Best Things
Wonderful experience!!! Food was amazing. Best craft cocktail’s in Sturgeon Bay. Atmosphere and Hospitality priceless. This will be a must stop anytime I am in Sturgeon Bay or just passing through.

There’s a lot I would overlook and forgive due to the chic ambiance and overall vibes, but our experience at Crate was one of a thousand cuts. No one thing was unforgivable, but the accumulation became a problem.
Service was… fine. We walked in. No greeting, just stares from staff. We walked in further & were told to seat ourselves & so we did & then we waited. It was like they forgot about us. I was about to remind them that we were there when the bartender said that our server would be right with us. She looks out for him. Both seemed like decent people. Not sure if there overwhelmed with service but there were gaps. Once given menus, we ordered drinks & meals all at once. A part of my meal came out before our sodas could arrive & then the rest didn’t come out for a half hour. We had one check in for our table, but we never got drink refills & had to wave down the server for a hot sauce. It was fine. Not great, not awful. Forgivable.
But things were off. The water had a fishy aroma. My hypothesis is that unsealed carafes are kept with the fish in the walk in… giving the water a subtle hint. My diet soda was light on syrup. The pretty good salad was served on a barely large enough plate meaning things kept falling off my plate annoyingly. The tiny baguette with bread service was toasted too hard and came out way after my soup had been delivered.
But the soup. It was the Clam French Onion Soup. Doesn’t that sound delicious? I love French onion. The caramelized onions in a beef broth with bread & cheese broiled onto the top. Add clams, maybe sub the beef base for something more like a boullibase? I was all anticipation for this mash up. But what a got was… a thick, creamy soup with barely cooked onions & a sour, vinegar-y taste. The cheese on top hadn’t turned brown from broiling, but was charred black in spots, probably from a torch. And the croutons baked underneath were strangely chewy. I only ate a small bit before stopping because I did not enjoy the taste, but I did not come across any clams, just large chunks of tangy white onion. I sent it back. The waiter was all apologies & niceness and took it off the bill.
Finally, and probably most damning for my husband, the portions were small despite the price. He stopped for a sandwich on the way home, still hungry. I apologized to him for choosing this restaurant.

Let’s start with the positive: Great atmosphere and service. A good cocktail menu. Nigiri was good. So was the Avocado roll!
Food was ok, pork belly ramen was pretty bland and pork was dried out.
Only flaw with service was the time to get drinks and food out..
*Not kid friendly unless your kid likes sushi or expensive steak. 🙂

cool atmosphere, great menu options and great sushi. also they had very good sake cocktails. oysters were awesome.we had a great dinner there. the only couple things I noticed is that we were not greeted right away when we entered. it was a little weird that they didn’t have a dress code for their servers or bartenders. one sever was wearing Jean’s. the atmosphere there seemed too nice for that. the bartender was wearing leather pants and a skimpy crop top. which I thought was not proper apparel for an employee at a nicer restaurant.

A unique and delicious dining experience right in historic downtown Sturgeon Bay! We tried Crate after taking a shop owner’s recommendation, and we’re so pleased we did! Unusual appetizers (the dim sum and baked chips are pictured) and a great staff only added to the experience. The sushi rolls we tried were nothing we’d tried anywhere before, and they were quite tasty, as were our saki mixed drinks. Overall, a wonderful experience!

I would recommend the sushi, the Geisha Girl roll is great. The ramen was sub par as the pork belly was pretty dry and overall the bowl was not very flavorful. Chili oil was recommended to us but I would not recommend using it at all. It was more of a vegetable stock soup instead of traditional ramen. The pickle pepper drink also was underwhelming and didn’t even taste like pickle.

Our first experience was great. Chic style but all the staff made us feel welcomed. Pricey but not beyond what’s typical for fancy sushi places. It was delicious – both the food and the drinks. We’ll definitely go back.

I had been here with my husband who loves sushi, and I’m not usually a fan, but found myself craving the Nutty Asparagus roll, so came back for a girls night and tried a variety of things. We loved the Yasai Hi and the hot edamame, and since we had several who are gluten free in our group, really appreciated the care they took in checking what was safe for us to eat and avoiding cross contamination. Bennett was our amazingly helpful server who made the evening a lot of fun.

Visited as guests when participated in a Door County Trolley Tour. We did have a very limited menu prior to arriving so staff could accommodate a large crowd efficiently. We ordered a pulled pork topped with cole-slaw sandwich with side of steak fries which we thought was very tasty. The restaurant does not serve regular cocktails but serves saki cocktails along with wines & craft brews. Nice decor & clean. Getting a bit rundown in ladies room though. We would eat here again & are interested in their regular extensive menu.
