Was passing by and decided to try. It was a Saturday evening, the place was pretty busy. I ordered things I know from other Japanese places – Miso soup, whatever rice thing with beef and with chicken curry. I got miso soup really quick but it was barely warm and very salty so I threw the half of it into the trash.
After like 15 mins – because they forgot about my order – I finally got my two rice small balls with fillings. It was like 80% of rice mixed with 20% of the protein – not a balanced ration. Rice was bland, the amount of protein was not enough at all and the taste was not memorable at all. One and done and will never come back

Made to order omusubi?!?

We were still a bit hungry after a near by lunch and saw everyone walking around the street with fresh omusubi, so it was decided we had to drop in!

This quaint little shop is packing a big punch with made to order omisubi and boba drinks. We had such a hard time deciding which to try, as they all looked good, but landed on the pork belly, spicy tuna, and a boba ice tea.

Wow!! The rice was perfectly warm and the seaweed was so fresh and crunchy. The toppings brought in so much flavor as well, making each omusubi unique. You could feel the love.

Definitely will be stopping by this location more this summer, as this was the perfect light bite and their tea was hitting just right.

Sunny Blue is a casual Japanese restaurant in Santa Monica, California, specializing in OMUSUBI (Japanese rice balls). This restaurant, located just a few streets away from Santa Monica Beach, is always bustling with young Americans.

They offer 15 different varieties of OMUSUBI and sides, including Yuzu Pork Belly, Smoked Salmon Roll, and Udon.

While they all have a Japanese influence, the quality doesn’t quite match authentic Japanese standards. However, the variety of toppings and the convenient style of omusubi seem to be popular in the US as well.

Okay, this may have been one of my favorite food experiences lately! If you like sushi then you should give this a try for sure. The salmon was perfection and the curry was amazing! Such a fun place, will be back if we get the chance.

Such a quaint shop, everything has cute decorations too. The food is simple, no-frills, but unbeatable quality! Great variety considering that they pretty much just serve omosubi, and i was blown away by every flavor. Don’t walk too fast by this little shop, you don’t want to miss out.

We expected California to have good options for Japanese food, so we were very excited when we found this place since we were planning to visit Santa Monica. Glad we could come try Japanese-style omusubi (rice balls; different regions may call it “onigiri”). Got Mentaiko (spicy cod roe), Ebi Mayo (shrimp), Spicy Salmon, and Tuna Mayo. All the filling was flavorful and delicious. Server was friendly and helpful explaining about the omusubi. Because there was no indoor seating available, we ordered it to-go, but on second thought, we decided to eat there, finding a few stools outside to put the food on– which was a good choice because the food was fresh and delicious. I heard this kind of place with handcrafted omusubi is popular in Japan so I hope we see more of place like Sunny Blue in the US too.

Wanted a quick snack before heading back home and we were hungry but not starving ! Found this spot in Santa Monica . The service was great . No where to really sit or stand inside . We ordered four different flavors . They ran out of the mushroom unfortunately, but we had two different tuna’s , the salmon and the eggplant . The tuna mayo was our favorite the rest weren’t bad !nice snack place Its decent for what it is and simple .

My friend took me to the cutest musubi shop after our Pilates class! I asked the guy working there and who was Japanese which one he recommended and I ended up trying the miso beef and the curry pork musubi. Both were so delicious and of course I saw the lychee oolong boba tea so I had to try that too. The staff are super friendly service was quick and the food was yummy! I’m definitely recommending this spot to more people and can’t wait to come back!

I used to come to Sunny Blue because it seemed like a great low-waste option: omusubi in a paper tray, no utensils needed. But today I saw they actually use multiple layers of plastic wrap in prep: one to ball up the rice, toss it, then another to wrap the fillings before tossing that too.

That’s a lot of plastic waste for something marketed as traditional and hand-made. I won’t be eating here again unless they change that process. It’s a bummer, because it could easily be a truly sustainable spot.
