First, you don’t need to be dressed up. This resturant is far from a “fancy” restaurant which is okay with me. There is no ambiance just a large room with various style of tables and chairs and two salad bar serving units. I think the owners where trying to be a family type restaurant but it felt just like a room full of various tables and chairs and a couple of salad bar type severs units.
Our waitres was very friendly and explained the menu and answered all of our questions. The menu is quite large with many choices and the platters were priced well, or so we thought. We chose the Fried Shrimp Platter which included one side and a one trip to the salad bar. We found our way to the salad bar where there was one empty bowl and one bowl with bread crumbs. With no other bowls in site, I had to search for a wait staff to ask for more bowls. With our bowls in hand we preceded to help ourselves to the salad which consisted of iceberg lettuce, dill pickles, bacon bits, had boiled chopped eggs, bell pepper, shredded cheese, cole slaw, an empty bowl of not sure what it was suppose to be, chopped tomatoes, a couple of other items and a choice of salad dressings. The Ranch Dressing I chose was quite watery. Not an overly amazing choice of items but, it was so-so. We head back to our table to enjoy our salad.
About 5 minutes into our salad, our meal arrived. A plate with a large hot baked potatoes surrounded with a large amount of fried shrimp and two small hush puppies. The food was hot and looked delicious. I could hardly wait to pop a fried shrimp into my mouth. The breading on the first couple of shrimp were crispy and seasoned well. When I bit into the shrimp, it had that snap sound and the freshness of the shrimp melted in my mouth. I thought to my self that this meal was going to be wonderful. As I continued eating the fried shrimp, the next few were not cooked as well as the first few. The breading was muschy and the shrimp lacked the snap I had experienced with my first few shrimp bites and was not cooked as well as my first bites Tried a hush puppy and was so disappointed. The hush puppies had not cooked all the way through and was also mushy. So disappointed.
I am one who doesn’t ask for the waitress to take back my meal and to re-cook my food. It doesn’t help make the food taste any better. If the cook cannot get it right the first time, I doubt they could get it right the second time.
This was my second time to dine at Misty Lou’s (one year ago)but, the first time to dine-in their new location. I will not be dinning there a third time unless the reviews are much improved.
Second visit was for a company Christmas party in a private dining room, which was a must because we played dirty Santa and didn’t want to disturb others. Again, we ordered seafood platters. Service was much faster, but each seafood platter had a different combination of food: 1 or no frog leg instead of two; more shrimp on one plate than the other, no oysters on one plate, and less quantity of everything overall compared to first experience. Also, it wasn’t cooked as well. Seafood is my favorite, and for $17.99 without having to leave Lucedale, it was still a good price for what we received.
Third time: my husband heard that the seafood buffet – which we had not previously known about, and which is not listed in their menu – was the way to go. With our daughter staying the night with a friend, we had a dinner date for ourselves ahead of Valentine’s. The buffet is $21.99, I believe. The selection of seafood on the buffet was great! There was boiled shrimp, seafood stuffing, fried fish (fillets and whole, bone-in), stuffed crab, battered and fried corn cobs, stuffed shrimp?, hush puppies, and I think a couple of other things.
THE SEAFOOD IS DELICIOUS! These guys know what they’re doing with the seafood – breaded and seasoned just right – which is great because it’s their primary fare (others have shared menu images, there are non seafood items listed. I know lots of people don’t care for seafood like my brother and sister-in-law, so they do have something for everyone to enjoy). However, the business as a whole is lacking in many ways: the buffet needs more veggies, and a couple of dessert options, the salad bar options need a complete overhaul, and the wait staff seems very inexperienced. Because seafood is my favorite, I REALLY want to see this place succeed! It is really nice to be able to have a seafood dinner in Lucedale and not have the time and expense of going out of town to eat. I left a request with the waiter last night to have the owner or manager contact me because I don’t want to just blast them for the negative aspects online. We’ll see what comes of it.
