Tequanna’s Soul food & Sweets

I’m giving Tequanna’s a 4 star review with reservations. The 4 stars are given based on my interaction with Tequanna, not the food.

I pulled up at 6:35pm on a Tuesday and the restaurant looked liked it was about to close. It was. I guess Torrington has some rule about their downtown area that affects hours of operation. I hope this changes in the future.

Instead of ordering a little bit of everything like I normally would, I was limited to what was still available. Luckily for me, what was available was delicious. The pictures don’t do the food justice. We got it in a to go container, which just doesn’t present well. Again, it was delicious!

That’s all I can really say. I will be coming back soon to try more of the menu.

reallllllyyyy bad ): they didn’t have coconut bread with their beef patties but they were mushy inside and were giving microwaved. My girl got the jerk chicken i think and mac and cheese it was really nasty barely any cheese on the mac just a lot of seasoning. Root beer was the only good thing!

Nice greeting and outgoing young lady to welcome us.
However, we ordered the BBQ ribs with sides. The yams were cold, the ribs were not only lukewarm but tasteless and tough, not a hint of BBQ sauce. The only good thing was the collards greens.
Definitely never going back.

My wife and I tried Tequanas Soul Food for lunch. We opened the bag to eat it as soon as we got to the car. The baked chicken looked boiled like yesterdays food. It was very cold and had no flavor. The collards were canned I’m pretty sure and those were cold too. They were not fresh collard greens at all. I’m pretty sure the yams were canned as well. She did add some pineapples to the yams and some pork to the collard greens but it did not help. The Mac and cheese wasn’t all that great either. This is not soul food! My stomach hurts just remembering eating from there. I’m black I know how to cook some good soul food. I was just out and wanted to grab a quick home cooked meal but probably should’ve just waited and cooked myself. She was very friendly though.

This place is a true gem and represents everything good about flavorful comfort and soul food. I highly recommend the jerk chicken, rice/peas, and the banana pudding. I’ve eaten at many places with similar cuisine since it’s a favorite but this place rises above even some of the more well known places I’ve been to in big cities including NYC. It’s easy to mess up cornbread (dry, flavorless, etc) but they even nailed that. Try them and see for yourself

I was craving some fried chicken and decided to give this place a try. They didn’t have fried chicken so I ordered the baked chicken and it looked boiled and was pretty tasteless even after adding some hot sauce. The mac and cheese was the worse. Cold and flavorless. The sweet potatoes were okay, but extremely sweet. Overall, I won’t be going back.

I got fried chicken, sweet potatoes, and mac and cheese. The sweet potato came up with melted marshmallows on top, everything was hot and made fresh to order. Mac and cheese was definitely real macaroni with melted cheddar cheese. I only found this spot because is the maps app or I would have never known it was there because it’s hidden in the cut. Regardless, there was ppl there and the young woman who attended me and my daughter was super sweet. She also serves “adult” beverages and has a slushie machine. I posted the pics that say she also holds events at her place and has karaoke night. Might be worth checking out for people who like that. Also, my entire plate was $11. Can’t beat that! She also makes awesome cakes and sweets definitely worth checking those out

Hidden Gem! Drove by like 50x was hungry today so my friend and I stopped. Was actually really good. Sick of all the ordinary New England deli food. This is a place to get a nice filling meal for an insanely great price do not hesitate to try anything….especially jungle juice, BBQ chicken and yams!

Soggy Pancake

Been here several times and each time the food has been good at best more so for the price, however this last time was a huge let down and I probably won’t be going back. The owner never smiles and isn’t personable at all. She never seems like she’s in a good mood and this is every time I’ve ever gone. Today the bbq chicken looked like it was from a school cafeteria. Cold and with a minuscule amount of bbq sauce on it. It’s not even cooked in it from what it looks like, it looks like boiled chicken with bbq sauce put on after the fact. Next the macaroni salad was hands down one of the worst thing I’ve ever eaten before. Took one bite right in the trash. The sweet potato’s looked like they came from a can and the macaroni & cheese was days old. The only edible thing was the banana pudding which was warm…its supposed to be cold. For $20 I’ll go elsewhere. Started off strong and now it’s going down hill
