A local institution w genuine values all done in a beloved yinzer quality way.
I like this place a lot. It’s like manchinis-like quality throughout – melt in your mouth, w white-bread-like quality, and a good value
I got the cheesteak. Was a huge portion with tons of fries. A great value. It’s not the most fine quality in the world but that’s not the point. It’s like the food of a nice Pgh corner bar that’s been around forever – and has been loved forever. It comes from a sense of respect and value. Look, It’s not John’s roast pork in Philly, but it does the job in a similarly deep way.
The crew inside was also good vibes. Some younger kids and they all seemed genuinely like they got along well, good camaraderie. They were thoughtfully helpful w me. That told me it’s a healthy culture in there, not some person who’s taking advantage of everyone in a big way. Those values came across of course w the prices too.
At the end, I have strong respect for places like this. It’s not surprising they are an enduring and longstanding institution for Squirrel Hill. Def Recommended.

Right before”Snowmageddon”, I ordered 2 subs and an order of fries from the squirrel hill uncle Sam’s by phone. I ordered and ultra sub with everything on it and then I ordered a regular cheese steak sub with just lettuce. When I got there to pick it up 1st red flag was that they had a random man in a flagger uniform behind the counter while they were preparing food (he did not work there). I took my food home and once bitten realized they mixed up the meats. The sandwich that should’ve just had the cheesesteak had the ultra meat and vice versa. I called the store and the owner was completely rude! He said I had to bring the sandwiches back even if I didn’t come back for a week or so I needed to hold onto them to receive a remake of the sandwich. Most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of in my life. I even offered to send a photo to prove my sandwiches were made incorrect and he would not accept them. I explained I do not live near this store. I used to go there as a kid and hoped it was the same but it definitely is not! The fries weren’t even crisp like they used to. They were soggy (and I ate those in the car as soon as I got them) very disappointed. Will never go back! I was craving some quick easy lunch, and this is the perfect place for that. I went on a Monday noon, and it was pretty filled with the lunch crowd. I guess a lot of people who work in an around come here to get lunch. There is plenty of seating inside, so even with a lot of crowd, it wasn’t very difficult for me to find a place to eat. I got the Philly cheese steak with mushroom. Pay Friend in the new wait for your order while they call your name. Everything is made fresh in front of your eyes on the griddle including the fresh fries. My food came literally five minutes. The fries were thin cut and very fresh and crispy. Sandwich was freshly made and nice and crispy. I have never had a Philly cheesesteak before so I’m not sure if the taste was authentic, but it was pretty tasty. I guess my only complain was the quantity of meat was very less, and it was mostly just bread, but then again I don’t know if that is the norm. They lot of different type of sauces and condiments that you can get for yourself. I really liked it, and for the amount it was great value for money. If you want an easy, cheap lunch, I would definitely recommend this place.

This was my favorite place to eat as an undergrad 15-20 years ago ❤️ Coming back for my reunion, I made sure to stop by here. A lot of places don’t live up to the hype in your head, but it’s as good as I remember, if not better! The fries are amazing and the subs are so good. Best place!

Disappointing. I got the Special Italian Sub. The description on the menu said “Loaded with extra cuts of Genoa salami capacolla, and provolone cheese”. This sandwich was not loaded with ANYTHING and with a small fountain soda came to $16.37

January 3rd 2026.Igot a cheesesteak extra cheese. Two orders of fries. The fries were soggy not even cooked long in the fryer. The steak and cheese had a little bit of meat. No cheese which I did pay for extra for My sandwich all together. was crappy hard bread at the ends. I was better off going somewhere else we’re going to Giant eagle. Buy some steakums will be better than this. Terrible. I haven’t been to this place in a while but but since I’m close by I figure that I can eat there a lot not for me not wasting my money.

Looked up and went here to reminisce the sandwiches from ~25 years ago as a student and heard from him they still taste as good as before!! It’s just today the Roma tomato sandwich was not available. Fast and friendly service. Good/flexible options for vegetarians, I loved the spinach/broccoli one, will add jalapeño or some spicy sauce next time. The breads are softer than the other sandwich places which worked out well for our picky eater.

They have fryers, so I’m not sure why they can’t be bothered to have chicken strips. I’m also not sure why a grilled cheese is not an option – all sandwich options are only for plant eaters. Those two additions would make it such a win.

Recently was in there and met the owner. He is extremely rude and very disrespectful. I walked in as soon as they opened and greeted everyone with a “Good Morning” every employee and even the own just looked at me , I said it again and was looked at as if I wasn’t a human being. As a business owner, how you treat your employees & Customers shows. Instead of me greeting everyone with a “Good morning” I should have been greeted by you or one of your staff members.
Food is always great but the atmosphere is trash! Do BETTER.
