A longstanding restaurant apparently been open since 1962. With such a life span they must be doing something right. Staff are friendly and efficient. They offer a variety of more ‘traditional’ non takeaway style Chinese foods. We had a variety of meat, seafood and veg/rice. All were well cooked, I couldn’t fault any of the dishes. Will certainly return

Decent Dim Sum, but Service Needs Improvement

We were looking for a good dim sum spot in Newcastle and came across several recommendations for Happiness Inn, so we decided to give it a try.

First impressions weren’t the best—the restaurant felt a bit run down, and since it’s located upstairs, we weren’t sure if there was wheelchair access. It’s definitely a no-frills kind of place. That said, it wasn’t too busy when we arrived (about a third full on a Saturday lunch), and we were seated quickly.

However, what really disappointed us was the lack of service. No one came over to ask about our tea or drinks—a basic courtesy in any dim sum restaurant. Even more frustratingly, other diners who arrived after us were served tea and had their orders taken without even asking. Despite there being four or five waiting staff standing around, we had to gesture for attention after sitting there for about 15 minutes. I was close to walking out, but my partner managed to flag someone down.

Thankfully, the food itself was decent. While some dishes were a bit bland, the portion sizes were generous, and to our surprise, the prices were very reasonable—much lower than expected, making it great value for money. However, another letdown was the lack of egg tarts—they only serve them on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, which was a disappointment.

Overall, Happiness Inn is worth trying if you’re after affordable dim sum, but don’t expect great service. Be proactive when trying to get the staff’s attention!

Visited here for a birthday lunch and had a great experience overall. The interior has a traditional vibe with a comforting, nostalgic feel. We arrived around 12 p.m. as the restaurant was just starting to fill up, and within 30 minutes, most of the tables were occupied. The service was quick and efficient throughout.

We ordered noodles, fried rice, kung pao chicken and shrimp dim sums and a pot of jasmine tea. The food was genuinely delicious and satisfying.

The portion sizes are quite large. We definitely over-ordered, but we packed the leftovers. It’s great value for money, and the overall experience was lovely.

I have passed this restaurant so many times and I finally went inside. The interior looks very traditional and the food is quite authentic. I ordered Black pepper diced beef, Turnip cakes, and Beef rice rolls. My personal favorite is turnip cakes. They are so tasty. I had these cakes somewhere before and it was too chewy for me, but this one was perfect. The Balck pepper diced beef was very good as well, but I wish they added a bit more onions. The beef rolls were great as well, and especially the ones on the bottom that soaked in the soy sauce tasted even better. I would have to come back to this place as I saw hot and sour soup and yolk buns on the menu. Highly recommend this place to anyone who likes dim sum or Hong Kong/Cantonese food!

I’m now based in London but whenever I come back to Newcastle, this is the only Chinese restaurant I go to. It serves a mixture of Cantonese and mainland China dishes. The food is authentic and super tasty, portions are large. I’m not sure what the previous poster was complaining about in terms of service – every time we come here the service has been consistently excellent. Prices are cheap especially for the quality and quantity of food you are getting.
We’ve been to all the Chinese restaurants in Newcastle. Without a doubt, this restaurant serves the best quality Chinese cuisine in Newcastle by a mile!

The restaurant is a little shabby but the food is outstanding.
We arrived 45 minutes before they closed so were told we could only choose main dishes.
They gave us 2 separate menus – one of the “Anglicised” usual Chinese dishes that you’d expect to see; the other contained traditional Hong Kong dishes.
We ordered from the latter & then discovered that the portions were huge!
We had tomato & egg; lotus root, potato & sticky rice cakes in sizzling spicy pot then king prawns in a Typhoon Shelter sauce. Stunning.
Can’t wait to go back.

We ordered King Prawn Fried Rice ( the best fried rice I’ve ever had so far) and Beef with Mixed vegetables. Chicken and sweetcorn soup and Won Ton Soup (the best won ton soup I’ve too…) Had a pint of cola and tap water. We received a free prawn crackers too. Decent portions. Thank you Jason.

They have meal deal as well minimum of 2 persons.

Give a try and you won’t regret it.

Good Cantonese style cooked food here! Service is pleasant and fast. Restaurant is located on the first floor just a stone’s throw from Newcastle China Town. My opinion the food here is better than many of the restaurants in Chinatown.

I went there with my partner on Friday the 13th and we were both disappointed by their service. First of all, they served everyone a bowl of prawn crackers but not us. Secondly, they didn’t serve us the drinks we ordered despite asking for it while they were serving us our food. What pissed us off was that they served everyone else their drinks – the ones that ordered way after us. I’m unsure why their service has become this bad, as I have been to happiness in at least 3-4 times before this trip. This is utterly disappointing especially when it’s supposed to be our pre-valentine’s day and advanced Chinese new year meal
