⭐️⭐️⭐️ Decent atmosphere, but food didn’t quite deliver — not likely to return

Ambler Café and Bistro sits on 181 Point Chevalier Road, tucked into the quiet suburb of Pt Chev — a relatively isolated part of Tāmaki Makaurau. It’s not the kind of area you wander into by accident; you come here with purpose. After considering a few nearby cafés, we decided to give Ambler a try.

First impressions were positive. The interior is cosy and well-decorated, with a warm, inviting feel that suits the local vibe. It’s clearly designed to be a comfortable spot for locals to relax, and the customer service was friendly and attentive throughout our visit.

Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations. The Wagyu beef burger was underwhelming — it didn’t taste like Wagyu at all, and the portion size was surprisingly small. The bun was smaller than a cheeseburger from McDonald’s, and the fries that came with it were minimal. I left feeling unsatisfied, which isn’t what you want after ordering a premium burger.

The Croque Monsieur was also disappointing. The bread was extremely oily, and the overall taste was dominated by salt and cheese in a way that felt unbalanced. The combination just didn’t work — it wasn’t enjoyable, and certainly not something I’d order again.

On the practical side, the toilet is located outside — turn right after exiting the café. It’s a minor detail, but worth noting.

Overall, Ambler Café and Bistro earns a 3-star rating from me. The atmosphere and service are solid, but the food quality and portion sizes didn’t justify the price. With other options nearby, we’ll be choosing elsewhere next time.

The fish and chips and dessert were really good.
Fish and chips in New Zealand can be hit or miss, but this place makes them delicious.(perfectly crispy and full of flavo)

Ambler is an absolute gem. The food was delicious, the drinks were beautifully made, and the service was genuinely warm and attentive. What really stood out was how toddler friendly the space is, with tasty options for little ones and thoughtful touches like colouring pencils to keep them happy. A relaxed, welcoming spot that still delivers on quality. We will definitely be back.

Ampler Cafe is a hidden gem that truly delivers on aesthetics, taste, and ambiance. The beautifully presented charcuterie board was a highlight, featuring a well-balanced selection of cheeses, cured meats, pickles, and condiments. The grilled bread had the perfect crunch, complementing the creamy and tangy flavors on the board.

The coffee was not just delicious but also artfully crafted, with stunning latte art that added to the experience. The warm, inviting atmosphere and attention to detail make Ampler Cafe a must-visit for brunch lovers. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a well-curated café experience with top-notch presentation and flavors!

Impeccable! Simple dishes with explosion of flavours. Fish of the day with exquisite sauce. But the highlight is the chocolate and caramel mousse. PERFECT texture and flavour! Added to the top of my list of best desserts ever! Try it! You’ll thank me!

This was my first time here and I was impressed. They were one of the only places open in Pt Chev on the public holiday. The service by the staff was excellent and the food was perfect. I’ve already recommended Ambler to a few people. I’m looking forward to going back.

Thought we’d try Ambler again and was very impressed.

While I enjoyed my usual meal, my friend ordered a tuna dish (pictured) that was disappointing.
The tuna was cut too thickly and difficult to cut, borderline inedible.
The potatoes were dead cold and there was also no dressing.
We received a discount which was appreciated but still a waste of a meal that could have been amazing.
Rookie error on the chefs behalf.

Great coffee, food and friendly staff.

After a refurbishment and challenging times due to never ending road works, Ambler reopened recently, much to the delight of the neighbourhood. Dishes have never disappointed whenever we’ve been, and we’ve gone through the whole menu, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chefs know their flavours, cook time and combinations. Yum, yum, and yum!

Good service. Good menu.
Sadly, the burger patty was so raw it was inedible. They were suitably apologetic which I appreciated, and didn’t charge me for it, but a disappointment nonetheless.
We had fond memories of Ambler, but will not return.

Best place to eat in Point Chevalier!! Ambler has everything you need: great coffee (they use the Supreme coffee beans), a good selection of pastries for breakfast, and amazing food for lunch and dinner. The gnocchi is a must-try!
They also have a sunny terrace, which is great for having some drinks during the happy hour with friends. The kitchen is kind of an open kitchen, so you can have a view while they prepare your food, and the staff is really friendly (some of them French so you can also enjoy a French experience).
I became a fan of this place thank you guys for making every visit an amazing food experience! Will def come back
