We left as soon as we finally realized what the prices were. We had to ask to make sure, because the very pretty menu just has items with small black blocks after them that appear to just be menu item numbers (no $ signs).
At first, it really seemed that the prices weren’t listed, which was worrisome. I finally noticed that some of the numbers repeated and couldn’t be item numbers, and guessed they are actually the prices. But looking at the steak options, I was shocked and even more confused. They have burger meals for $12, which is affordable. But the numbers beside the steak meals were outrageous. $34? $36? I understand Fillet Mignon being pricer, but a New York Strip? An almost $40 Sirloin?
Comparatively, other sit down restaurants/steakhouses charge $18 or so for a sirloin meal. After verifying the prices with the waitress who was VERY friendly (but was at the moment dealing with unhappy customers at another table), we quickly left without ordering after excusing ourselves and explaining why. The waitress showed me the burger options when I told her the prices are too high for us, but I told her that we were after steak, but thank you anyway.
The prices are likely why there were so few customers in there when we arrived. From the outside, the place looks like another cute little diner in a shopping strip. So naturally, we expected prices to reflect this. However, even being a steakhouse, the prices are far too high. The place doesn’t have the look or feel of an expensive restaurant, so we had no idea. It is a very small space with no ambience, but it’s cute.
I can’t share my thoughts on the quality of the food, however, the people who were complaining at the other table had a list of serious complaints, especially about their steaks, and looked very unhappy. I had to interrupt for a moment to ask the waitress my question because she had not been back to our table since seating us. She and the customers seemed pretty flustered.
My overall thoughts are this: They need a new location that reflects their upscale pricing, more straightforward prices on their menu, and a new name. “The Dining Car” suggests a diner, not a steakhouse. We had to figure out on our own (with some trouble) that the place is not what it appears to be. Even if we can afford an expensive dinner at some point, we won’t be returning there.
**I’m amending my original review after today’s experience. I had lunch here with my mother today. We are choosing to still wear masks based on the current virus climate and the fact that I had a severe Covid case earlier this year and I’m still on oxygen. We were greeted very unpleasantly, treated to a loud anti-mask conversation between staff before we even ordered, then treated in a way that was completely opposite of our original visit. We were made to feel extremely unwelcome by our choice wear masks. When we did receive our food, portions were smaller than our last visit and the quality was noticeably lesser. We needed a box and had to go to the register to find one because of waitress never returned to our table. Today will be our last visit to this restaurant. I regret sending business their way after my initial visit.
Bathroom was flooded.
Table was dirty, silverware was too (had to ask for plastic after the second set was dirty)
Bake potatoes were grey! Severely overcooked.
Pinto beans appeared to be refried beans and had absolutely no taste.
Reordered a burger, had a good taste until mid way through I found the long black hair! Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!! I don’t have black hair!!!!
The waitress was very apologetic, the manager offered a dessert, needless to say we all had lost our appetite!!!
Came back months later. Over-medium egg fried all the way through and they have stopped honoring veteran and senior discounts.
