We ordered the “Fondue Bourguignonne.” What arrived bore no resemblance to the classic dish. Instead of hot oil suitable for properly cooking beef, we were given a barely simmering beef broth over an underpowered burner. There was steam, but no real boil — making it impossible to cook the thinly sliced raw beef beyond a painfully slow poach. Pre-cooked shrimp and chicken were included (inexplicably), along with mushrooms and halved new potatoes. The execution was incoherent.
Service structure was equally lacking: plastic ramekins of mayonnaise-based sauces, no individual plates initially, and minimal utensils. This wasn’t rustic charm — it was poor planning.
To their credit, the chalet-style space is beautiful: airy, exposed beams, warm alpine atmosphere. The staff was kind, accommodating, and ultimately apologetic. I told our server plainly, “This is not good, and I am not paying for it.” They understood.
At best, it was a strange and curious culinary experiment. At worst, it was a complete failure of concept and execution. The only redeeming aspect was that the cascading missteps became unintentionally amusing.
If you’re going to do fondue, commit to the physics and the tradition. Otherwise, don’t do it at all. Our advise is to avoid the Swiss Fondue pop-up until such time that the venue is able to pull off the concept with actual representative cuisine.
That said, the other food items we ordered were good and enjoyable, so it seems this was more of a one-off mistake than the norm. When I called to let them know, the staff were extremely polite and immediately refunded me — no hassle, no request for proof, just excellent customer service.
Mistakes can happen, but how a place responds makes a big difference. Because of their service (and the fact that the rest of the food was tasty), I’d be open to giving them another try in the future.
To be fair, Saja our server was amazing. The problems at this restaurant are systemic kitchen and management issues.
– the menu feels designed for convenience, not quality—likely to accommodate a small (repurposed) ski-lodge kitchen.
– that said, kitchen limitations aren’t an excuse; there are plenty of ways to execute a menu well.
– proteins should be cooked to order, not pre-cooked and reheated.
– well thought out dishes with better execution would allow for fresher preparation and better consistency.
– with proper execution, this food could be dramatically better without major changes to the space.
terrible this place is. We had a 7:30 reservation and stayed there for 2 hours while having our orders done wrong, the food taking literally forever, but our waitress was very nice and was very sorry. That’s the only good thing. The food was also horrendous. I mean I rather survive 10 days in Alaska with minimal clothing than eat that garbage again. We ordered nachos at 7:40 and they came out at 8:45 with just a little queso sauce on top. Only enough for 5 chips. And the ambiance here is nice with the mountain and the scenery, but terrible with every other topic. If one place in this world should be gone for good it should Alta Vida. Suggestion: if you go to camelback resort do not go to there restaurants on site. They overprice every item and the quality is terrible. For example, a bottle of water in the hotel costs four dollars. In conclusion, Alta Vida is a terrible place to be at and don’t go there.
