The cafe is just as you enter Alexandria, IN from the south. The atmosphere is very rural and local. The customers seem mostly to be locals. When we visited on a Friday lunchtime, the place was pretty packed.

The portions were sizeable, delicious and reasonably priced. I had breaded pollock with green beans and homemade cottage cheese. My mother had beef and noodles with mash potatoes and corn. I was quite satisfied with the food. Regrettably, the coffee was lukewarm and weak. It was the only negative point in an overall good meal.

On the downside, the service was not friendly. It seemed like they were very friendly to regular, local customers but quite cold to newcomers like us. Also, the bathrooms are best avoided, if possible.

Still, the food was good enough to make it worth a visit in my opinion.

Pro Tip: The cafe closes at 2PM (kind of slows down after 1PM) so don’t get there too late!

THE PIES! are amazing!

Get in early for the best selection of hand made pies!

I go there often to use the WiFi, sip a coffee and have a slice of delicious pie.

The staff are friendly, helpful, and always accommodating.

The selection on the menu is amazing, try the sampler!

My wife and I were passing through town, and on impulse stopped in. They were fairly busy at the end of a lunch hour, full of locals. We were promptly greeted, and given menus. I chose the tenderloin and onion rings, she had the beef and noodles, with a side salad. My tenderloin was moist and tasty, not pounded paper thin. The onion rings were most excellent, crispy batter with tender well-cooked onion within. Great flavor, I could eat a large plate of them with no guilt! My wife let me sample her beef & noodles, and it was a pleasant surprise to find real beef (not just chopped little bits) in it. Very tender and flavorful, not too salty either. I stole some of her mashed potatoes, too. 🙂 I wish I’d saved room for dessert, as I later got a look at the offerings in the dessert case. Our waitress was friendly and came by often to check on us.

Rachel’s isn’t anywhere on a direct path to where we usually go on our travels, but I’m willing to make it a destination next time. I’d give them 5 stars, but I need to try more from the menu.

Standard fare breakfast food in a typical diner setting. Not many in restaurant at the time. Waitress promptly took our order. Food was prepared quickly. Tasted like homemade. Prices reasonable for portions.

Rachel’s presents exactly what you would expect. It’s a cozy small town Cafe with good food at a good price. A friend asked me to pick him up at a dealership that he was dropping his car at. He wanted to take me out to breakfast and asked about Rachel’s Cafe. I said Yes please! He wasn’t disappointed and stated he would be back. I know I will!

I’ve driven by numerous times going from Anderson to Marion (and back), finally stopped in on a Saturday in the early afternoon. It wasn’t too busy, we found an open booth and were quickly given menus.
I had two eggs overeasy, hash browns, and toast with a cup of coffee. Eggs were good. Hash browns were a little dry or something – they were an interesting texture. Toast was regular white bread. Coffee was good diner coffee. My boyfriend had a sandwich with french fries. The fry I stole was nice and hot.
Service was good, quick, no lingering. Interior was home-y. Prices were good, reasonable.

On our first visit we were warmly greeted & sat in this small town Indiana down home restaurant where locals love to gather.

Upon 1st glance, I noticed the specials which started the drooling. A fried bologna sandwich! Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it! It’s the quintessential after school treat of the 70’s latch key kids!

The pies are tasty but it was the carrot cake that stole my heart! Perfectly moist & yummy cream cheese icing!

The highway burger was my choice, it was a BIG & very tasty sandwich. Way too much food for me, but I had dinner for the next day! My hubby had the beef & noodles (skinny noodles for those who are noodles snobs). He enjoyed the generous helping with mashed taters. He said they were very good!

When were back in Alexandria, it will be a sure stop for these two Midwesterner’s!

The food was great, lots of homemade desserts. The service in all honesty was less than exemplary, but they did get the food out quickly.

This was our first there. After waiting about 20 minutes for our food the waitress came to the table and said they lost our order so we waited another 25 minutes for our order never even got an I’m sorry never go back again
