Heard about this place from our local camp host Lewis. Thank you Lewis!!! Good home cooking from southern New Mexico. Sahvanna took great care of us and we enjoyed everything we tried. My wife had the chilli relleno plate. I had the combo plate with fried egg and onions. Sahvanna suggested milk in a bowl with my chocolate homemade layer cake. So good just like when I was a kid. Come as a stranger they will treat you like family. I would go back again and again.

A patient of mine recommended this place to me, and it did not disappoint. The food was fresh and full of flavor. The portion sizes were large. We sat on the enclosed back area, which had a nice view. The waitress was attentive to our needs. The drive there was nice with amazing views along the way.

This is a secret place that you’ll only know about if a friend told you! It’s so hidden that it’s difficult to find. But, the locals seem to know the spot well! Their food is so delicious it’s like a taste of a home cooked meal. Their chips and salsas is to die for!

Just a short hop off the highway, but it feels like you are tucked into a cabin in the mountain forest. It is a favorite place to eat if we are ever in the area. It’s peaceful looking at the beautiful mountains through the big sunny windows. Such a cozy & quaint restaurant, and the food was delicious. Waitstaff were super friendly, too. Our waitress has worked there 15 years. We ordered Sour Cream Enchilada Plate (green) and the Chili Relleno Plate. The tortilla chips & salsa tasted homemade, too! Everything was, “Yum!!!”

I AM A VEGAN AND FOUND YOU ONE WINTER AND ORDERED THE ENCHILADAS WITH RED SAUCE WITH NO CHEESE. THE SMELL OF THE WOOD BURNING STOVE WAS LIKE HOME. BUT YOUR WAITRESSES WERE REAL LADIES AND LET ME KNOW THEY CAN HANDLE THAT ORDER CRUELTY FREE NO PROBLEM. THANK YOU GUYS FOR A WONDRFUL EXPERIENCE DINING OUT.

Exceeded Expectations

On my last trip to New Mexico, I went to the Mescalero Apache Reservation to visit old friends while on my way to Albequerque. After catching up and taking a drive up the mountains, we were starving. My local Food Crew suggested we head down to Old Restaurant, a local hot spot serving Mexican and New Mexican themed foods. Since I was just in Mississippi and Texas, dining on seafood and steaks, Mexican food was just what I needed.

Old Road Restaurant has gone through some changes over the years, but seems to have hit its niche, and has been serving great Mexican fare for quite some time. The interior is very rusty and country style with wood trims and country themes throughout. There is an open downstairs area (maybe a banquet area or extra seating) clean and shiny with antiques and memories of a bygone era. Check it out on your next visit.

Now to the food…The menu has many great classic choices like Tacos Enchiladas, Chili Rennello’s, and many other items. Our brought out fresh homemade nachos with their in-house made Pico, mild and hot salsa, we also ordered some queso for those perfectly made chips. Our server was very friendly and gracious and patiently took our orders.

My choice that afternoon was classic tacos with Beef, Chicken, Pork, all very well made and served with delicious homemade rice, beans, fresh sour cream, and shredded Mexican Cheddar. Wow, this meal hit the spot and surprisingly was not that heavy. All of us enjoyed our meals as we talked and got a chance to catch up. The food was very affordable and the Old Road Restaurant is great for solo eaters, couple groups and special occasions. If you are ever passing through the Mescalero area, you must stop in try this place, its one of the best places around to eat.

When we first got there, our waitress started out with a nice attitude and took our order, but her attitude changed quickly when I refused to eat one of the appetizers that was brought out,I looked at it and even tried to stir it around to see if it would mix but it was clumping and greasy and just gross,so I called her back over and asked her to remove and take it off my bill,I even asked if that’s how it’s supposed to look, and her response was yes. There was no way I was even going to try it,but she got upset and took it away. Well, after that, our food came out,we thanked her, and she just walked away, but she didn’t ask if we needed refills or if I would like any salsa with my food. We didn’t get refills until we were almost halfway done with our meal,I guess I made her that mad. I can say, though, that our food was good and didn’t come out looking like greasy or gross. From what I understand is this lady is the owner, and if she is, I wouldn’t think she would treat customers the way she did,I’ve only eaten there one other time but had a different waitress and she was nice. So I guess it’s who get as a waitress,is the kind of service you will get and the kind of food you order is what you will get.

This place is/was my favorite place to eat chile rellanos! But, drive there yesterday and the restaurant is closed. I heard from locals that it is permanently closed. Can anyone else attest to this???
