South Street Cheesesteaks is a solid spot that delivers a generally enjoyable experience, even if it doesn’t quite live up to the hype in every category. I tried both the beef and the chicken cheesesteaks, and while they were good, they didn’t fully stand out as exceptional. The meat was flavorful and cooked well, but the overall combination lacked that extra punch that makes a cheesesteak truly memorable. They’re satisfying and worth ordering, just not something I’d go out of my way for repeatedly. They did at least pack them full of toppings, portion sizes definitely lived up to their advertising.
Where this place really surprised me was the hotdogs. The quality of the dogs themselves is very high, with a great snap and rich flavor that instantly sets them apart from average options. They were honestly amazing and ended up being the highlight of the meal. If you’re on the fence about what to order, the hotdogs alone make the visit worthwhile.
The cheese sticks, on the other hand, were just okay. They weren’t bad by any means, but they didn’t stand out compared to similar appetizers elsewhere. Overall, South Street Cheesesteaks is dependable, with standout hotdogs, decent cheesesteaks, and average sides. Service was friendly and fast, prices felt fair for the quality, and the location makes it an easy, casual stop for most diners overall.

South Street Cheesesteaks is easily my favorite late-night discovery in downtown Charleston. The cheesesteaks are totally legit and packed with flavor, and the owner is such a nice guy. Just a heads up that it’s carryout only, so definitely order ahead online so you can just grab it and go. It is super convenient that they are open until 3 AM, making it the perfect spot after a night out. Whether you get the whiz or provolone, the portions are huge and hit the spot every time.

Ok so look….wonderful gentleman who I think is the owner comes on to my job and leaves me a sample. FLAVOR & TENDERNISM!! Nothings beats a Philly cheesesteak and this is about as close as you’ll get to an authentic one here in Charleston. The meat is seasoned perfectly and flavorful, love the whiz and peppers, and the they don’t skimp! The owner is friendly and down to earth. Even more the reason to support his business. I would highly recommend when you get that itch!

Growing up in the Philly area, I’m no stranger to a good cheese steak, and I’m always looking for a taste of home now that I’ve moved away.
While it’s obvious the owner knows what a good cheese steak is made of, I don’t think they entirely deliver on their goal.
The regular cheese steak consists of what any good cheese steak should. A fresh roll, thinly shaved beef, provolone (or another cheese like Whiz or American if you’re not a purist) and grilled onions.
The guy making them was super friendly and told me they get their rolls baked daily by Saffron. He said they are Amoroso-style, but I didn’t find the roll to be quite right. A little too soft. There should be a slight crust to the outside, a little chew as you eat it.
I’m pretty sure they gave me American cheese instead of provolone, but either way, my biggest issue with the sandwich was that it was so overwhelmingly cheesy that I couldn’t taste anything else. I think the mark of a good Philly cheese steak is a meaty flavor, where you can taste the quality of the steak, complemented by just enough cheese and slight onion flavor.
It’s a good attempt, but not quite the real deal, in my opinion!

I waited a long time for my order. Requested extra crispy fries and received undercooked fries. The most upsetting thing is that multiple people who ordered AFTER me received their order before me. I tried calling to let them know I moved closer to the door per the instructions of the hostess. The phone just rang until it transfered to the manager’s cell.
I got out of my car to get an update, the cook had no clue of my order. He forgot. He was apologetic, but this wasn’t a great first impression. Also, why can’t paying customers enter the establishment? The sandwich was okay, not worth what I went through to get it.

Tried them just a minute ago for the first time. Order ahead online to save yourself a little time. The steak is fresh and the quality is solid. This was a little bit thicker steak than the super thin slices you normally see and in a good way. I did extra meat and it was a full sandwich. Tons of wiz, not skimpy at all. The owner was there and was very interactive and friendly. The lady working was very nice and knew down to the minute how long my order would be. I had a good first experience and it won’t be my last. Go support this guy putting quality first.

I have been wanting to go here for several months.Because they are one of the only places open late downtown. I finally got to go and I can say , without exaggeration that the wizard cheesesteak , I think , is the best sandwich i’ve ever had. And it’s safe to say this will be a place we come back to regularly. Its definitely worth a it also helps to order it ahead of time.

Wife and I both got 8in beef Cheesesteaks. They were absolutely Phenomenal. One of the best Cheesesteaks ever. Owner was awesome. He was trying to do inventory. He’d just returned from a trip and was kind of late opening. Not a problem with us. After an explanation of what he had going on He wound up coming to our and taking our order. He kept apologizing. He was extremely nice. He hand delivered the subs when they were done. Quick drive back to the hotel and now I’m stuffed. I definitely recommend this awesome service and awesome food.
