good–the sandwich had a great amount of cheese with a good, stringy pull. My husband LOVED the all you can eat fish fry. He declared it to be his favorite out of the local restaurants we’ve tried. His fries were great, too. After finishing off the main plate, he could request more fish from our server, and she’d bring out a piece at a time on a saucer.
I was in an indulgent mood, so we had dessert, too–the apple strudel. It was really good, the strudel piping-hot all the way through, served alongside a big scoop of ice cream. A caramel drizzle added the perfect final touch.
We’ll definitely be back here, and probably on Fridays!

We had 3 of us for dinner on our way through. We each ordered 1/3 pound burgers and they were wonderful.

I can’t even rate the food because we never received any service for 40 minutes. We finished bowling which was good and the desk attendant was nice and printed the score card for us since it was our 4 year old’s first bowl. However, when we went into the restaurant, we seated ourselves as the sign says and no one attended to us. Eventually we asked for menus from the bar. Then we waited to be asked what we wanted. Eventually, went up to the bar for 10 minutes to order our food. No one said anything to us the entire time, it was like we were invisible. This is very sad because the food is good (from memory) and unique, and the bowling alley is a desperately needed activity in Red Wing. I worry about this location going out of business.

In town for the night. Decided to try a German restaurant. Staff was helpful and friendly. Had the Sauerbraten meal and Reuben with onion rings. Both were great choices. The Reuben sandwich was filled with meat. Onion rings were great. My husband enjoyed his Sauerbraten meal.
