It was my first time visiting Russell with my friend. I ordered the Big Boi Breakfast with a large mocha. Fantastic brunch and great coffee — couldn’t fault anything. We were lucky enough to get seats by the window, which made it even better and gave me the chance to do a little watercolor painting of the food and the beautiful view.
The vibe is really nice and relaxed. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Russell and looking for a good place to eat. Lovely service as well.

Amazing food and bay views at reasonable prices. We had the butterfish, the salt n pepper calamari and delicious oysters. Staff was polite and charming.

waited 55 minutes for a flat white, FIFTY FIVE minutes. No they didnt forget the order, we asked the lady owner after we received our food she just told us “oh its busy and long queue so just have to wait”. wow. So after we finished our foods and at 50 minutes mark we went it and ask again for our coffee.
Total chaos behind the counter, all the dirty dishes piling up, running out of clean cups, drink dockets couldn’t see the end. finally bought our coffee out at 55 minutes and it was luke warm and tasted burn. i can see other customers are angry too asking for their drinks.
Food was average at best, good view tho, good amount of outdoor seating. Overall im surprised the restaurant couldn’t cope with the crowd, especially already in the middle of summer holidays on a weekday.

Popped in for a solo, light dinner after exploring around Russell.
Thoroughly enjoyed the NZ mussels and chilled glass of wine.

We visit family in Russell every Christmas and Butterfish is our favourite cafe for our caffeine fix. Drinks & food are excellent and reasonably priced, plus they have a coffee card if you’re going to visit a couple of times. Staff are friendly and helpful. We had brunch & lunch there, we were really impressed with the meals – very fresh, tasty and good servings. My partner loves Seafood Chowder and he was really impressed with the flavour and amount of seafood in it, probably the best he’s had. I had their Asian Prawn Salad, so fresh, lovely flavours and the prawns (6) were delicious, fresh & tasty. Egg dishes are good too and their Oreo Milkshake was a hit with my son. I had their Samosas (2), large & perfectly cooked, but they are quite spicy. Plenty of seating inside and outside, including on the beachfront – lovely views.
