This was unfortunately my first time eating at Rantei Sushi, and it was a really disappointing experience. We waited an hour just to be seated, and once we were finally at the table, the service felt very disorganized.

The salads arrived with greens that were extremely wilted and slimy, which was off-putting right from the start. We ordered the White Dragon Roll, but all I could taste were fried shallots and spicy mayo , there wasn’t much flavor at all. The Victoria Roll was slightly better, but still overall lacking and forgettable. The only item I actually enjoyed was the Agedashi tofu.

I don’t think I will ever dine here again.

Rantei is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants in San Jose. Sashimi was always fresh. Rantei roll was our favorite special roll. Yellowtail collar was high recommended. Chicken karrage served in good portion and temperature hot. It has fresh wasabi, but I am not really recommend it due to the value of its cost.

This restaurant don’t take reservations. The level of noise is generally good. Its staff were friendly but very busy.

Rantei is such a gem in Santa Clara! We came on a Friday evening so there was a little bit of a wait (no reservations for parties less than 6), but they are quick. We got a combination of sashimi, omakase special, and rolls. The sushi here is super fresh and you can really taste the quality in every bite.

The staff is really friendly and welcoming, and the whole place has that cozy, neighborhood feel where you can tell they take pride in what they do. It’s not flashy, just really good, authentic Japanese food done right.

Definitely one of my go-to spots now whenever I’m craving sushi. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something that feels a little more special than the usual sushi chains.

We came for a birthday and they had a nice surprise at the end.

Full house but no wait at 8pm on a Wednesday night. Delicious chirashi, rantei roll and tonkatsu curry. Also a cute mochi for a birthday surprise! The waiters were all very sweet.

Chirashi had decent cuts, sushi rice wasn’t overpowering. Rice was good quality but needed a tad more water. Fish portions were small. Dragon roll had a lot of avocado. Scallop skewer was a win while the beef skewer was dry.
Service was absolutely terrible. Even worse, their website doesn’t have pictures of their own food.

I guess I had too much expectations. First of all, I was most dissatisfied that I couldn’t make a reservation. The quality of the food was not bad, but it didn’t look very good to stack plates removed from the table on the side of a restaurant that sells uncooked sashimi. If I paid more attention to cleanliness, I think it could be a better restaurant. I ordered scallop sashimi, but I couldn’t order any more when I saw the serving person dusting the plates with his hands. That is very unfortunate. The fried shrimp was good.

Dinner was delicious!! We were here for a friend’s birthday and had a large tetami room. Several of us ordered the Kaisen Don and it was DELICIOUS!!! The presentation is unique and very nice, the quality was top, and we were so happy!! We all had a great time and I will definitely come back again when I’m visiting CA!

Truthfully, some of the best quality sushi and sashimi I had in the USA. However, I do have to take off points for the portion sizes of the omakase set. There are some amazing parts of the omakase set(specifically the otoro, salmon toro, and sweet shrimp), however, it is not worth the price in my opinion due to how small the portion sizes are for some of the dishes. I think if it is your first time at this restaurant, it is worth eating the chirashi, rolls, and sashimi. The sashimi especially was divine and is best paired with a side of rice. The food was high quality. The service could have been more attentive however. Atmosphere is only a three because while it is clean and traditional looking, it is very very cold in the restaurant. I guess it’s to maintain the temperature of the fish but it was freezing and uncomfortable. I have been to Japan and been to high class sushi restaurants and it was never freezing cold. In spite of that, I would still like to go back to try other things, as the quality of the food was great and almost as good as the ones I had in Japan.

Rantei is my favorite sushi restaurant in the entire Bay Area. Number one, everything tastes extremely fresh. The Chirashi Don Deluxe is my go-to sashimi. Better than the standard Chirashi and IMHO better than the more expensive Kaisen Don, though that one is also the bomb.

Baked sushi and grilled scallops? Other cooked sushi? Try ‘em! So good. I like the Lion King Roll. Garlic edamame will knock you for a loop. They have both the standard and fresh wasabi. Give the fresh a try… it’s not as spicy as the horseradishy stuff. They also have a nice crepe cake for dessert. Not quite Lady M standard but still delicious

Service is generally good. Sometimes they get backed up and the sushi chefs can only go so fast because the food presentation is always on point. They take care making their food.

They have sushi bar and tables. And I saw tatami mats but I don’t know how you get to sit there. Someday I’ll try sitting there.

Location is great with lots of parking around. You’re gonna wanna get there early unless you feel like waiting though; at least on the weekends. It’s a bit pricey but we don’t eat here every week. It’s a nice treat.

October 2025 update: the omikase sushi was fantastic. Green tea matcha cheese cake nice way to finish the meal.
