The food was delicious. I had the barbeque chicken, fried chicken, and baked chicken, fried fish, cornbread, cabbage, mac and cheese, spaghetti and meat sauce. I am a cook myself, so when I say everything was seasoned perfectly, trust me, “everything was seasoned to perfection.” I also had the blueberry cake and white cake for dessert. The cakes were outstanding. I did get a chance to speak to the cook and owner. The young man who was cooking the food, the owner needs to keep him because he definitely knows what he’s doing. I recommend this establishment and guarantee you will enjoy every bite. I will be returning whenever I’m in the area. I look forward to it.

Family of 6 driving from Philly to Florida, we googled “food near me” because we only saw fast food and really didn’t want that, our search brought us to Viola James. From the second we walked in the door it felt like a warm hug. This isn’t a buffet like you would think, it’s 10-12 items made fresh to southern perfection. Right off 95, GO! 🙂

Food was amazing awesome. A must stop if you are traveling for some excellent Southern Soul Food. The place is very clean, down home, warm and cozy. Workers and owner very friendly and attentive. I missed the banana pudding on this round from PA so I’ll need to stop again. Chicken was so moist and tender it fell clean off the bone!!! Mac and cheese among the very best I have ever had and I am very well traveled with many different foods and of course our own. Collard greens seasoned to perfection and the sweet tea just right. It was NOT syrupy.
Definately a place we intend to visit again next trip South.
In reading the reviews, I am extremely disappointed in some. No place is perfect and if you find a problem be mature enough to address it so they can make it right. I met the owner and I am telling you they are the kind of people that mean well and serve from the heart. The place is named after the one’s parents…Viola the mother and James the father. I am reminded of the scripture….Exodus 20:12 KJVS

I’m so glad I happened upon this lovely restaurant today. Customer service is very important to me & theirs is amazing. Our waitress was a sweetheart and the owner was invested in our experience. We went in shortly after opening. The food was served nice and hot. I ordered fried fish, cabbage & yams. The fish was seasoned & fried to perfection. The yams were good, a little more heavily seasoned than I prefer but still good. I was not a fan of the cabbage. It had a very strong smoky flavor and was a little dry. When the owner came by the table and asked how the food was, I expressed my concerns about the cabbage. She offered me an alternate side & I chose mac & cheese. The mac tasted like it came from a a Big Mama’s kitchen…10/10! My sister ordered an extra side of mac to go home. I was surprised when the owner returned with another side of cabbage, more juicy & less smoky that the first. It was much better. My sister ordered fried chicken wings, mac & yams. The chicken was seasoned & fried well. I ate most of my sister’s chicken skin because she doesn’t eat it. She wasn’t a fan of the chicken legs because they were so huge. We both plan to return & try more items. They also have a small banquet style room to accommodate parties. I wish this new business the very best.

I’m Jackson, and the best way for me to describe “The Viola James restaurant food experience” is, Heavenly!!!
The moment you sit down with your plate and begin to try all of your favorite foods you’ve been wanting for, that’s when the blessings hit you.
For Me, it was love at first taste.
First the real Macaroni and cheese taste, and the cheese pull touched my soul. Then I sampled a little of the greens. The greens were lightly seasoned and tender but slightly firm, the greens whispered my entire name.
I couldn’t stop.
Next I tried the mashpotatoes, and I could almost hear my mother saying to me “there’s plenty more in the pot when you finish” !!!
This place took me to heaven with every sample and every bite. I’m a pescatarian, so I patiently waited for my fried whiting to come out. I literally watched the sever as she walked all the way from the kitchen to my table, and all I could do was CHEER in my head quietly “good GOD, the fish is here” !!!
The fried fish was all, and more then I could ask for.
Hot and fresh, moist, tender, and just so-so good.
I had the macaroni and cheese, I had the greens, I had the mash potatoes, I had the sweet delicious yams, the green beans and the cooked to perfection fried fish.
I’ve searched virginia for years to find a “REAL” homemade soul food restaurant, with no luck whatsoever.
But I’ve finally found one !!!
The Viola James restaurant sits on the very site that once was home to one of my biggest restaurant disappointments. It was a buffet and served most of it’s items from a can, with most of its choices being warm to the touch.
Thank GOD for Ms. Gloria and The Viola James restaurant, for all that they do. The customer service, the cleanliness and the food will captivate your heart and soul, one taste at a time.
After 3 overly satisfied visits, the almost 2 hour round trip visit to this restaurant is truly worth my time.
I kept bypassing the restaurant and not stopping, because I just thought it was the previous old buffet that was once located there, with just a new name.
Thank GOD it’s not.
Wonderful fresh food at a great price point.

My husband said the cornbread reminded him of his grandma and the greens. I really love the home cooked Southern meal like our ancestors. Of you are not a pork eating their greens are great. They bake their own desserts. All the comforts of home. I am picky eater due my dietary needs and this is my new favorite place.

Went in on yesterday with high hopes honestly. Got the buffet, nothing was seasoned..and the waitress seemed veryyy “off”. I informed the manager that the food wasn’t up to par but all she did was compared what I said to what the other customers thought, “im the only one that has said that” was her exact words, but according to the reviews, alot more people has said the same thing. The only reason i gave it 2 stars was because the DJ was playing nice music that kept the night going, other than that, the food could definitely use some adjustments..even tho no one else from my party mentioned it to the manager, they expressed their opinions amongst each other as well, im just the only one that spoke up. Do not recommend, because basically she calls her customers liars for voicing their opinions

Place Seemed Ok Went in The Owner was The only one there She was Very Nice. Food was Cold and Mushy $24. for the Buffet everything was Really Healthy Root Beer was Some Brand that was All Natural it was Flavorless tasted nothing like Root Beer. Owner didn’t Charge Us We apologized and She did also. Great if You get there when everything is Hot and Fresh If you are into Super Healthy Natural Food.
