I love chirashi combo, in other places I often get disappointed with sushi rice, but it was perfect here, and I want to try other items next time. Dessert menu is also very much Japanese style and I can’t find those in other restaurants.
Finding public parking can be a bit harder on weekends otherwise nice location in Steveston.
It’s one of must-try Japanese own places.
Everyone on staff was friendly but the service was just too slow. I generally do not leave reviews if it’s not positive but I hope this is constructive. Our table had a call bell and when you press it- you can even hear it ring! We tried about 5 different times but no one came unless we got up to call them.
We opted out of dessert from concerns of more delay
The rice was fantastic. Getting the right flavour and texture really makes or breaks a dish and the chefs knocked it out of the park. Even my simple kappa maki had depth and great flavour. Futomaki was huge and delicious (couldn’t help but eat one before snapping a photo). Unagi was grilled perfectly.
Staff were also great – servers were kind and attentive, while learning the ropes in a new restaurant. The manager was so warm and knowledgeable and recommended some great sake.
Great spot – support local!
The only issue was the waiting time. It took about 35-40 minutes after ordering for the food to arrive, which felt quite long. It seemed like the kitchen might be understaffed.
Because the food and service are both great, it’s a bit disappointing that the wait time is so long. Hopefully they can add more kitchen staff as the restaurant gets more established. For now, I wouldn’t particularly recommend going on a busy Saturday night.
We ordered the chirashi sushi and soba set, the grilled chicken set, and a kids’ set.
For the chirashi set, you can choose either udon or soba (hot udon, cold udon, hot soba, or cold soba). The chirashi sushi was different from supermarket sushi—it was topped with lots of fresh ingredients and tasted amazing. It was very filling too.
The grilled chicken was seasoned with shio-koji, making it juicy, tender, and delicious. The small side dish of beef was also very tasty and perfect as a snack with alcohol.
For the kids’ set, we chose natto. My child, who loves natto rolls, was absolutely thrilled. The set came with fried chicken, fries, a toy, and juice, and it cost under $10, which was a great deal.
For dessert, I tried the coffee jelly. The jelly itself wasn’t too sweet, and it paired perfectly with the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream on top. Since they don’t serve coffee as a drink, this dessert was perfect for a coffee lover like me.
At checkout, we were given a paper crane made from washi paper—it was so cute, and the kids were delighted. The restaurant had a great atmosphere, and the paper crane decorations on the wall were beautiful.
The owner was very friendly and easy to talk to as well.
I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Japanese flavors.
For dessert, I had the warabi mochi house-made by the owner. Among the many desserts available, it seems to be the most popular. The restaurant has an extensive menu, so I would definitely like to visit again in the near future.
It was very busy, probably because it was the weekend, so I’d recommend making a reservation.
I ordered the unagi set and my friend ordered a chirashi chazuke.
Service was extremely slow. Waited 50 mins for a table when we were 4th on the list. Not uncommon for second seating so we were fine waiting. The table we were seated at was the problem. It was a table for 2 in the middle of all possible restaurant traffic. I had to get out of my seat to move my chair and table for a family to get out because they had a stroller. Then the regular staff hitting my chair and rubbing against my jacket. All of this would be tolerable if we didn’t have to wait 1 hour for our food after ordering.
By the 45 min mark I saw a few tables open and asked if we could switch seats since they kept hitting my chair. The manager came back to apologize and gave me a 20% discount coupon, but could not move us because they have a line of customers at the door.
As a soft opening, it’s fine. Learn from complaints and adjust your restaurant based on feedback. That table cannot exist, it is in the middle of all foot traffic to all other tables. Please remove or change orientation for the sake of your customers.
Service was extremely slow, but the staff did regularly refill my tea. Tea was strong but very good. I had 3 full cups of tea before we finally got our food.
Unagi set is very good. Unagi is more dry, but fresh. When I say dry I dont mean it’s not good, but I mean the charcoal flavour is more prominent with the “dry” texture. Compared with Ed*kko, I’d prefer Ed*kko. But the one here is pretty good.
Chirashi chazuke is lacking in the dashi was very bland. Same with unagi set it is the same dashi. Should be more flavorful. The fish is fresh though and great quality.
Overall, if they can speed up service and make their seating more comfortable, I would recommend. I’d come back to try again when they’ve smoothed out their operations.
