We were given a separate menu as we had a voucher. The menu was really small no starters to choose they said we will get them all and just to choose the main. There were 3 to choose from. The food from the menu was really dissapointing. Deep fried chicken, few pieces of sushi a piece of salmon teriyaki sauce, plain rice and some really tough beef (£10 extra). We did not want to leave on a bad note so asked to try couple of dishes from the menu, which were actually great! Such a shame though, they are doing themselves a disservice by not offering from full menu when having the voucher. Also nowhere was it specified that there will be only a limited menu to choose from. I think if you want try it, go for normal booking .
We used a redletter day experience which is a set menu and a really nice way to experience Japanese food for the first time. ( See the celebration menu photo )
Would 100% return.
Both times were lovely – the restaurant is spotless, the staff are lovely, and a lovely, calm atmosphere.
The food is absolutely beautiful, but I could happily eat an entire vat of the Japanese pickled vegetables.
The drinks also looked lovely, both times we were unable to have anything alcoholic but the apricot sour and pear drink were divine.
Would absolutely recommend
The food came quickly & was delicious, we weren’t that hungry but demolished it all very quickly.
We did opt for pudding, mochi & the cheesecake, both very tasty & a good size to finish the meal.
I had a mocktail & it was tasty though a little strong, like squash that hadn’t been diluted enough.
I did get a little cold as the evening progressed, I think we were right in the movement of the air conditioning but I’d rather than than be too hot.
It’s not cheap but the quality is definitely worth the price.
Definitely recommend
Spicy Edamame was semi warm but tasty.
Miso soup was completely tasteless.
Prawn tempura, all four small prawns were soggy with heavy batter.
Sushi – they had run out of cucumber sushi so my daughter had vegetable sushi however she was adamant there was meat in it so left most of it. My son wolfed his tempura sushi down, so that was clearly ok.
Teriyaki Salmon was just plain salmon, no marinade. It was so overcooked you needed a couple of glasses of water to swallow it. Never have I ever been served salmon so overcooked. They put the teryiki marinade on the side!!!!!
At this point I realised there may have been a miscommunication with the kitchen so I flagged a waitress to ask why the food was not being cooked in the marinade. She said she would speak to the kitchen. The meal continued. Next:
Lamb chops were again just plain lamb, not even seasoned. Marinade was on the side. More than TWO THIRDS of each chop was FAT. The little meat was completely overcooked, no hint of pink in the centre.
Black cod arrived very white! It clearly also hadn’t been cooked in the marinade. Instead they had put the marinade on top at the end. We left the majority of it. My vegetarian daughter ( who eats fish and normally loves black cod) said it gave her fish ikk and now does not want to eat fish again.
Nobody questioned the amount of food left. We paid the bill and left. Disappointed and hungry. I realised complaining would not get me anywhere.
Please heed this review and don’t make the same mistake we did.
From the very beginning, the staff were unhelpful and inattentive. There was no warmth or effort to make the night feel even remotely welcoming or enjoyable.
The food itself was the main issue. The raw tuna we ordered was clearly not fresh and appeared to be out of date — please refer to the attached photo. It had an unpleasant smell and taste, and should never have been served. Additionally, the wagyu dish came out overcooked and tough, which completely defeated the point of ordering premium meat.
Most importantly, I became unwell shortly after the meal, and I spent the rest of the night sick. This completely ruined what was meant to be a special celebration.
For a restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide, this was shocking. I would strongly advise others to reconsider dining here until the quality, freshness of ingredients, and staff training are seriously addressed. I would not return.
The staff were equally impressive. So friendly, attentive, and genuinely lovely, they made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. Honestly, the existing reviews don’t do this place justice – it’s truly a gem.
My only criticism would be the price. Our bill for three people came to over £285 including the tip, which felt quite high, even for such excellent food. It’s definitely on the expensive side.
That said, the overall experience was amazing, and I’d still highly recommend Robun for a special night out.
The food here is absolutely delicious. I had the tasting menu. The fish was super fresh and just melted in my mouth. The black cod was perfectly cooked, flaking beautifully, and the miso soup was surprisingly one of my favorites—it was outstanding!
Naomi, our waitress, was excellent. She gave great recommendations and made sure everything was served with a great pacing.
I’ll definitely be coming back!
