Frankie’s BBQ: Southwest Harbor’s Unassuming Temple to the Art and Science of Smoke

Tucked away in Southwest Harbor, Maine, Frankie’s BBQ is not your average roadside smokehouse. It’s the passion project of a one-man culinary orchestra, a retired molecular biologist turned pitmaster, whose quest for perfection has transformed barbecue into both an art form and a science.

My wife, relatives, and I have been making pilgrimages to Frankie’s for three summers now, ever since stumbling upon it in 2023. That first bite was a revelation. The food is, quite simply, outstanding: tender, smoky, and layered with flavor in a way that speaks to meticulous technique and uncompromising standards.

But the real treasure, if you have the time, is Frankie himself. Ask him about barbecue, and you’ll find yourself drawn into a captivating conversation that ranges from the delicate nuances of smoke control to the biochemical reactions that make great BBQ possible. His knowledge is encyclopedic, his enthusiasm infectious. You leave not only well-fed but inspired to fire up your own grill and see if you can match even a fraction of his mastery.

A word to the wise: Frankie’s is not the place for menu tinkering or substitutions. This is barbecue as its maker intends it, crafted with precision and offered without compromise. To alter his work would be like asking Leonardo to repaint the Mona Lisa or Vivaldi to rewrite The Four Seasons. Trust the man, and order what’s offered on the menu.

The setting is open-air and refreshingly unfussy: no frills, no distractions, just expertly made barbecue served with a side of authenticity. In a world of overcomplicated dining experiences, Frankie’s BBQ is a rare and wonderful reminder that the art or the smoke, when done with skill and soul, is more than enough.

Bravo, Frankie. Long may the smoke rise.
And please don’t retire in two years.

From the road we were intrigued so we pulled a u/turn to check it out. First impression, Frankie knows his BBQ. You can see he’s got a passion for bringing good food to people. The ribs were wonderful, falling off the bone and such a great flavor. The special rib sauce was unique and tasty. No knife necessary! The beans were another unique taste. So many flavors I couldn’t even begin to describe. Burt ends 10/10 and the brisket was smoked to perfection. Thank you so much for a delicious lunch for these Texans !

Absolutely the best you will ever have anywhere at any price.
The Brisket is legendary / he also smokes salmon in three different flavors and equally as amazing.
If you are anywhere near his location make the trip / you will be blown away

Some people come to Acadia for the majestic views and world-renowned hiking, but the true treat is this little stop of culinary heaven in Southwest Harbor. Our family has made a point to hit Frankie’s as much as possible whenever we visit. Frank’s food is better than what we have in Boston; his brisket leads the pack; that perfect balance of his special recipe flavor (his wife doesn’t even know). His BBQ beans are my personal favorite, and he’s now sporting a delicious Mac and Cheese as well. His food mimics the Leonard Skynard music playing in the background; timeless and very southern, a treat you didn’t expect that first time you took a bite. Great guy, stop on by!

Came to play mini golf, stayed to eat BBQ in Maine of all places!

Seriously though, when you pull up to a mini golf place, and are so drawn to something just by the unbelievable and amazing smoker smell, you know it’s going to be good. The owner was just in his little shed and greeted us as we walked up … “All I got left is ribs and brisket…” Ok then, brisket is it. He opens the smoker and the billowing waft of BBQ amazingness hits you in the face. It was so good we didn’t even get a photo and pretty much finished it by the time we got to the mini golf window. My one regret is I didn’t get to try the burnt ends – they must be magical.

Do yourself a favor and skip one lobster roll and get some BBQ before mini golf.

Loved it, stopped by on the way back to the camp site. Frankie loves to bbq and it shows. Loved the brisket and ribs. If we had been there earlier we would have asked for the burnt ends, but he was already out.

Great BBQ! We had food for 25 people. It was so delicious. The brisket was insane and tender and the pork melts in your mouth. The Mac and cheese and beans are to die for. The side sauces can’t be beat! If you drive by turn around! Totally worth a visit.

Had the pulled pork – it was outstanding! This isn’t your average new england bbq – this is the real deal and can compete with the REAL stuff you get down south! I highly recommend. It; best of all, Frankie’s personality is the best and makes the visit and experience totally worth it. If you don’t stop, you’re missing out!

We stopped for lunch as Frankie’s and it was terrific. Frank was such a joy to talk with. He is passionate about his BBQ! We had the pulled pork, brisket, and burnt ends. All were smoky and delicious. Franks sauce was so good as a compliment. Sitting outside on the picnic tables, enjoying the day with great barbecue, with an owner/chef who is passionate about his product … what could be better? Closed on Thursday but make sure you visit Frankie’s for lunch some other day. You’ll love it.
