We’ve had professor pizza multiple times since they opened their Old Town location and have always gone back to it as an easy staple when we don’t want to cook. Unfortunately tonight, when we got home (we live around the corner so it’s less than a 3 minute walk) tonight, our pizza was sitting in grease. We had to wait a few minutes for our order to be ready, so it seemed like it wasn’t sitting for long, it as all. The pizza was extremely soggy – I some pieces even falling apart when picking them up because of how wet they were. We both ate 1.5-2 slices and threw the rest of the pizza away. Disappointed to say the least, probably the last time we’ll order from here.

After some less than stellar volleyball performances, my friends and I were pretty hungry. Professor Pizza absolutely hit the spot. They have several celiac-safe gluten free options that are absolutely delicious. The ordering is completely online and you can easily mark that you have a gluten allergy. I wish I lived closer to the Professor because it’s such a convenient and tasty option.

The weather was cold, the air was crisp, and our stomachs were ravenous after my family’s first annual holiday pickleball tournament. We needed a couple of cold brews and a few good pies to celebrate the rest of the night. Not only did Professor Pizza leave us impressed, but this establishment might have became my new spot for pizza. While the food was amazing, we were also beyond impressed with our waitress who greeted us with a smile and made our night seamless and enjoyable. As an Eastern European food connoisseur new to the Chicago area, I have carefully constructed a rating system that reflects my personal thoughts, feelings, and experience.

Food 10/10

*QUICK SIDE NOTE WHILE ORDERING PIZZA* the cracker crust is amazing, the quickest made, and my top choice. The cracker style is cut into thin squares, like tavern style pizza. The cracker crust has a corn meal covered undercarriage (I think) which was delightful. The cornmeal undercarriage stimulates the tongue as if you swallowed sandpaper on accident, but in the best way possible. Trust me here….
The Grandma Crust is rich and decadent. While it was great, it’s important to note that you can probably only eat one slice of this pizza before feeling full.

Vodka Pizza with Sausage (Cracker Crust) – A very elaborate vodka sauce that explored the depths of creaminess while offering a tanginess that made you wanna snap your fingers. We added sausage to the pie to add some protein. I feel like the sausage was a well needed addition to the thinner pizza, and I would highly recommend it. This was the table favorite.

Mushroom Leek (Cracker Crust) – this was the most unique pizza we ordered and probably my favorite. Concerningly, I think I would eat unlimited slices of this pie if allowed. It has a very rich and creamy mushroom taste but was light and delicate. It has been over a week since I’ve had this pie and I’m still smiling just thinking about it.

Deluxe Pepperoni (Grandma Crust) – This was well done with a perfect flavor profile. The Grandma crust only allowed me to try a little bit of the pie, but what I had was pure gluttony. The cupped pepperoni was plentiful and the whipped ricotta offered complimentary creaminess with whispers of sweet “hellos” I would love to try this on the cracker crust next, so I could eat more of it. This easily could’ve been my favorite.

Drinks 6.8/10

As a beer snob, I would say that the selection of beer was good but not great. Beer is the perfect drink to have with pizza, and I think their selection should be more widespread and diverse. Put more unique lagers and craft IPAs on the menu and the score would be higher.
They carry pepsi products over coke products which is a major point on controversy for many people, but I won’t go down that path in this review.

Atmosphere 9.3/10

It was a great, casual atmosphere that would be perfect for an intimate dinner or a casual hangout spot. I don’t watch much football these days, but it seemed to be a spot that people were coming to watch the Bears. Obviously, the bar scene would be better with a more diverse selection of beers. Regardless, it seemed like the perfect place to watch a game and have a few too many slices of pizza.
Our waitress is what made the atmosphere the go from a 7 to a 9.3. She was kind and very sweet. She explained the menu to us and was patient with us. Everything came out perfectly and she seemed very happy to have us and be there. Everyone in the family made comments about how great she was. Whoever served my family in far back left booth on Saturday, 12/20/25 deserves some recognition.

Likelihood of Return 9.5/10

This is where I will be coming for pizza from now on. Maybe it will just be takeout because the beer selection could be improved, but the dine in experience was phenomenal. The establishment has a great vibe to it and our waitress went above and beyond,

We came on a Sunday evening, and were seated quickly. The place was quiet.

We ordered a cracker crust margherita and a pepperoni deluxe with the NY crust.

Both were absolutely delicious and I want to come back to try others.

The 12” pizza was more like 11”.

One minor issue was the NY crust took 20 more minutes to come out after we got our first pizza. The menu clearly stated the Sicilian and Detroit took much longer, but we assumed the one that was only a *little* thicker would not *take* that long. The waitress Maria who was attentive and very nice explained to us.

So not a mood killer, but were kept in limbo while we waited. If the NY does indeed take 20+ minutes longer, you could update the menu.

I had been looking good forward to checking this place out, but after our experience I will never be back. First off, service was great. The pizza… not so much. We are both Detroit style fans and ordered a large pepperoni Detroit pizza. It came out so burned that it was nearly inedible. We each had one slice and threw the rest out. The cost of 3 drinks, an order of wings, and our inedible pizza was over $130 before tip. Never again.

The pizza was a hit! I really enjoyed it! It wasn’t as big as I expected, but it was very delicious. I checked it out after someone else recommended it, and I’d definitely recommend it too. I’ll be back!

We’ve been to this location before and had great experiences. This time not so much. Staff was very friendly so not an issue with the people working there. Unfortunately the pizza was not of the same quality as it had been previously. The New York style pizza was fine if not a little bland. The Detroit style pizza is normally our favorite – it took almost 90 minutes to arrive, the sauce on top was cold and it just seemed it had been sitting around for a while before we got it. The chopped salad had what seemed like rancid dressing on it so it was not edible. Garlic knots were good as always though. The main dining room has great atmosphere but we ended up in the room to the right and in the back. Super bright lights and hardly anyone in there didn’t have much of a vibe. We might go back but probably won’t go anytime soon.

Was looking for some good Chicago pizza I was disappointed to tell you the truth on professor pizza. The service was good I do think they’re overpriced for what you get here. We ordered the mozzarella onion sticks looks good but it was mid. The thin crossed cheese pizza was pretty good. The other pizza we ordered was not my cup of tea. We ended up leaving three out of the six slices.

Let’s talk about Professor Pizza . This is a gem in old town, highlighted with the Italian flag on the steps leading up to the entrance and a rustic interior, it’s a Chicago destination.

Lively atmosphere, kind wait staff, and food well worth the wait. I had the Pepperoni in Grandma Style, and it was some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. If this isn’t a top 5 pizza place in Chicago, I don’t know what is.

The only gripe for most would be the wait time, but when you get the serving, even on a 12 inch, it’s more than enough. I highly recommend this slice of heaven if you’re in Old Town and craving a new and adventurous pizza feast.

It’s absolutely incredible! We ordered way too much food, it’s pizza, is there any other way? The Detroit style vodka sauce pizza is my personal favorite. I had to fight my 6-year-old for the crust pieces.
The pasta, appetizers, salad, and cracker crust pizza were also amazing.
