Saffron India Barrel House in North Asheville delivers an amazing meal from start to finish. Every dish is packed with authentic flavor, vibrant spices, and beautifully balanced ingredients that truly showcase Indian street food and traditional cuisine at its best.

The family staff is warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what they do — you can feel the hospitality the moment you walk in. They create an experience that feels both personal and elevated.

From bold curries to street-style favorites, every bite feels like a local-meets-global culinary journey. It’s an incredible addition to the Asheville food scene and a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Indian flavors done right.

We’ll absolutely be back.

Amazing food! The platter with three different curries/mains was by far our favorite. Great idea. Everything was very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommend this place – huge plates for the price too. If they keep this up I’ll keep coming back The staff was very friendly and accommodating too.

Our group of four foodies, including one well coached in Indian cuisine, visited for an early afternoon dinner. We were blown away. Our food was superb, presented in a beautiful manner, by incredibly friendly staff. Saffron just went into our top tier of favorite restaurants in Asheville. Reservations suggested for evenings, but not crowded for lunch. They are starting buffets March 6, for buffet afficianados.

Food was great. Only thing I’d change is the option to make the food a little more spicy. It’s more of an American spice than a traditional Indian spice.

RIP Barrel House. I’ve been scouring Reddit and Facebook, and I even spoke with the new owners of what was Barrel House and is now Saffron India Barrel House. I want to preface this by saying the new owners were polite to me, and the food was… okay, but expensive. I would visit other Indian restaurants in the area before this one.

But from what I’ve gathered online, that’s not the case when it comes to their interactions with the previous staff. The new owners claim everyone quit, but according to multiple posts, that happened after hours were slashed, food quality was cut, and micromanagement took over.

It’s honestly sad to see a late-night staple disappear like this. Barrel House was one of the few spots where regulars hung out, where you could get cheap drinks, solid bar food, and a laid-back vibe well past midnight. It mattered to people.

And for anyone checking the Google listing: they took over the old Barrel House page/listing. Those hundreds of 5-star reviews reflect Barrel House, NOT “Saffron India Barrel House.”

Excited to see renovations to the Barrel House. Saffron is clean but still working out the refurbishments. The staff strikes the perfect balance between professional and friendly. The food was good – comparable to Mela or Mehfil for the basic Indian fare. In terms of portion size, no leftovers but I’m fine with that. I went on a Wednesday and ordered an appetizer, an entree, naan, and a beer. All midpriced items, nothing highend. The bill was $50 with a 20% tip. Is that overpriced? Out of line with other similar resturants? Consider this –
I went to Mehfil with a friend for Thanksgiving. We ordered items similar to Saffron and we each had a cocktail. The total for both of us together was just over $50. The bottom line for me is this: Saffron is not an “over the top” resturaunt that merits the added expense. There are plenty of other places to eat tasty, even innovative Indian food for less.

My husband, our almost 14-month-old son, and husband’s parents had an amazing dinner tonight at Saffron India Barrel House.

We had the samosas, which were delicious. They were flavorful but not overly spicy, the baby had *almost* 2 samosas by himself. My mother-in-law and I each had the tikka salmon which was just perfect. Sometimes when you go out to eat and get salmon it’s overcooked or dry, this was not. It was moist and flavorful and beautifully cooked. The sauce that came with the salmon was so flavorful too. Even the baby loved the salmon. I can’t wait to eat that salmon again. The bread was also very good, we got 3 different kinds (and ate it all, regular naan, Aloo paratha, & Peshwari Naan). The Peshwari Naan was new for me, and so good! I loved the fruit / nut combo in the naan. My hubby and his dad each had veggie dishes that they said were very good. My mother-in-law loved the rice pudding for dessert. I was too stuffed to eat dessert.

The service was great, our waitress was very attentive.

Tried this cozy little diner for the first time and was blown away! It’s open late, which was perfect for a late-night bite. The place has a unique charm—nothing fancy, but full of character. I had perogies for the first time and they were absolutely delicious—crispy on the outside, soft and savory inside. Definitely a memorable first! I’ll be back for more.

A wonderful late lunch so enjoyed by all of us. We wanted to bring my sister as we had raved about ou last lunch there.
They are open until 2:30 pm on Friday reopening for dinner at 4:30pm.
We did not realize we’d overstayed (please forgive). They never said a hurrying word. So kind, so gracious and food as wonderful as last time. Got to see their sweet son!
Thank you both!

I love the explosion of Indian options we have had in Asheville and Saffron is a great addition! I had the Chicken Xacuti, which was a new dish to me. Love thr combination of flavors. My wife enjoyed her Veggie Tikka. We also shared some garlic naan, samosas, and veg pakora. All enjoyable. Ordered by phone because their online menu didn’t seem to include all their offerings. I hope to try dining in some time as our kids’ activities take us up that way pretty regularly.
