We visited Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya in Kirkland on the second or third day of their soft opening. It was my mom’s very first experience at a Japanese café, and she really enjoyed it, which made it extra special for us.

To keep it simple, we ordered traditional ramen — and it was a great choice. Everything looked perfect and beautifully presented. The atmosphere felt fresh and welcoming.

The service was excellent — attentive, friendly, and professional, especially impressive during a soft opening.

Congratulations on the opening! Wishing you lots of success — we’ll definitely be back.

New place! So excited. Unfortunately we didn’t really enjoy the food that much but service was nice and the vibe was good. Maybe because they’re new they’re working out some things (despite it being a chain).

We got the cold tofu app, Tanaka classic and tonkotsu curry ramen. We added the suggested Parmesan to the classic. The tonkotsu curry base tastes pretty good but the tonkotsu meat was rubbery and inedible. Would not recommend. Please change that or get rid of it. The Parmesan also congealed and he had to eat soggy lumps of it in the broth.

Cold tofu was the best thing.

The transitional Ramen is really good. It tastes very strong garlic as well. The Appetizer is good such as ika geso karate, fried oyster and gyoza. The service is amazing as well. The waiter is very nice. Definitely will come back again. One thing is the price is kind of pricey but I understand it. The store is located at the new building with valid parking as well. So what can i complain

Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya has an interesting background where a Chinese American (presumably, with last name Wang) from Hawaii, studied Japanese ramen in Japan, opens ramen restaurants in Illinois, Hawaii, Texas, and now Washington. I appreciate her passion and remind me of the movie ‘Ramen Girl’. Lol. Anyway, this location replaces the sadly closed Island Soul (RIP, miss you). The inside has dark themed décor with a full bar and ramen bowls along the top, somewhat cute and slightly elevated at the same time. Their menu is ambitious with izakaya items, ramen dishes, rice dishes, and more, some with a Hawaiian flair. This location has WA only menu items, many of which focus on seafood. They have a kale ramen as a substitute for gluten free and available in vegan/vegetarian ramens. During this one visit, we ordered six dishes, guessing not everything will be stellar. The ramens are both winners; the appetizers are a mix bag. Tanaka is worth trying, and we will likely return. Our server is a sweet lady newly arrived in WA. The food arrived swiftly.

The Food:
Classic Tanaka Ramen, $17.99 – 4.5 Stars
The classic ramen is amongst the lower cost. Creamy tonkatsu creamy bone broth, not too salty, comes with two thinner cuts of cha sui and a whole egg. This is a good entry point for their ramen dishes.
Side note: They have options of spiciness that increases in cost. Those chiles must be expensive…

Ahi and Hamachi Tartare, $17.99 – 4 Stars
Very pretty and well-presented dish. The photo in the menu sold me this dish. Fish protein and avocado – yes, please! The fish is simply seasoned similar to poke. The menu says chips are taro, which is a favorite of mine. My serving was unfortunately crowded out by beet dyed sweet potato chips. They are not house-made and not Hawaiian thin. If I were to bet, they are Terra chips. Kinda disappointed since I asked if the chips were house-made.

Pork Bun, $6.99 – 4 Stars
If one knows the Taiwanese Pork Bao, theirs is a simplified version of it with less pizzazz, simply decorated with Kewpie mayo (or a variant of it). Hubby gave it a passing grade anyway because of the thick slab of meat.

Soft Shell Crab Bun, $8.99 – 1.5 Star
This is a fail. My pet peeve with fried soft-shell crabs are ones that are not crispy. They become chewy when not crispy, which is the case with this one. If the restaurant is reading this, try double-frying.

Fried Oysters, $10.99 – 3 Stars
These are normal breaded and fried oysters. Not a standout in terms of flavor, plumpness, or crispiness.

Spicy Creamy Vegan Ramen, $17.99 – 4.5 Stars
I wanted to try their vegan ramen which has kale noodles. Knowing I wouldn’t be able to finish, I ordered it to go and tried a bit at the restaurant. The noodles have an excellent texture and chew, a worthy substitute to regular ramen. The broth tasted good, too.

The service was so good. All of the staff was phenomenal! (Which can be hard to find in Seattle area) Ramen was fabulous, it brought me right back to Japan. We’ll definitely be back.

Been here multiple times and it’s consistently solid. The Tanaka Garlic Volcano ramen is seriously addictive, I end up getting it every visit.

The environment and overall vibe are excellent. You can really tell the team put a lot of care into the details. The interior is cozy and thoughtfully designed, and even the plates are custom and well crafted.

Honestly, before Tanaka opened, I didn’t feel like there was a ramen place I was truly excited to go to. Now Tanaka has become my go-to ramen spot and makes choosing where to eat so much easier. Definitely worth a visit!

Grand atmosphere along with amazing food and customer service, you can’t go wrong! The ramen has a lot of flavor and the pricing is on par with comparable ramen restaurants in the vicinity. David was a great help and very enthusiastic energy.

Amazing ramen: love the noodle, the meat and most of all the broth is just right. I was a bit skeptical at first because of some creative broth options, but it is by far the best ramen broth I’ve had in a while on the east side. Staff were very friendly and attentive, especially Edwin. No wait and fast service, and hopefully it stays that way .

Finally a ramen place in Kirkland! I love that the menu had a ton of variety. The atmosphere is great, clean and trendy with good music and great service. Our only complaint was that the pork was more on the fatty side in the ramen where we prefer it to be more lean and charred. The chicken katsu curry was sooo good and the gyoza. Highly recommend!
