Very hit and miss…
Was in the area for a work trip, love trying local places when I travel. Came in a little before 7PM on a Wednesday evening, got seated fairly quickly… no issue there. Kind of dark inside, but the setup and decor were nice. My server was amazing, and the vibe from the staff as a whole was upbeat. Beer selection was good and I enjoyed my choices. I was relaxing a bit and snacking on my Appetizer, so I was in there about 15 minutes before I ordered my meal. I ordered the flat iron steak special, and it was the most disappointing part of the experience. Either it was one of the toughest steaks ever cooked, or I was given the dullest knife ever made. Flavor was fine, but it wasn’t really enjoyable and I left most of it. The appetizer and sides were good, but the steak was disappointing. Like I said, some highs and lows, if I’m ever in the area again I’ll give it another shot… but not the steak.

The Liberal Cup is a lively spot in Hallowell known for good pub food and a bustling atmosphere. The live music brings great energy, but it can get much too loud for a relaxing meal if you prefer quieter settings. The food was tasty, but service left a bit to be desired, it was just okay and not as attentive as I would have liked. If you’re looking for a happening place with music and energetic vibes, this is worth a try, but be prepared for the volume.

Wow this place is so good. We had a waiter named conner and he must be a culinary wizard with the chefs and cooks. His recommendations on all were so great. He also was a good waiter. Would recommend this place totally worth it. We had fish and chips and the fish was so big. Many photos for scale and the haddock Napoleon makes you want to sell your car and eat here for a year.

We had a reservation for six of us at 6p and, although they weren’t able to seat us until 6:20p, they made up for this with excellent food and drinks, amazing service, and speedy food delivery (we had a 7:30p play reservation across the street). Our waitress was nothing short of top notch. We enjoy this restaurant so much – could be our new favorite place!

Appearance wise walking in its a pretty big building. Looking from the outside it would seem much smaller but actually going inside is clearly much bigger. There is plenty of seating, one section then another section near the bar, including the bar itself then outside seating. It’s big enough so I imagine it’s wheelchair accessible as well. The establishment is very maintained and clean, including the bathroom. I think the sink is nice decor, it’s almost like a small waterfall sink. Kinda cute. The bathroom is very small but clean. The decor for the rest of the building could use more work but I did think the little area for the dart board was neat, maybe a pool table in the future would be a neat concept too. Just a suggestion. They have a full bar, they are a brewery, has two tv’s in the bar, plenty of drink options. They have a very small gift shop near the entrance. Hats, shirts, etc. Parking is street parking but there’s a small lot next door you can park at. Free parking. They accept debit/credit and cash. They have a pretty big food menu as well as a vegetarian menu. They also have a dessert menu. They make their own beer and you can purchase a shot sized sampler that has seven drinks to try. The portion sizes for the menu is very generous and the prices aren’t bad. I feel like they may be understaffed because there was only one waitress on for lunch. Kids will like this place as well because there’s burgers, fries and such on the menu. They are not open for breakfast but open for lunch and dinner.

Tina was our waitress and she could be a very good sales person. She knew the menu exceptionally well, never had a negative thing to say about any of the food, she made sure we always had our drinks, was kind and had good customer service. My husband had the fish and chips and he had the steak and cheese egg rolls. Not much steak or cheese in the egg rolls but they were good. Horse radish is gross, not sure how people like that but to each their own. He wasn’t a fan of the haddock because he’s use to cod instead, but personal preference. He says the coleslaw was dry but he liked the fries. I had the beer and cheese soup and the thanksgiving meal. I absolutely loved my meal. The cheese soup you definitely could taste the beer, I thought that added really good flavor. The thanksgiving meal is your basic thanksgiving meal, but was great. The potatoes are yummy, good flavor. The butternut squash was the best thing on the plate. No complaints at all for my meal. Very big portions. Next time I would like to try either the shepherds pie or meatloaf. The prices are definitely reasonable for the amount of food you get. They had no mountain dew. Food coming out was very slow but when you only have one waitress on that shift it kinda makes sense. That’s not her fault. Just because I’m giving it a three star dosent mean I didn’t like it, delivery time took way too long, but the food was good and the service was excellent. Maybe consider having a hostess help out the wait staff or put a second person on to help them. Thank you Tina for your awesome service. We hope to see you again!

Overall, 3 stars! <3

The place is very sectioned off and dark inside. Table was sticky but I think it is just from the finishing coming off, makes it feel dirty though when you have to peel the wooden flight holder off of it to move it and spill the beer. The server was friendly.
The flight is a good deal 7 samples for 7.50. Beer is OK. I like probably 3 of the 7 for my tastes.
The spinach dip is good. Like the bread and chips they provide for it. Onion rings are good too but a tad too much seasoning salt.
The closed off atmosphere and sticky tables are enough to make me skip it next time
Update
Went again well this is the third time. Food is consistently good. But could definitely use a good cleaning.

Excellent, so glad we stopped.

Delicious food, large servings, great atmosphere/vibe, and sweet staff.
If you follow me, you can probably tell that my southern taste buds are suffering in New England. Not here!! All the flavor of any good grandma’s kitchen… And my goodness at these decadent dessert. Mmmm.

10/10, highly recommend.

UPDATE:

Great food! Love the Summer Wheat. Pot roast was excellent, as were the beer battered clams and the small portion Fish & Chips! Excellent. Thank you!

This place has a consistent beer selection, the food is always good and the prices are great. We stop in here every trip to Maine. The pot roast is awesome.

The food was decent, the best part was the $7.50 flight you get of all 7 of their beers on tap. I didn’t love all the beers but I enjoyed having the option to try them all for a low price. The server was helpful even though I was full of questions. It was chill for a restaurant setting.

Seems like a local favorite… Very lively around the bar, with people dancing to the live music.
