The family staff is warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what they do — you can feel the hospitality the moment you walk in. They create an experience that feels both personal and elevated.
From bold curries to street-style favorites, every bite feels like a local-meets-global culinary journey. It’s an incredible addition to the Asheville food scene and a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Indian flavors done right.
We’ll absolutely be back.
But from what I’ve gathered online, that’s not the case when it comes to their interactions with the previous staff. The new owners claim everyone quit, but according to multiple posts, that happened after hours were slashed, food quality was cut, and micromanagement took over.
It’s honestly sad to see a late-night staple disappear like this. Barrel House was one of the few spots where regulars hung out, where you could get cheap drinks, solid bar food, and a laid-back vibe well past midnight. It mattered to people.
And for anyone checking the Google listing: they took over the old Barrel House page/listing. Those hundreds of 5-star reviews reflect Barrel House, NOT “Saffron India Barrel House.”
I went to Mehfil with a friend for Thanksgiving. We ordered items similar to Saffron and we each had a cocktail. The total for both of us together was just over $50. The bottom line for me is this: Saffron is not an “over the top” resturaunt that merits the added expense. There are plenty of other places to eat tasty, even innovative Indian food for less.
We had the samosas, which were delicious. They were flavorful but not overly spicy, the baby had *almost* 2 samosas by himself. My mother-in-law and I each had the tikka salmon which was just perfect. Sometimes when you go out to eat and get salmon it’s overcooked or dry, this was not. It was moist and flavorful and beautifully cooked. The sauce that came with the salmon was so flavorful too. Even the baby loved the salmon. I can’t wait to eat that salmon again. The bread was also very good, we got 3 different kinds (and ate it all, regular naan, Aloo paratha, & Peshwari Naan). The Peshwari Naan was new for me, and so good! I loved the fruit / nut combo in the naan. My hubby and his dad each had veggie dishes that they said were very good. My mother-in-law loved the rice pudding for dessert. I was too stuffed to eat dessert.
The service was great, our waitress was very attentive.
They are open until 2:30 pm on Friday reopening for dinner at 4:30pm.
We did not realize we’d overstayed (please forgive). They never said a hurrying word. So kind, so gracious and food as wonderful as last time. Got to see their sweet son!
Thank you both!
