I can’t speak to the service or atmosphere since this was takeout brought to me by friends but I can absolutely speak to the sandwich. And unfortunately, it was… tragic.

I ordered what’s been, in the past, an amazing chicken cheesesteak (or whatever it’s technically called):
No green peppers, add banana peppers. Side of fries. Simple. Comforting. Reliable.

What I received was essentially a whole loaf of bread with a light suggestion of chicken, a few onions, and what appeared to be a ceremonial dab of mayonnaise. In other words: dry, chewy, and just plain gross.

There were no banana peppers, which was really the only customization. And the first red flag? When I picked up the sandwich and it felt as light as a feather. Never in my life should a cheesesteak feel weightless.

It genuinely seemed like someone tried to compensate for the lack of filling by throwing in approximately one pound of cold fries. That strategy did not work.

To add context: my friends were doing me a solid by picking up dinner and coming over to keep me company after a pretty rough week recovering from an accident. I was sore, cranky, and just wanted a hearty, comforting sandwich. Instead, I got a bread-based metaphor for sadness and disappointment.

I’ve had good experiences here before, which honestly makes this more frustrating. I hope this was a one-off and not the new standard because no one craving comfort food deserves to unwrap a sandwich and feel sadness.

Do better for the next person. Unfortunately, you won’t be getting another order from me.

Wonderful food and service. Missing one start due to the seats dropping in when you sit. They have food you can’t really find anywhere else. Fried artichokes and zucchini fries were good. I got the Italian grinder. It was very good and my friend got the calzone. Very large portions. Prices are reasonable. Server was very friendly. They also serve a verity drinks, including bottled beers and wine. Home style environment.

The only thing I don’t like about Pop’s is the delivery/take out boxes. They are cardboard and don’t transport and save well. The mussels were served in a delicious broth which oozed out of the container. The salad was in no way edible in its cardboard box if one was trying to eat it without proper plates or utensils. The food is great and the people are nice. I would suggest rethinking the takeaway containers.

I was out of town on holiday and went there with family. What a GREAT find. The service was first class and server was so friendly and helpful.
The food (I had “make your own” pizza) was superb!
The portions were very generous. Everyone in our group (we were eight) loved there food.
I’ll definitely go back the next time I’m in Raleigh. I highly recommend!!

We’ve lived near here for years, and love pizza but somehow hadn’t tried Pop’s. We finally rectified that serious mistake.

Fantastic pizza!!! Great sauce, cheese, and NY-style crust.

We also tried the calzone and it was superb.

Service was very friendly; the young man who waited on us at the counter was very nice (I can’t remember his name but I think it was initials like “AB” or something like that)

The atmosphere is informal but very pleasant.

We will most definitely return. A great find!!!

I discovered Pop’s through some friends who are regulars. I quickly found out why! While I haven’t explored the whole menu yet, I have found my favorite pizza and the salads are so fresh and with the perfect blend of flavors. Pop’s is family owned and never disappoints. I encourage you to check them out!

My husband and I stopped in this past weekend while making a stop to the post office. We were looking for lunch and decided to drop in on this establishment. We ordered a slice of pizza, fried zucchini and a Chicken Parmesan all were horrible. The zucchini fries was overcooked, the chicken parm was flavorless including the sauce and the pizza was burnt on the bottom and lacked flavor. Disappointing..

Consistency of the food served varies every time the family and I dine in. Sometimes served well portioned, others very skimpy.
ALSO—there’s a disconnect between the 1 and only front house order taker and the kitchen staff.
As most customers would agree, the appetizers and soups and salads need to be served to the customer BEFORE the main course and pizzas are served. It’s not a magic trick to serve food properly.

Pop’s is my daughter’s favorite place for calzones. I preordered a take-out calzone for her and it was already waiting for me when I walked in the door. As always, the calzone was freshly made and hot. It really hit the spot for my daughter, and ended a tough day for her on a high note.

Years ago, I asked if they would use my vegan cheese for the pizza I’d ordered. They graciously did so for a couple of years. Then, they added vegan cheese to their menu and we’ve enjoyed their pizza ever since. Today, I was ordering online and pleasantly discovered that they’d added a substantial line of vegan pizzas with assorted plant-based meats and various combinations. I ordered the vegan pepperoni pizza and when I went to pick it up, the chef there recognized me and reminded me that this all began with me bringing my own vegan cheese! Tonight’s pizza was excellent and we can’t wait to try all their other options. I highly recommend Pop’s Backdoor for their delicious pizzas (and much more) and for their extraordinary customer service!
