In my own way I am living Anthony Bourdain’s life. Hunan Restaurant gets a 4 fortune cookie rating out of 5. (This is the spicy range, up to 5.)
The Google star rating was 4+stars so I thought it would be good to try, plus I wanted general tso’s chicken which is mentioned a few times and plus it was nearby the hotel I stayed at. Instead of General Tso’s, I quizzed the host about one of his top favorites. Chicken with garlic sauce which you can adjust your level of spicy on. At least one of the spicy components was roasted chili flakes. With the amount of fried rice on the side it was the perfect amount for the dish. The rice was on the drier side and didn’t have much more than onions in it but it was still good. Especially with the sauce in the chicken. 4 packets of soy sauce came (which I didn’t use) and also would have been enough even if I went heavy on the soy sauce. The cuts of the chicken and onions were angular like you see more in Asian cuisines. There was also bamboo, water chestnuts, scallions, garlic, green bell peppers, spicy components, and carrots that looked like the sun on the horizon. See my photo.
Oh- there are almost 3 dining rooms, one of which looked like an 8 person table in a pretty blue room, another flanking it (the round 8 seater is up a platform) and one on the complete other side. I wish I had taken a picture.
There is a fish tank, and the take out is on a rack by the door. There was only one couple in there and I couldn’t believe it or maybe they were having an off night. If they did it, it would be a great place for a party on one of the sides. Although there was only one couple at a table, it seemed that the take out was pretty steady.
I also got 4 fortunes with my meal. I always always highly recommend them.
One of the reasons for no 5 star is the takeout leaked through the bag which is an easy fix for them in packaging. There were no utensils but I had a fork on hand (even traveling) and also no napkins.
I would be happy to include this place in my line up of go-tos, if I lived in St. Joseph, Mo.
4 dishes we had was astonishing it was like eating cardboard
The Good The Bad and the Ugly, if this place needed a title for a food related movie this would be it! The Good The Egg rolls were just that. As well as the fried rice. The Bad: multiple entrees were soupy with sauce. Absent of good fresh ingredients or flavors that grab you. The Bad: the empress chicken had a funky smell and didn’t taste that far from its smell. The crab ran-goo was crunchy but lacked good flavor. Also why in the heck did the sweet n sour sauce coagulate? Weird, but my appetite died today. As we did not finish our plates. And we we’re a bit deceived by appearance and reviews. I would give Hunan another try. But it would definitely be in person. And only one time.
I cannot recommend at this time. Because I feel a bit robbed of my money for the price of a poor quality product!
I’ve never ever in 15 years ever been impressed with this place. Husband wanted tonight but will not order there again… yuck
