We had an average experience dining here. I felt that the chef was impersonal and made/distributed each dish without any dialogue or description. He did not talk at all, other than quickly saying what the dish was as he placed it in front of you (ie. “bluefin tuna” -that’s it). The guests sitting beside us were asking us what the dish was because he was rushing on to serving the next person. They do provide a QR code that lists the dishes of the service. But relying on that should not be the experience. Their site says “The Sushi Chef thinks of details when he serves you, the customer. He thinks of the temperature of the sushi rice, the display, and the order of which type of Sushi to serve.” Seemed like everyone was being served the exact same thing. In fact he would sometimes pre-assemble 3-4 pieces and then distribute it to a line of guests. So he wasn’t looking at whether the guest enjoyed the dish, let alone customizing to your preferences. There are too many seats for one chef so I understand that he probably felt that he had to just get to the next person. But it honestly felt like we were in a waiting line. The food itself was decent and our server was kind. But like I said, quite an average experience even at its price point.

Had a wonderful experience at Sushi Bar Maumi. I was running late for my reservation due to traffic and felt bad, but the staff was very understanding since I called ahead to let them know. The quality of the fish was excellent, and even with just one chef serving 17 guests, the pace of the meal was surprisingly smooth. I also appreciated that they offered a menu for ordering additional nigiri—not just repeats of what was already served in the omakase, which is rare at similar spots.

Very good experience! The food was delicious, and I really appreciated how they took care of each customer. I also loved the chef’s passion and dedication to every dish—it truly shows in the flavors.

Came here for my wife’s birthday. We enjoyed the experience immensely. The ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant was very relaxing with soft instrumental music and knives elegantly displayed.

The moment you enter, you are welcomed by the smell of seafood which for someone who grew up around seafood is such a welcoming scent.

Once everything started, we started receiving the pieces one by one. Each one tasting fresh and delicious. The anago was our favourite but the tamago (no photo) was amazing as well.

For dessert, we got the matcha tiramisu which was excellent.

I highly recommend this if you want to have an authentic omakase experience in Vancouver. It’s definitely not a restaurant I will go to regularly but during special occasions it’s worth the price.

We had a fantastic experience at Sushi Bar Maumi.

The location is a bit obscure with its blacked-out windows and limited signage but once you’re inside, you’re immediately immersed in their unique atmosphere. I didn’t know it was Michelin recommended until I got there but I could understand why it got the prestige recognition.

The restaurant is limited to a maximum of 18 seats (and 1 sitting per night) and starts on time so make sure you’re there early – first come, first serve but all seats are at the bar where the chef makes the sushi right in front of you.

For our sitting, we got 13 pieces of nigiri, along with their signature miso soup; my favourite were the O-Toro and Uni’s. If you’re not full by the last piece, you can order additional pieces from their menu. There’s also an extensive alcohol list (mainly sakes) but we opted for the premium sake experience (which required to be selected at the time of reservation).

Overall, I highly recommend this omakaze experience. For the great price point, fantastic service, and delicious food, you won’t be left disappointed.

Nice, clean, and affordable omakase spot. Really loved the interior design of the place, it definitely enhances the experience and vibe. You can tell that the waitress and chef were both kind and hardworking. Each nigiri was incredibly fresh and heavenly (especially the blue fin tuna pieces) .One thing to mention would be that there is only one chef so the whole experience naturally takes some extra time (each nigiri comes out slowly). Personally didn’t really bother me because my fiancé and I were conversing and enjoying our time together.

Relatively cheap for Vancouver omakase at $135 (others go up to 200-300). It is slow since it’s one chef to 13 people but personally I find that preferable to 1 on 1 with a chef who watches you eat, and it is part of the reason why it’s cheaper.

We were full after the 13 set meal. The sake pairing is ok but all 3 sakes kinda tasted the same to me. The environment is calm and they have heated seats and a bidet in the bathroom.

Husband and wife duo run omakase. Edomae style sushi and specially curated selection of sake from Japan. I recommend arriving a little earlier and seating is first come first serve. Good value considering the quality of food you are getting.

This was one of the best omakase experiences I’ve had! We were lucky and had the Bafun uni and it was very creamy and fresh. The waitress was extremely attentive, and the sushi chef was very quick when putting the sushi together. The whole experience was a work of art, and definitely would come back the next time I’m in Vancouver!

Really great experience. Definitely not your average sushi spot. No booze, just tea. You first get 11 courses and then can choose some extra nigiri when you’re done. The Uni was amazing. The eel was also incredible. Any of the Tuna was delicious. Everything was more exotic and fresh from Japan. Great service. Very intimate setting. Not cheap but a really unique experience. Highly recommended. You will need reservations, 100%.
