Breakfast – Rachel’s Hi-Way Café
Reviews
The portions were sizeable, delicious and reasonably priced. I had breaded pollock with green beans and homemade cottage cheese. My mother had beef and noodles with mash potatoes and corn. I was quite satisfied with the food. Regrettably, the coffee was lukewarm and weak. It was the only negative point in an overall good meal.
On the downside, the service was not friendly. It seemed like they were very friendly to regular, local customers but quite cold to newcomers like us. Also, the bathrooms are best avoided, if possible.
Still, the food was good enough to make it worth a visit in my opinion.
Pro Tip: The cafe closes at 2PM (kind of slows down after 1PM) so don’t get there too late!
Get in early for the best selection of hand made pies!
I go there often to use the WiFi, sip a coffee and have a slice of delicious pie.
The staff are friendly, helpful, and always accommodating.
The selection on the menu is amazing, try the sampler!
Rachel’s isn’t anywhere on a direct path to where we usually go on our travels, but I’m willing to make it a destination next time. I’d give them 5 stars, but I need to try more from the menu.
I had two eggs overeasy, hash browns, and toast with a cup of coffee. Eggs were good. Hash browns were a little dry or something – they were an interesting texture. Toast was regular white bread. Coffee was good diner coffee. My boyfriend had a sandwich with french fries. The fry I stole was nice and hot.
Service was good, quick, no lingering. Interior was home-y. Prices were good, reasonable.
Upon 1st glance, I noticed the specials which started the drooling. A fried bologna sandwich! Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it! It’s the quintessential after school treat of the 70’s latch key kids!
The pies are tasty but it was the carrot cake that stole my heart! Perfectly moist & yummy cream cheese icing!
The highway burger was my choice, it was a BIG & very tasty sandwich. Way too much food for me, but I had dinner for the next day! My hubby had the beef & noodles (skinny noodles for those who are noodles snobs). He enjoyed the generous helping with mashed taters. He said they were very good!
When were back in Alexandria, it will be a sure stop for these two Midwesterner’s!
