In search of lime and chili Chapulines, we found a new favorite restaurant in El Tejate! Delicious, house-made frescos and food; flavorful salsas; friendly and welcoming service; and nice atmosphere. Prices were really appropriate too for the quality of food and service. A MUST visit if looking for fresh Mexican food in North County San Diego!

Great place to get authentic Oaxaca food and delicacies; they even have agave worms on the menu (I didn’t order it) but if you’re craving some good Mexican food and you’re in the neighborhood, this is a great hole in the wall.

The tlayudas have very little cheese and the chips are overpriced!! It’s definitely more expensive than before and you get charged 15 dollars extra for coming in with another family. Not worth the drive, I live closer to two other restaurants with the same food options but better prices.

Visited again after 1 year from previous time, prices went sharply up, parrillada familiar went up about 15.00 dollars or 20%.
Still very flavourful in general but portions shrunk drastically.
Nice atmosphere, a little loud for me, 2pm on a Saturday.
Still a good place to enjoy authentic Oaxacan food even if more expensive.
Would recommend.

It’s definitely great to see and feel a little bit of Oaxaca here in Escondido. The restaurant reminds me a lot of visiting my parents’ homeland and the rancho of all things. Overall, the colors and the food options look fantastic on their menu. I’ve had a few things over the years from their options, tho was disappointed with my last visit. The meats seemed overcooked, and there was a hair found in the dish as well, which pretty much ruined my appetite that day. Services was a bit slow, but it was a breakfast dine in visit so I could understand why. The chips were a bit stale, tho the salsa provided was what saved it. Overall not the best visit I’ve had there, and I won’t attempt to try them again. But who knows, maybe your experience could go better.

Ok
I had previously posted a good review of this place as the food was really good and authentic. It still is. However, I come to find out just recently something that doesn’t make sense to me. They are now charging for chips and salsa. So if you order chips and then food, you get to use the same salsa they already sold you with the chips. But, if you don’t buy chips and salsa, you still get the same amount of salsa with your food. In other words they are just selling you the chips for $4. I just don’t get that, if you are struggling or need more money, why not add a few cents across the entire menu.

One of those places that is far away from home but so good that you are willing to go get some more once in a while. Everything was great and fresh. Service was excellent. We will be back !!

Food is home made and fresh. It is from Oaxaca , so is a little bit different from the usual Mexican food . It is more authentic. Chile relleno was one of the best i had. Tortillas are hand made . Tacos are big a super good. Just wish they have a mild salsa. But definitely worth to try it. Waitresses was nice and friendly, little slow service because it was only one waitresses for all the tables. Love this place we will come back!!❤️

Ordered the black mole plate. Wife ordered the red mole tamale. I licked my plate. Think we’ll get our tamales from here this year and skip the work. Yea, I drove 3 hours to get here and would do it again.
