The atmosphere felt cold and impersonal. The table setup was extremely basic and had more of a cafeteria feel, with just a single hand sanitizer bottle (ugh) sitting on the table rather than a welcoming restaurant environment and table setup.
We ordered hot tea for me, a soda for my daughter, and started with appetizers; potstickers and fried shrimp. From the beginning, the server seemed rushed and irritated, pushing us to order more even after we said we wanted to start with appetizers. Even my 7 year old daughter said how rude he was and she loves everybody.
We then ordered orange chicken for my daughter. The dish was about $25 with tax and came with a very small bowl of rice. After only three bites, every piece of chicken we tried contained cartilage and bones. I took photos and politely asked to send it back. There was no apology or concern, just an abrupt response asking what else we wanted to order.
Shortly after that, and I mean maybe 2 minutes, the check was dropped rudely on the table while we were still eating the appetizers. When I mentioned we weren’t finished, the server was rude and impatient – he clearly wasn’t checked in.
What concerned me most was when we asked for a pen and paper to play tic-tac-toe, were handed a piece of scratch paper (I’m sure they recycle order papers) containing another customer’s full name, address, and phone number. That is a serious privacy issue, and I took photos of that as well because I’m just wow’d by it all.
The service was less than poor, the food was unacceptable, and the overall experience was disappointing, especially considering the positive memories I had of this restaurant from years ago – it was about 30-40 years ago, but still. I did tell the man, who appeared to be the owner while paying at the front, and he said “oh, it’s just an off night”.
I don’t usually write reviews, but this experience was far enough off that I felt it was necessary. I would not return even if they offered free food for life. So bad and absolute crushing childhood memories from ordering poopoo platters as a little Ventura local.
also I have noticed that the rice does have a weird/taste sometimes like other have mentioned.
Great chicken fried rice! You don’t even need the soy sauce it is so flavorful! Yummy sesame chicken and the egg rolls and spring rolls don’t taste like chemicals! Pepper steak was good. My husband likes the egg foo young. I don’t eat that, but he said it was good too. This is our 3rd time visiting and they have been consistently good and the prices are very affordable in comparison to other places.
Thank you, Peking!
