I think people underestimate El Pollo Loco: the food is really much better than fast food and can definitely compete with table-service restaurants.
For your first time, if none of the bowls or burritos are calling out to you, just get the chicken with a few sauces on the side: that’s where El Pollo Loco started and it’s still great.
The service at this Oceanside location was also very friendly and efficient: a happy crew working together well (at least during the busy Sunday lunchtime we went).

I went to El Pollo Loco to buy lunch for my entire family and spent close to $60. Unfortunately, when I got home, I realized they completely forgot both burritos from the kids’ meals. I didn’t check the bag before leaving (which I probably should have), but by the time I noticed, I had already driven all the way home and had hungry kids with no food.
I had to drive all the way back, wasting time and gas, and went through the drive-through to let them know what was missing. Over the intercom, they didn’t seem to care at all. When I pulled up, they tried to tell me my total — I had to explain that I was there because my food was missing. They handed me the burritos without saying sorry, without any acknowledgment of the inconvenience, and without even attempting to make it right (no coupon, no free item, nothing).
Now I’m stuck eating cold food because I had to go back just to get my kids’ meals. The lack of basic customer service was extremely frustrating. Mistakes happen, but not even offering an apology made this one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve had. It truly felt like “here you go, bye,” and that was it.

The chicken is truly great. The salsa bar is also wonderful. It’s has the things that all the El Pollo Loco’s do. There is lots of parking. Wheelchair accessible parking and entrance. Restroom for customers. Like all fast food restaurants, set your expectations accordingly. Places round to eat for friends if they want something different. This one has a drive through and it is convenient to get to from the Freeway. A great stop in you need to be quick.

They’ve definitely upgraded. This new team is really fast. They’re also very good at customer service. The food is hot and I recommend this location. Also, it seems like the manager and the team are all working together really well.

I’ve been getting the Double chicken avocado salad for a couple years now but tonight was the last time I will be going there.
My friend picked it up for me and she asked the guy what cotija was and he could not answer the question. Then there was barely any lettuce, cotija, pico and only 2 small slices of avocado. The worst thing is that it had seeds of some kind it which is not listed on the description of the salad and I am a person that has many food allergies. The description also states that that there is “organic super greens with lettuce” and there were only 2 tiny pieces of “super greens.”
This place lacks the training that is needed by all employees, they must be able to answer questions, give them a cheat sheet to look at.
Every time I go there something is usually missing from my order also, this time it was the other 1/2 of my salad which I did not appreciate. Get it together El Pollo Loco!
