So for the food… catfish , gumbo- amazing, drinks- on point. We went for the experience because multiple friends who recently visited recommended it. They didn’t disappoint. I will say, I was least impressed with the chicken. I guess I was expecting more. It was still decent if you like your chicken fried hard. I would definitely return and recommend to others.
Our server, Kent, was incredibly sweet and kind, and made us feel well taken care of.
The fried chicken was outstanding—fried to perfection. The crust was light and airy with just the right amount of seasoning and crispiness, without being overly thick. Easily some of the best fried chicken I’ve had in a very long time.
The gumbo was clearly a seafood gumbo, loaded with flavor and plenty of crab. Absolutely delicious. The butter beans and rice were also well seasoned and tasty, and even the cornbread on the side was well made.
The chicken Caesar salad was a bit of a mixed experience. The fried chicken on top was excellent, but the salad itself had too much cheese, and the dressing got lost, making it taste a little dry.
The mac & cheese, however, was on point—we ended up ordering a second serving. The fresh lemonade was also refreshing and good. Everyone left stuffed and happy.
My only small complaint is the portion size of the fried chicken. The two pieces we received were a bit small for the price.
Overall, Willie Mae’s is definitely a must-stop when you’re in New Orleans. Just be sure to make reservations ahead of time so you don’t get stuck waiting.
Only reason I didnt give a perfect 5 across the board was because the damn server at the bar was drunk and stupid annoying… and they forgot our cornbread and had to ask the other bartender that had just gotten there if he could grab us some, and he seemed to acknowledge the request, but then kept working (stocking the bar for his turnover to come). Dude has a wicked attitude like he didnt want to be there, which isnt my problem. I really could care less as a customer what the beef was between the two bartenders, give me my food when I ask as a customer who is spending their money to eat at your establishment.
The bartender that looks like Nardwar was cool and super chill, but they dude that said he was from like south Carolina or north Carolina needs to go or be checked for being drunk while working. He looked super sloppy and was like spitting while he talked.
Side note, while we waited to be seated, they had a huge mardis gras parade going on right down the street and the restaurant had a live Dj playing music while we ate which was great.
Service was very good, so did the food. We like the Chicken wings better because they had more flavor than the fried chicken. Too bad we didn’t get a chance to taste the scotch chicken wings (Maybe it was a Sunday?). We will be back.
