Busy, bustling, and tucked away, Gantetsu-Ya features cosy and comforting ramen bowls in Brookline. The portions are big but the ramen was a bit too oily and the noodle texture was a little too soft for me. We also got the kaarage which was crispy but bland. Despite being told our table was ready, we still waited for 15 minutes.

Limited selections of authentic Japanese street food located inside the Arcade building.
Recently visited to try their okonomiyaki, but it seemed like their menus have changed. I ended up getting the traditional chicken karaage and gyoza, and both were very good. Karaage was extremely tender and they were certainly the best pieces I had in Boston.
Unfortunately, this place seemed to be overshadowed by the popularity of the ramen place right across, but they are definitely worth a visit.

I tried to book a table at this restaurant since a friend recommended it but was turned down the first time with no reservation option available but a waitlist. We went on the waitlist the second time only to find out we accidentally cancelled our spot so when we got there and told them what happened they turned us down the 2nd time! Well we thought since we live close by the third time would be a success. But I should’ve trusted the universe arrangement and not bothered. The food was bland and the ramen tasted like it was made out of a box. The horrible service made the food taste worse. They make you order and then wait another 20 minutes (even though it says no queue on their website) just to be served a mediocre ramen dish. Don’t believe the hype.

Very tasty and there are lots of veggies in okonomiyaki. Tokoyaki is made in a way that makes you feel very content.

This location is no longer open. It has been absorbed into Ganko Ittetsu Ramen, which does not serve tonkatsu. The website is outdated and misleading and should be taken down.

Excellent and unusual Japanese spot right in the heart of Coolidge Corner. Why this place is not constantly swamped is a mystery to me given that it is right across the hall from its sister restaurant which always has a line out the door. Food is savory and very well. I have eaten here several times in the last couple of months, and my only gripe is that wait times for an order once placed can be quite long, exceeding 20 minutes in most cases. That’ said I definitely recommend checking out this hidden jewel.

Gantetsu-Ya is a great new addition Ganko Ittetsu Ramen restaurant group. I went around 1:45 pm on a weekday and there was no line–score! If you want to dine in, they have about 3 tables. Similar to its sister ramen restaurant across the hall, it’s a cozy little nook that’s perfect for grabbing a quick bite.

I originally planned to get their signature takoyaki (delicious fried dough balls w/ octopus), but opted for the veggie okonomiyaki since my server said that would be more of a meal if I was really hungry (which I was.) They make a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki which I hadn’t tried before! The style I’m familiar with has more flour and is more pancake-like in its consistency. This one swaps in noodles for batter, which was an interesting new twist for me to try. The dish is PACKED with flavor! At about $15, the okonomiyaki does feel a bit expensive for lunch, but it was a very generous portion–enough for me to pack my leftovers for another day.

Regardless, I’ll definitely be back to visit soon, and I’m looking forward to trying the takoyaki next!

Delicious okonomiyaki. This is not a review of the ramen place across the way. Only a few dishes on the menu: Takoyaki (octopus dumplings), pork gyoza, and 5 types of Hamamatsu-style okonomiyaki. We had the original okonomiyaki and the Negi-Mayo style. Both were delicious. I’d go back there again, but I’ve been to Japan many times and enjoy this type of food. The wife was not so excited.

The best Takoyaki!
Update: Take out only now. Was not prepared for this. Last time ( during COVID) they let us sit and eat at their other restaurant 6 steps away. The relationship is no longer cooperative ( guessing) because even though there were tables available and we would of bought drinks they would would not let us sit there. Takoyaki is not a good take out food. Gets mushy and cold quickly.

Great vibe of the restaurant but overpriced food as a vegan.

Had the vegetarian broth with no egg to make it vegan, $16 + 4 for tip to make it $20 total. Would have expected better quality for the price but tasted just ok, nothing special to remember.
