We really wanted to like this place. Was excited to see that they had oyster pooboy, but it was a really distasteful experience! First off we were there when they first opened. We ordered seafood gumbo, catfish and chicken tender combo(that don’t come with no fires) oyster pooboy, and a pecan pie and a small bowl or eetouffee. All this came up to a $69. We dined in and when they brought the food out they severed it in cardboard Togo
Bowls. Seafood gumbo was terrible, it had bland crab scrap pieces, okra was hard, and two big oysters that was very strange. The bowl was shallow and it was more gravy than it was substance. They had a side of rice that seemed to be uncle Ben microwave minute rice, no seasoning , the gumbo lack true flavor, 2 out of 10 experience. Next was the oyster pooboy it honestly needs to be removed from the menu. Oysters acutely scared me they were very mushy with an unpleasant taste. 0 out of 10. The shrimp eetoufee was good. We ordered a small for $9 that came in a very small cup with three shrimp over rice, I thought the cup was extremely small for $9 but the shrimp was the best thing we ate. Next was the combo plate was thrown off that a $15 combo plate don’t come with fries, fries were an extra $5. A little extreme. But besides that the chicken tenders were amazing very tender, the catfish was okay I thought it could have been fried harder and it had no flavor, but it was good fresh once it started to get cold it wasn’t good. 7 out of 10. The pecan pie was amazing a 10!

The service was bad in our eyes. They were just standing around we were the first customers. The guy kept coming and grabbing our trays while we were still eating. He was there grabbing stuff before we even got up, like they were watching us eat and as soon as we were done he came and grabbed our trays and we still had stuff on the trays. I was literally trying to hurry to put the last piece of pie in my mouth to put the trash on the tray the worker was holding. Like what if we wanted to sit back for a minute we definitely felt rushed. There was no hot sauce bottles so we had to use hot sauce packets at a pooboy shop? Wasn’t mad to spend such a large amount of money to support a black owned business but was very upset at the quality, and service of this place. I will not be returning and I would not recommend anyone to the place. And if you do go order the shrimp chicken and pie.

Well, I was going to grill on the night I ordered, but this recipe came on the TV for Gumbo and I was pretty much redirected in another direction and found a little place called The Gumbo Pot. I went through my delivery service of choice and placed an order for three items:

Gumbo Z’Herbs (Collard Greens, Turnip Greens, Mustard Greens, and Okra)
Gumbo Ya-Ya
Chicken Creole

I took a couple batches of photos here. The first are the “As Delivered” photos and the second is after I made it more presentable for a family dinner. You’ll pretty much be able to look at them and figure out what is what so I’m not going to waste your time reading useless prattle.

Now, the first thing I noticed was the fact that all containers were clearly labeled with what was inside. Not many do this, so that was quite appreciated on the entrees and if a person can’t figure out rice…well…yeah. Speaking of Rice, this rice was beautifully cooked and kicked steamed rice from a Chinese place straight out of the ballpark! Awesome rice here. I used the Rice as a base for the Gumbo Ya-Ya as well as the Chicken Creole when I plated it (in the two black bowls. White is Gumbo Z’Herbs). It made an excellent base.

Onto the Gumbo Ya-Ya… I thought this was pretty good! I don’t know much about Gumbo, but I felt it was pretty good. I did find some Bay Leaves that weren’t pulled out, so you might want to look out for those. Flavor wise though, I have no complaints and as long as you like that bit of slimy from the Okra, you are good to go here!

Chicken Creole:
This was amazing. The meat was tender and cooked perfectly, and I mean came apart with a fork perfect and flavorful. This will not disappoint and I suggest giving this dish a try!

Gumbo Z’Herbs:
I wasn’t quite as thrilled as I expected with this one. Perhaps it is because I first had Collard Greens in Georgia? I don’t know, but I’m not an expert on Collard Greens, so I can’t provide much more information than how I felt about them. The vinegar was a bit strong, but they were cooked perfectly and well worth exploring!

Final Verdict:
The Gumbo Pot provided a great tasting meal and they offer a lot of options to choose from and I’m pretty sure you can find something for everyone on this menu. I know I had to make some serious choices and I will definitely be ordering again. Go see these folks or order and support small business!!

I FaceTimed my boyfriend while he was dining in this restaurant. He was immediately reprimanded by an employee for having his phone on speaker phone. If him being on the phone was an issue they could have approached him politely and asked him to turn his phone down. A paying customer should not have been dealt with in such a rude manner.

Edit:
There was no one else in the restaurant at the time. And he was never asked politely to lower volume. I could hear the whole interaction.

I ordered the grandmas gumbo. Told them that I don’t want scallops. I paid 20 dollars for a bowl of ocra. When I called and spoke to the owner he said I put 3 shrimp, 3 sausages, and 3 pieces of chicken…. Like ok??? That’s it for 20 bucks?!? Taste was mid. And I will never get the gumbo here again.

Food is amazing here. Have eaten a majority of it. No cash accepted. Gumbo filled with big chunks of sausage and chicken. Same with jambalaya. Sides were all delicious. They are in the plaza next to Little Caesars since late 2024. Older reviews are irrelevant. I highly recommend. Better than other Cajun/New Orleans restaurants in San Diego. Trust me. I’ve had it all.

If you don’t like oysters, consider ordering Grandma’s gumbo instead. I had seafood gumbo, and it was terrific.
Food here is fantastic!

Came here with a large group of ten and we all really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The Jambalaya and Chicken Etouffee were EXCELLENT! My boyfriend is allergic to seafood and the staff took great pains to prepare his food in separate pans to ensure there was no possibility of him having a bad reaction. There were also plenty of options non-seafood items on the menu or that they were able to modify if desired. The chef even made him a special chicken appetizer (that wasn’t delicious) that wasn’t on the menu! Everyone ordered something different and I only heard glowing reviews. We shared some things as well and everything I tasted was delicious! Enjoyed an incredibly moist and flavorful piece of rum cake to top it off.

Overall this place is a gem for authentic and delicious Cajun style food. Staff was attentive and went above and beyond to ensure our group had an excellent experience. We most definitely did.

I’ve been enjoying the food I’ve gotten there so far very much and i think others would too.

A comment though, its not the first time but especially on this last order, the bag, the food containers, and just the air inside smelled/tasted like laundry detergent from the laundromat in the shopping center. I have been several times and want to come back but I cannot eat from containers that smell like laundry detergent, because if it smells like it when I lean over the container, I know it is in the food

I’d suggest investing in a high quality air filter that filters out VOCs or at least having the food containers in something sealed that you only open just before using them so that they don’t have much of a chance to absorb the taste/smell of laundry chemicals. Although that wouldn’t solve the problem if the food is cooked in the open.

I know it’s not their fault that the laundromat is nearby so I wish them the best of luck with the issue and hope I can start coming again if it gets figured out because the food is delicious. I almost want to come with my own container from home so I can keep eating it.
